Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

Instagram · 13/12/2021 21:14

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

Forget the probably inaccurate claims.

I agree with the sentiment that one owner of an animal leaving a pile of smell and germs in public property should pick it up like any other.

Horses can carry a person and not a saddleback and mini spade?

Yes, you do know if your horse is having a poo…

So many entitled people on here. .people should pick it up so if someone let's a horse poop outside my gate I should pick it up 🤔yet it is not my horse.. dosen't matter if its not harmful why should I have to look at pile of horse poop outside my gate spread all over the road ..for the people that own a horse I won't pick it up well If that's the case someone should lift it fallow you home throw it over the top your head like you said it isn't harmful🤷🏻‍♀️. .at the end of the day it's about being decent and having abit courtesy for others ..I have been cleaning up messes belong to everyone else my whole life yet no one cleans up after me if I make mess I clean it up. .horses ain't for transport anymore so the rules should change .. dosen't matter if its not harmful you shouldn't be allowed to leave a pile messy horse poop outside someone else house it's that simple ..I went out today a pile horse poop lying out side my house lying spread over the road yet the people that ride the horses live around the corner they could came back and cleaned it up which they have not..if I'm cutting the grass or the part outside my fence I go out with brush and brush it all up from the road so if I can do that people with horses can pick up the poop .so regardless people should be made to clean it up not my problem you have horse it ain't my horse not my mess so why should anyone clean up after these lazy horse riders ..if people have to clean up dog poop, litter butts and muck and even cow poop why shouldn't horse riders .Also having a horse is a choice and what reason are they needed just so riders can make money from them ..driving car people need them to get to school runs work and appointments etc what do you need horse for surely ain't for transport anymore so that agreement on here is horse crap 😂plus roads have changed now for cars not for horses the only reason you have horse in the road is for exercise so you should be made to clean up after yourselves specially if it's left outside someone gate or property as why should I or anyone else have to pick it up or just walk around it ..it's disgusting and dirty looking and have that mess outside your property. The way I see it drivers ain't allowed to throw rubbish fage butts out the car window they are fined I don't agree with anyone doing that or even people that don't pick up after dogs or even farmers leaving a pile muck roads everyone should clean up after themselves and that's including horse riders 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh for goodness sake, this is what you are worried about?! Pick it up and use it for your roses.

Yes I do always think this when I see a lovely bit of horse poo.

Orangepawprints · 23/05/2024 22:10

I know it's a zombie thread, but one of the reasons for the huge drop in the number of sparrows is the lack of horse poo compared to 100years ago.
The horse's digestive system is pretty poor (which is why you should never use horse manure on your garden. Even well rotted..I know they used to, that's was because there was tons to be had from stables or even the road)

sparrows used to be able to root through the poo and find undigested seeds, grain, oats...an easy food source. So picking it up doesn't help sparrows or the insects etc who use it as food.

CostelloJones · 23/05/2024 22:54

Oh jeez where has this one been resurrected from 😂

Instagram · 24/05/2024 12:44

To look at it in another perspective, context is key, a countryside location barely used as a route. Compared to a frequently used route such as a public road where children cross over and pushchairs, bikes, wheelchairs and those with disabilities such as the visually impaired.
In these modern times horses are in the majority of cases a hobby so they should accommodate any potential inconvenience that could impair another’s right to an accessible access of travel.
Walking is a healthy and essential part of life not a hobby.

Have you ever heard of paragraphs?

fliptopbin · 24/05/2024 12:59

Who's resurrected the zombie thread?

Heyhello · 28/05/2024 12:33

Jog on you fool.

Heyhello · 28/05/2024 12:37

Not my problem clean up after yourselves 🤷🏻‍♀️so much for it going away after a day it's still lying on the road 6 days and the rain didn't wash it away the people that are defending this behaviour are talking crap that it washes away after a day no it does not ..next time it happens I'll land up to them and throw it into the cunts yard.

sunglassesonthetable · 28/05/2024 13:14

It's on the road isn't it? outside your gate?

Kendodd · 28/05/2024 13:25

Of course horse riders shouldn't clean up horse poo. Horse riders are posh people don't you know, they can let their animals shit wherever they want. So what if some working class child steps in it, or a poor disabled person on mobility scooter rides through it or gets splattered. Let's them know their place in the world.

LostFuse · 28/05/2024 13:53

Unlike with dogs, there is no legal requirement for horse owners to clean up their animals' mess; however section 161 of the Highways Act 1980, makes it an offence to deposit anything whatsoever on a highway which may injure or endanger other road users.

Sherryandbright · 28/05/2024 13:58

I ride and I am far from posh! A lot of others aren't either.

It's just not as dangerous as dog poo (vegetable matter) not to mention not as smelly or awful generally.

🤣 You're getting a lot of grief for this, inevitably, but I've sometimes thought about this too. There's a narrow ginnel near my house, which goes past the primary school, and horses go down there. There's often a massive pile of poo. I'm sure it's a challenge to stop the children walking through it

This thread is four years old nearly - why on earth are you bumping it again?! 🙄

In theory a claim could be made, under duty of care.
Maybe that’s the way forward, the more claims put forward the better.
Looking at some case studies there could be hope to set a precedent to make an update to an outdated law.

Horse poo on the road - Bikelawyer

When travelling through a nearby village I came to a sharp bend and there was horse manure in lumps and spread over the road where the cars had driven
