Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

I wish all cyclists attended those "school cycling proficiency lessons". Maybe it would stop them from ignoring traffic lights!

My daughter is a rider and it's absolutely ridiculous to suggest kids are being allowed to ride on roads on crazy horses with no training. Nothing could be further from the truth

Vieve1325 · 14/12/2021 14:52

How do you suggest we store the necessary tools whilst they ride?

How do you suggest we get off and back on our sometimes huge horses in random places (we also don't make a practice of getting on from ground as a practice as it's damaging to the horse)

Would you be happy to help hold horses whilst owners fumble with plastic bag and shovel in the wind? 10 points if you don't get knocked off your arse by a freaked out equine.

Equine manure is completely harmless. Its more or less dissolves and vanishes in the first rain, or dries hard and crumbles to what is basically dried, digested grass. I live with enough of it under my fingernails daily, have done for over 30 years, and have not died yet.

In fact, after two years of Covid hygiene, a bit exposure to it in the air might even help a toughen up some immune systems

Dogs are smaller so potentially less dangerous and can be put on a lead.

Nope. On average in the UK 4000 people are attacked by dogs 70% attacked are children.
I am unable to find similar stats for horse attacks so this would show that dogs are much more dangerous to humans than horses.

Cyclists can control their bike, it is not unpredictable in its temperament like a horse can be. Schools teach cycling proficiency to children so they can follow road safety.

Apparently they cannot control their bikes given the comments on here how they slide on mud/horse shit so frequently.
Again road safety assessments are not mandatory so anyone can just ride a bike on the road and they do.

At least with horse riders we learn for many years as do our horses in order to be safe on public pathways. I have never once lost control in 20 years of riding public highways. I have had countless incidents of idiot drivers/Cyclists not following the highway code and driving like dicks.

Police horses are different entirely, it is used for the safety and protection not a hobby!

No they are not they are just horses like mine. Mine is what is called bomb proof. Unlike the police horses last year who refused to cross a rainbow crossing Grin

Police horses are used for all manner of things which is not always protection.

Thing is you hate horses and their riders. You will use any shit comparison you can in order to be goady.
Well it's worked the majority think you are a goady idiot.

SavageTomato · 14/12/2021 15:04

Oh, so police horse manure is different somehow? Or are police special because of their badge? Jesus wept, this is the most stupid thing I've read in a long time. As for hobby, you'll find, if you take the time for an even cursory think about horses and why people keep them, that they are rarely a hobby and even if they are, so what? Shit is shit is shit, and it's the least offensive shit I've ever come across. Get a grip.

Find us a headline about a child being savaged by a horse

I'm old. When I was a kid and there were still a few horse and cart deliveries - yes, really - keen gardeners would clear up any horse droppings in minutes. Very good for roses apparently.

SilverBelle · 14/12/2021 16:39

To be fair, you don't need a shovel and bucket. Just pick up the horse buns with your hands and toss them on the grass verge.

Or throw them at close-passing cars.
SilverBelle · 14/12/2021 17:03

My grandfather, a keen gardener, always had a carrot ready for the milkman's horse so he would make a "deposit" on the front lawn.

Absolutely. I’ve eaten a few sarnies with a bit on it, never come to any harm yet
whojamaflip · 14/12/2021 17:18

We have a special road brush that goes on the front of the tractor and yes we do clear excess mud of the roads - it's a hazard of winter work and we can be prosecuted if somebody has an accident due to mud on the road. Beats the old days when we used to have to do with a shovel!

grooveonthemove · 14/12/2021 17:19

I remember an OP posting something similar about three years ago. It went something like 'I wouldn't mind but it wasn't just a bit of shit, a whole arse of shit!' Xmas Grin

@borntobequiet

I think you meant their horses’ poo.
😂😂😂
VeryLongBeeeeep · 14/12/2021 17:29

To address the 'horse nappy' question: these are predominantly used for driving horses, especially in tourist cities that have horse drawn carriage rides as a local attraction so multiple horses passing along the same route all day every day. One end of the nappy / poop chute fastens to the carriage, or to the driving harness which fits very differently to riding tack (there are more straps at the back end on driving harness because that's how horse and carriage are kept together; the same straps wouldn't work on a saddle either because there's nothing behind to provide the necessary tension, or it would adversely affect the fit of the saddle and risk causing the horse discomfort and/or unbalancing the rider). Obviously riders don't have a carriage to attach anything to so while not impossible, it's a lot harder to fit a horse nappy to a ridden horse without either the straps interfering with the how the saddle fits or the bag hanging in such a way that it catches the horse's hocks - the pointy bit of the back of their legs - as it moves, especially once full. Consider that horses are prey animals with the instinct to a) bolt and if prevented from bolting to b) kick if something unexpectedly hits their hind legs the way a predator might try to do to bring it down, and you might start to see why this isn't a very practical or safe idea when weighed against the low risk to health or safety of horse shit being left where it is.

Just because something is temporarily unpleasant to encounter doesn't mean it's unsafe. Despite the OP's rather wild claims, there are very few accidents caused by horse poo in the road (and incidentally I don't condone people wishing harm to cyclists, who are probably the biggest at-risk group of skidding on fresh/wet poo).

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 18:01

@Instagram

We have police horses near me, as it’s their training ground or something. Have never, ever seen them pick up the poo. I saw one poo today ffs which is what made me think to make the comment.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 18:02

But how would you know if you see a poo on the road if it’s my horse or a police horse?!

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 18:12

Blue and flashing?

trickytrudy · 14/12/2021 18:14

My dog eats the horse poo. HTH.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 18:20

@NeedsCharging

😆 can it arrest criminals too?

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 18:23

Maybe.
Apparently Police horses are not like any other horse they are special and here to protect us all so maybe their poo can arrest criminals...or at the very least cause them to fall over while running from the human PoPo.

Instagram · 14/12/2021 18:24

There is currently no legal requirement for a road accident involving a horse to be recorded, unless there is human injury that requires hospital treatment direct from the scene of the accident. A horse can be killed, or a vehicle written off and the accident may not be recorded anywhere.

Same for cats.
Whats your point?

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 18:31

Did a horse punch you once or somethjng OP?

Reminds me of that family guy scene:
“Are we bad people?”
“No, horses are back people”

OP, that is crackers. You can't expect riders to carry enormous dog-poo-esque bags weighing them down.

Have you thought of moving to a city- or will you be expecting birds to wear nappies?
