Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

Thanks OP, I have LOL at the sheer absurdity of your post!

YABVU btw!

Dentistlakes · 14/12/2021 13:07

How on earth is a rider supposed to get off their horse, hold and hold it safely while they shovel up the poo and then get back on whilst holding the shovel/bag? All in the middle of a road? Drivers can hardly contain themselves long enough to pass horses safely, they’re hardly going to stand and wait whilst riders stop for to clean up their horse’s poo!

OneTC · 14/12/2021 13:13

I agree this is a idiotic post. It is a minor inconvenience sometimes at it's absolute worst

But likewise the people pretending you don't know your horse is shitting cos you're facing forward - pull the other one, it's got reins attached ffs Grin

Instagram · 14/12/2021 13:25

Well riding a horse these days is predominantly a leisure activity/hobby.
The hobbies I partake in require me to show respect of others and the environment.
I wouldn’t play golf at the local park, I pay a membership to use a golf course and they maintain the grass which inevitably gets damaged.
I’m on my dinner break at the moment but I will check back this evening for the inevitable abuse! 😉

To be fair I did with my old horse as he insisted on stopping and really enjoying the moment with satisfying noise making too. My present mare doesn't break her stride and unless I look behind me I don't know when she's don't it.

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 13:30

Well obviously seen as you could kill someone with a golf ball plus the grass would be totally unsuitable for golfing.

Whats golf got to do with horse shit?

@NeedsCharging
They are both hobbies! I pay to use a private field rather than use a local park field which would cost nothing.
Hence if you choose to ride a horse and don’t want to go back and clean up then maybe ride on private land!

Many of us do but to access said private land does at times require using bridal/public paths and roads.
Your hobby requires well tended greens so you would be a shit golfer if you used a park. Plus a rouge golf ball hitting a bystander 200 yards away could kill them.

MaryHingey · 14/12/2021 13:53

@Alexandra2001, by the look of it you were pulled up for making your ridiculous and quite frankly dangerous statement,then querying why they didn't comment on another post
Grow up

@NeedsCharging
What happens if the horse gets startled and bolts or kicks a pedestrian/animal.
I would presume there are more instances of people getting hurt or killed from horses than golf balls!

I’ll get a nappy for my horse when the police horses have one too 😬

@Justheretoaskaquestion91
Well maybe you need sirens on your car because the Police do!

YABU it is the biggest treat for my labs if they find fresh horse poo.. Mmmmmmm.

SeekingBalance · 14/12/2021 14:01

Whilst I don't have any problem with this on the road, we have horses using our beach and having a picnic with your children with horse poo nearby is really horrible. Lots of locals have approached this particular riding school for a compromise but nothing.

And before someone comments about me setting up camp next to horse poo, this is during the day after people have arrived.

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 14:01

What happens if the horse gets startled and bolts or kicks a pedestrian/animal.

Horses that are on public paths and ridden by good riders cause no more of a risk than police horses in crowded city centres.
Unless a human attempts to purposefully get in the way of a bolting horse then horses will avoid obstacles such as people and stationery objects. So will humans as ya know you can see a horse coming.

If you go on to a public park and hit golf balls you do so with the knowledge that somebody 200 olus yards away could be hit my your ball without literally seeing it coming.

In this scenario you golfing in a public space is more dangerous than me riding my horse.

Is it April 1st?

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/12/2021 14:03

This is on a par with complaining about church bells, trees, woodburners, chickens.
The whole world does not revolve around you.

user1497207191 · 14/12/2021 14:04

Not on roads, but horse riders who ride on pavements should certainly return to pick up the poo. It's absolutely disgusting and dangerous to have huge piles of horse poo on a pavement, meaning people with prams, wheelchairs, etc have to go onto the road to get past it.

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 14:06

Your attempts at comparisons are as rubbish as your links OP 🤣

@NeedsCharging
So what requirement is needed to assess how competent a rider is? Technically anyone could ride on a road and could have very poor skills or even be a very excitable child encouraging a reaction from the horse.
They could panic if there is an unexpected occurrence and the general pubic is put in danger.
What about pedestrians that are blind or with disabilities they may have impaired reactions they may not move quick enough.
There is a big issue with wheelchair/mobility scooters and horse poo! It is preventing accessibility.

@NeedsCharging

But some on here thinks the plebs should be grateful for the free manure bestowed on them and rush out with their bucket and shovel

Not one poster has called anyone a pleb well except for you.
Pointing out that many gardeners are happy to have free manure is not calling them plebs.

You're obviously a horse rider and I have absolutely nothing against horse riders. I crawl past them in the car and they are always polite back. In fact I love seeing the horses, they're beautiful animals. I just think that leaving a humongous pile of horse manure on a residential road is a bit rude that's all.
Motherofalittledragon · 14/12/2021 14:13

Most stupid thing I've heard, how exactly would do it and where would you store it 🙄

What assessments do dog owners have before owning a dog?
Dogs actively kill more people than horses.
Given the size and power of a horse any parent allowing an inexperienced child to ride an inexperienced horse on a public path should be done for reckless endangerment. However given that horse owners/riders are fully aware of the power of horses not to mention the cost your scenario is extremely unlikely.

Again given that police horses freely ride through busy town centres full of disabled and visually impared people I havent heard of any fatalities. Can you list any to back up your outlandish claims?

What assessment do cyclists have before going on the roads? Sadly many children are killed and injured riding on roads they also cause the accidents in many instances.

Instagram · 14/12/2021 14:33

@NeedsCharging
Dogs are smaller so potentially less dangerous and can be put on a lead.
Cyclists can control their bike, it is not unpredictable in its temperament like a horse can be. Schools teach cycling proficiency to children so they can follow road safety.

Police horses are different entirely, it is used for the safety and protection not a hobby!
