Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

I have to agree that the post expressing glee at a cyclist skidding on horse shit is out of order. I’m always astounded at how people instantly seek to divide road users into tribes. I cycle and ride and drive and motorbike so I don’t identify as any specific road user.

What I do know is that I’m at my least vulnerable when I’m in my 2 ton metal box, so the people revelling in how they won’t slow down for horses (or cyclists) are truly despicable.

Also, golf is shit. Maybe the OP should learn to ride; having a better hobby might distract her from life’s minor inconveniences.

AandWsmum2 · 14/12/2021 18:41

And how exactly are they supposed to do that? Carry a spade over their shoulder? That’d be more dangerous that leaving a turd in the road.

Next time you are sat on the beach with young children paddling in the small sea water pools bear in mind when the horses ride through and leave their piles of poo. Horse manure can contain the eggs of strongyles, roundworms and other internal parasites. If it's not properly handled, the eggs (or larvae that hatch from them) can cause contamination.
Pests. Manure piles are prime breeding grounds for stable flies, face flies, houseflies and several other types. They can also become cozy burrowing sites for rats.
Water quality. Excess nutrients and other contaminants can leach from poorly managed manure into streams, lakes and ponds, upsetting the ecological balance and causing complications. 🤔

I’m much more concerned about the millions of hours worth of raw human sewage allowed to discharge into our waterways.

But you crack on with your weird anti-equine ranting, OP.

Even the donkey rises on the beach have someone cleaning up!
Someone just walks round clearing it up every so often.
But horses, nope!

My DH rides horses regularly. I told him about this thread and he laughed and said the B word!

“Tell me you hate horse riders without telling me you hate horse riders”

😂

Ha ha busy using Google this evening OP?

As PP stated the raw human sewage and chemicals being pumped to to our water ways and oceans is so much more hazards to human, animal and plant life.
You may need to have a pain killer or two as the over reaching you are currently doing must be painful.

We live in a very rural area where there are probably 50 horses in the fields around us, all using the road. I easily see two or three horses a day through my village. Even then it’s not frequent enough to be a problem. Certainly not to the point or can pile up to the point of being a “cozy burrowing site” for rats.

*certainly nor where it piles up to the point of being a “cozy burrowing site”

Sorry for the terrible muddled sentence!

TheOriginalEmu · 14/12/2021 19:15

Country roads are quite literally caked in horse shit and mud and other animal shit. I drive them daily. It doesn’t cause accidents Grin

AandWsmum2 · 14/12/2021 19:15

That google schpiel is more appropriate for someone with stables who isn’t mucking out/dealing with their manure properly

And also - people put manure in their gardens!!!!

THE HORSE

Where in this wide world can
man find nobility without pride,
friendship without envy or beauty
without vanity? Here, where
grace is laced with muscle, and
strength by gentleness confined.

He serves without servility; he has
fought without enmity. There is
nothing so powerful, nothing less
violent, there is nothing so quick,
nothing more patient.

England’s past has been borne on
his back. All our history is his
industry; we are his heirs; he
our inheritance.

By Ronald Duncan

to all the people who will not pass a horse wide and slow, please give the horse the respect it deserves even if you think the rider doesn’t deserve that respect. The world was literally built on a horse’s back.

Well said. There are a lot of aggressive morons on this thread. Would you really put another road user at risk just because some random person using the same kind of transport had

  • said something on the internet that you didn't like?
  • looked at you funny as you were passing them?
  • failed to smile or thank you?
Seriously?
Pascaliisafrenchymathysyperson · 14/12/2021 20:22

I drive a car.

I do not own a horse

I LOVE horse poo on the road. It reminds me I'm not in a town... and that makes me VERY happy !!!

Mytwopeneth · 14/12/2021 20:37

Just out of interest, why can't you toilet train a horse?
You can train them to pull carriages, jump fences while carrying a rider, walk backwards, sideways and trot on the spot (dressage), run with dogs and stand calmly around while they rip foxes apart.

I even trained my pet rabbit to use a litter tray.

Or are horsey people the same ones who send their children to primary school still wearing nappies, expecting someone else to sort that problem out?

Pets at Home don't make big enough litter trays.
Plus their hooves prevent them from pressing the flush on the toilet.

In all seriousness though, horses are creatures of habit and usually poop in the same place in their stables and fields (exactly like a rabbit) but when you take them out the exercise and excitement makes them poo more...I have never walked a rabbit but I'm sure the same thing would happen.

Mytwopeneth · 14/12/2021 21:16

@NeedsCharging
The only reason they can't flush the toilet is because someone keeps nailing big lumps of metal to their feet.
Also so, when it comes to litter trays maybe someone needs to think outside the box.

XenoBitch · 14/12/2021 21:20

I used to ride a motorcycle, and I did have a few close calls with horse poo tbh. But it wont be practical or safe for a horse rider to stop and pick it up. I just saw them like slippery drain covers... you watch out for them and go round.
Pretty much everything is out to get you when you are on two wheels.

Instagram · 14/12/2021 21:34

It has been well documented that concrete, tarmac and hard surfaces are bad for horses joints due to the impact.
Traditionally roads were not made of concrete and were more natural so were less harmful for horses wellbeing.
If you choose to buy a horse it would be more beneficial for the horse to be located in an area that has access to dirt tracks.
