Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

As a cyclist I have always been really, really careful when passing horses... this thread is making me think thats probably not required.

Mytwopeneth · 13/12/2021 22:48

Oh, and I like horses but only when they're in a field.
Or on my plate.
It's the weird stuck up riders that are the problem.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 13/12/2021 22:48

Horse manure produces far less methane than cows.

It's not an issue.

Nopetryagain · 13/12/2021 22:48

OP on the one hand I envy you to lead such a blessed life that it is horse poo which causes such outrage; on the other I am sympathetic that you are not able to see the impracticality of horse riders safely keeping a horse still whilst simultaneously shovelling shit into a bag on a road.

2nd page, BakedTattie: Hopefully a few cyclists have skidded on it.
5th page, TheOccupier in response to BakedTattie: Hope your horse gets spooked by the next cyclist you see and throws you off.

I agree, some of the comments on this thread are disgusting. Including all the comments about how the peasants should rush out to clean up my animals shit and be greatful. God forbid a horse owner should dirty themselves with such a task.

DingADingADingDong · 13/12/2021 22:49

It is very much appreciated @PoshPyjamas , thank you

Why am I talking about horse shit on Mumsnet?

Someone, please send help.

sst1234 · 13/12/2021 22:49

To be honest, roads are for cars, not horses.

Tobchette · 13/12/2021 22:49

I checked mumsnet this morning and read a thread about bum cleaning and how wipes dont cut it and decided it wasn't a mumsnet day for me.
Came on just to catch up on a juicy thread before going to bed and stumbled across this instead.
The neighbors cat shit sagas, husband's long toilet visits, and now this... So poop obsessed on here. I think I might have seen more poo threads this week than I have actually pooed myself.

Mytwopeneth · 13/12/2021 22:50

@GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou
It's the gas that comes from their arses that I'm on about.

Unless you want to be kicked, it’s probably wise to continue to give horses a very wide berth!

Anyone suggesting riders should pick up their horse’s poo has obviously never been riding. Bags might possibly be a thing anywhere it’s a significant problem, but riding with a shovel, dismounting to clear up the poo, then having to remount, still carrying your shovel, would certainly cause more accidents than leaving it where it is.

Toomanyradishes · 13/12/2021 22:50

Humans litter, create hugh piles of landfill, create cars which belch out toxic fumes, release our sewage into the watee system, concrete over land, hack down ancient woodland and forests and generally destroy the planet, but sure some horse shit is an issue.... Hmm

DdraigGoch · 13/12/2021 22:51

@PinkPrettyPearls

Horse riders could cary a snow shovel and bin bag, like dog walkers do a scoop and bags.

What’s the difference ?

It will happen, eventually.

No one picked up dog poop years ago.

Plenty still don't
Lockheart · 13/12/2021 22:54

@sst1234

To be honest, roads are for cars, not horses.
Roads were literally invented for pedestrians and horses, who have a right to use the roads. Cars are there by licence only - you need to get permission to take a car out on a road.

The answer is still the same.

Horses farts really aren't a problem.

Mythologies · 13/12/2021 22:55

picking up poo

maddy68 · 13/12/2021 22:55

How? It would be highly dangerous to get off a horse on a road , or carry equipment to pick it up. It's only grass anyway and easily disperses

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 13/12/2021 22:55

Horse farts*

Heshcher · 13/12/2021 22:56

AnyOldPrion is it legal to take aggressive or untrained horses out on roads? Surely if you know your horse likes to kick other road users you should keep it off of the road and away from other people. What happens if one of these untrained kicking horses meets one of the mumsnet-famous running around dogs? Do you just let your untrained animals attack each other? None of this feels like responsible pet keeping.

Kendodd · 13/12/2021 22:56

What's wrong with riders carrying a shovel and bin bag? They don't seem to have much trouble carrying a whip to beat their animal with.

kickupafuss · 13/12/2021 22:57

I don’t think anyone is suggesting horse riders carry a shovel and clear up the poo as they ride. Almost all the horses going along the roads near me come from the local livery. Those owners of that livery should come out with their shovels and clear up every few days. Is that too much to ask? Surely you can’t expect other people to do it for you? My roses would be buried by now if I had to go out 4or 5 times a day with my shovel.

Whenever I pass horses on my bike (usually the same people) I always give them a very wide berth (as in moving into the other lane). The riders actually seem more confident than me of their horses' potential reaction to a bicycle. They always thank me though.
Kendodd · 13/12/2021 23:03

Here you go. You don't even have to stop to pick it up, just get one of these. And as for the inevitable, 'my horse would never wear that' how did you manage to get a saddle and ride on them? Was it that the young horse couldn't wait to get a ten stone weight on it's back? Or is it that riding it was all about you so you didn't care how much difficulty that was where as picking up shit is for the benefit of other people so of course you wouldn't trouble yourself with that.
