Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

What happens if one of these untrained kicking horses meets one of the mumsnet-famous running around dogs?

Horses don't run up to dogs and attack them, though. Dogs do sometimes run up to horses and attack them, and if the "untrained kicking horse" then has a go at the dog it's self-defence. Dog owners, please keep your dogs on a lead if you can't train them to recall. HTH.

AnyOldPrion is it legal to take aggressive or untrained horses out on roads? Surely if you know your horse likes to kick other road users you should keep it off of the road and away from other people. What happens if one of these untrained kicking horses meets one of the mumsnet-famous running around dogs? Do you just let your untrained animals attack each other? None of this feels like responsible pet keeping.
Even the most highly trained horses in the Royal Mews have bolted on occasion. Horses are prey animals, it's in their nature to get defensive. That's why you don't come too close to them from behind on a bicycle because you don't want to surprise them. Just like you wouldn't go looking for potholes to fall in to.
GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 13/12/2021 23:07

A horse diaper...

Horse riders should pick up their poo!!
ichundich · 13/12/2021 23:07

Because horse poo is nowhere near as disgusting as dog shit; horses are plant eaters.

TrashyPanda · 13/12/2021 23:07

@sst1234

To be honest, roads are for cars, not horses.
Don’t be silly.

Roads were around for millennia before cars were invented.

And horse manure is a wonderful, organic fertiliser.

@Kendodd

2nd page, BakedTattie: Hopefully a few cyclists have skidded on it. 5th page, TheOccupier in response to BakedTattie: Hope your horse gets spooked by the next cyclist you see and throws you off.

I agree, some of the comments on this thread are disgusting. Including all the comments about how the peasants should rush out to clean up my animals shit and be greatful. God forbid a horse owner should dirty themselves with such a task.

You need to lose the chip on your shoulder.

Why are you harping on about "peasants"? Surely peasants would be growing vegetables, not roses.

Anomelettefortheroad · 13/12/2021 23:08

Has anyone got any statistics for accidents caused by horse shit on the road?

Ariela · 13/12/2021 23:09

It disappears when it rains

Helpstopthepain · 13/12/2021 23:10

@JudgeJ

Pick it up and use it for your roses When we were kids in the 50s there was a rag'n'bone man who came round collecting with his horse and cart, I vividly recall my father going out with a bucket and shovel to collect the droppings before his neighbour could get out there, it produced povely roses.
We have young farmers that do a charity dung run every year.
TooManyAnimals94 · 13/12/2021 23:10

Few points to pick up on...pretty sure I'm wasting my time but here goes.
Smug little smile? That's a 'thank you for slowing down' so we're damned if we do and damned if we don't apparently!
To the person complaining she didn't want her kids cycling through it on a footpath- someone is in the wrong there. Either it is a bridleway and some horse poo is to be expected or it is a footpath and your kids shouldn't be cycling on it anyway.
The class comments bore me. The vast majority of horse owners are hardworking people who devote their time, energy and money into animals who literally shit said money all over the road. Question our sanity if you must but understand it is nothing to do with class.
I'm not even going to respond to the OPs 'evidence ' ...laughable.

tadpole73 · 13/12/2021 23:10

Oh get a grip and stop being so woke

TheNestedIf · 13/12/2021 23:10

I've voted YANBU, although I think that, whilst it's not as disgusting as dog poo, there's a time and a place for cleaning horse poo up and leaving it.

I regularly used to cycle over Blackfriars Bridge. When they created the cycle super highway (ha), guess where the police used to ride their horses. Having to make a sudden decision over whether to swerve or skid/spatter horse poo up one's back, whilst amongst a pack of other riders all weighing up the same decision, was terrifying.

To be honest, roads are for cars, not horses.
Many roads were built for horses, not cars. I tell you what, we'll compromise. Any road established after the Roads Act 1920 can be prohibited to horses. Just as long as we likewise ban cars from roads built before 1920. Sounds fair to me.
PyongyangKipperbang · 13/12/2021 23:11
@PyongyangKipperbang are you from a rural area or did you move there to enjoy the countryside and complain about every aspect that doesn't sit well with you and your car
Sorry to disappoint but I was born here. Its the ones who have moved in who are the problem, or rather....make their animals shit someone elses problem.

Bingbangbongbash · 13/12/2021 23:12
www.weeklygripe.co.uk/horse-manure-on-the-road-is-dangerous
What on earth is this nonsense?! It’s some idiot’s blog, not actual news.

And frankly if a rider can reach a car with their whip, which is typically about 40cm long, the car was passing far too close.

TooManyAnimals94 · 13/12/2021 23:13

Also, the roads perhaps are meant for cars but if the government continues with its lunatic plan to have everyone in electric vehicles by 2030, maybe lots of people will revert back to horsepower!
I'm a poor peasant who can't afford an electric car but I have an all terrain vehicle that can run on hay and grass!

whymewhyme · 13/12/2021 23:14

Can you imagine.....getting off a horse, getting out a bin bag and picking it up lol then jumping back on and carrying on the ride with a scary black flappy bag
...hahaha that wouldn't be dangerous at all!!! Seriously you so lucky to have that as your only problem lol

hufflepuffnstuff · 13/12/2021 23:16

Obviously it will never happen, but it is interesting and amusing to see how people excuse the poo of their preferred animals. Cats have the right to roam or however it is phrased. Horse poo is just digested grass and therefore could never be considered disgusting by right-minded people--. Dog shit, on the other hand, is the work of the Devil himself. Grin

Horse manure may not cause accidents and may be merely digested grass, but it's still disgusting. Your horse's manure is just as disgusting, imo, as my dog's poo. They're both nasty!

Nothing was said about aggressive horses. You made that up.

Horses, like many other animals, can get frightened. That is what was referred to. It’s just basic common sense that you don’t startle an animal that is a lot bigger and stronger than you are.

What do you mean by taking “an untrained horse” on the road? Exactly how is a human going to make an untrained animal the size of a horse go down a road with them on their back? That ain’t going to happen

It takes a long time to break a horse to the saddle and then to train them to respond to aids. Trying to ride your untrained horse on a road is a recipe for disaster as well as stupidity of the highest order and no rider would ever attempt it.

Replace horses with robot horses. Problem solved. You're welcome.

Reclines in comfy chair and gives out a smug sigh

ffscovid · 13/12/2021 23:19

I live rurally. I don't particularly care for horses (I'm possibly the only person in our village who doesn't ride!) but YABVU.
Horse manure is basically grass / hay. It doesn't really contain pathogens like dog / cat / bird poo does and neither is it slippery like mud is if you happen to step on it / drive on it.
Every road / lane round here is covered in the stuff. Doesn't bother me one bit. You can't exactly expect the rider to dismount when the horse has a bowel movement and clear it up. What would they do with it? Bucket? Bin bag? How would they carry a shovel?

Sherryandbright · 13/12/2021 23:20

Dog faeces can cause blindness. Toxoplasmosis. Which is why their owners have to pick it up. Dogs eat meat. Horses do not.

I am rather fed up of this thread reoccurring which is why I've replied to it

Err why?

I ve read through the thread and no one said @BakedTattie was wrong to wish cyclists have an accident caused by her horse, so why should ior anyone else be bothered if my dog/car or 'cycle spooks your horse?

Respect works both ways i'm afraid.
