Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

Actually I am with the OP.

I live in a rural area and am sick of having to either dodge the horse shit or clean it off my car. Is horse shit somehow more acceptable than dog shit because only the monied can afford horses?

If you own any animal that shits in public then you are morally (and should be legally) required to clean up after it. I only exclude cats from this because those little bastards will simply find somewhere else (no. I dont own cats)

ODFOgrinch · 13/12/2021 22:24

Loving your work OP. I knew of Somerset Live but had never seen Daily Gripe before. I do love a parody news site 😀.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/12/2021 22:24

There is a bridlepath between our house and next door. We try to share it fairly.

AnnieSnap · 13/12/2021 22:25

This is a joke right? Clearly you have never ridden a horse! Also, herbivore poo is not hazardous in the way carnivore poo is.

Pbbananabagel · 13/12/2021 22:25

To be fair, I don’t see how they logistically could, however…
There’s a riding stables local to us that uses the footpaths to bring the horses round my street regularly and it IS awful to try to get a pram up the footpaths without getting covered in horse shit. Even worse when it’s a double pram. Fair enough when they’re actually riding on the road but it’s a different story when it’s actually a space meant for people on foot, kids on bikes etc.

Bazinga007 · 13/12/2021 22:27

I agree it disgusting, it's all over the place where I am. Thankfully the stables close by is being shut down and we won't have to put up with this for much longer. The horses will be thankful as they won't have to cart the big boned stuck up riders anymore.

mogsrus · 13/12/2021 22:28

You don’t keep horses then!

maconandmacorons · 13/12/2021 22:29

@PyongyangKipperbang are you from a rural area or did you move there to enjoy the countryside and complain about every aspect that doesn't sit well with you and your car

Heshcher · 13/12/2021 22:29

Could someone explain why the horse rider wishing cyclists would skid in horse poo is acceptable or at least not worthy of mentioning, while the cyclist wishing the horse would spook is criticised? Is this one of those famous British social class things? As an outsider they both sounds really unkind things to wish for, but only one of them was picked up and citicised in this thread.

NeedsCharging · 13/12/2021 22:30

Is horse shit somehow more acceptable than dog shit because only the monied can afford horses?

Erm no. Its because horse shit is grass/hay biodegradable and not toxic to humans and dog shit is meat based stinks can take years to breakdown/become safe and is toxic to humans.

@Annotherchange

Oh for goodness sake, this is what you are worried about?! Pick it up and use it for your roses.

@torquewench

Am I imagining it or is this a recurring thread?
Easy way to start a bun fight.
Heshcher · 13/12/2021 22:37

I somehow lost my quotes from my previous message. Here they are:

2nd page, BakedTattie: Hopefully a few cyclists have skidded on it.

5th page, TheOccupier in response to BakedTattie: Hope your horse gets spooked by the next cyclist you see and throws you off.

Tumble weed after BakedTattie's comment and outrage after TheOccupiers comment. Is that because riders are upper class and cyclists are working class so wishing harm to cyclists is funny whilest wishing harm to riders is not? I need an idiot's guide to social class in Britain because they both sound awful to me.

evangeline12 · 13/12/2021 22:37

i agree OP. logistics etc aside it is disgusting

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 13/12/2021 22:39

Carry a snow shovel? :o

I have a wonderful image of riders trotting along with them sheathed on their backs like a battle axe.
www.weeklygripe.co.uk/horse-manure-on-the-road-is-dangerous
Got any more? I've almost filled my bingo card. "Road tax", "stuck-up"...

TonkinLenkicks · 13/12/2021 22:39

Not quite with you on the accidents claim.

But I hate horses. I hate them on the road and I hate their steaming bogging shit on the road. I hate the riders smug little smile when you drive past as well. I love next to a livery, this is not working out well for me Grin

MyBeloved · 13/12/2021 22:40

So, I'm supposed to ride my horse carrying poo clearing equipment, dismount my horse on the road, keep control over it while I shovel its completely harmless and actually beneficial manure into a bag (all with one hand whilst trying to keep said horse from freaking out and causing an accident), then mount whilst hiding the full bag of manure and (presumably) a pitch fork?!

Yeah....RIGHT!!!

JudgeJ · 13/12/2021 22:42

Pick it up and use it for your roses
When we were kids in the 50s there was a rag'n'bone man who came round collecting with his horse and cart, I vividly recall my father going out with a bucket and shovel to collect the droppings before his neighbour could get out there, it produced povely roses.

Mytwopeneth · 13/12/2021 22:42

It's not just the roads, where I live horse riders have started using the cycle paths and leaving them covered in crap.
I have started having to use the roads which kind of defeats the object.
Also, what about the amount of methane they produce? We are being told to cut down on meat for this reason.

MyBeloved · 13/12/2021 22:42

*holding

Not hiding

GettingItOutThere · 13/12/2021 22:43

are you a townie and moved to the countryside?

makes sense if so.

do not be so rediculous!

DingADingADingDong · 13/12/2021 22:44

Road tax
Stuck up
And now ‘Smug’
Such fun! 🤣

PoshPyjamas · 13/12/2021 22:44

As a cyclist I have always been really, really careful when passing horses... this thread is making me think thats probably not required.
