Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

569 replies

Instagram · 13/12/2021 21:14

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

Good for the earth
Yes,tarmac really benefit from it I'm sure Hmm

@DropYourSword

Gah, “quote” didn’t work. I can’t believe someone would actually write I'm another one who wont bother slowing for horse riderss now, when i do, they rarely acknowledge that you have - they dont pay road tax, have to under go any training or have insurance and think this was something to be proud about
Road tax for horse riders? Well I suppose it's a change to the usual guff about cyclists not paying it (it doesn't exist, by the way).

VED is an emissions tax and I don't pay it for my car, never mind my bike, and I've never ridden a horse on the road or otherwise.

I don't see any need to clear up manure from the roads, but if it gets on pavements, then maybe it should be, as pavements are for humans, not horses. But how many people ride horses through towns on a regular basis? I really can't see that this is remotely a problem.

IncompleteSenten · 14/12/2021 11:34

You've linked to something about mud and a few rants about horse manure. Do you have a link that give actual figures on accidents caused by horse manure? From official sources not just individual people's rants.
I have googled but couldn't find anything. I thought you might have something since you referenced accidents.

IncompleteSenten · 14/12/2021 11:37

Why would anyone not slow for a horse? They'd rather risk the horse being startled and getting hurt? Or causing damage to their car?

While ranting on about riders, don't forget that a horse is a living being who doesn't deserve to be hurt because the human on it has pissed you off

Member869894 · 14/12/2021 11:37

When they walk through towns and villages yes I think they should

People think that horse riders are all posh and loaded. Except most have spent all their money on their horses so... I loaned a horse and it cost me £110pm. Not posh, or rich, I was working as a carer
mogsrus · 14/12/2021 11:48

@XelaM

People on this thread who say they don't slow down for horses really need to get their heads checked out! Wtf is wrong with you?! It's extremely dangerous behaviour
Yes. Having owned horses I’ve seen some very bad damage to a horseless carriage for not taking care & the insurance companies don’t want to know hey ho
mogsrus · 14/12/2021 11:50

I remember my daughter out one evening and someone remarked about daddy having lots of money her reply was genius. nope, you probably have more than us you smoke

Ariela · 14/12/2021 11:51

If you dislike horses on the road/slowing for horses/horse poo on the road, the best thing you can possibly do is get in touch with your local British Horse Society Bridleways rep and offer your support in campaigning for off road routes.

If you don't want to 'put up with horses sharing road space', then do something about it!

Spidey66 · 14/12/2021 11:54

@borntobequiet

I think you meant their horses’ poo.
Grin

While I understand your point, they can't see the horse pooing, dog owners can see the dog pooing. And yes, while I'm no gardener, I'm aware it's good manure. I never even thought why as opposed to dogs, cats and foxes but assume it's to do with a vegetarian diet.

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 12:03

Are you so thick that you can't see why a huge pile of shit in the road is unpleasant?

It's dried grass and hay not exactly a steaming pile if disease ridden digested meat is it?

bg92 · 14/12/2021 12:12

I have an image of a horse rider on horse back with a gigantic bag of horse shite hung on the side 😂😂😂😂

CityMumma78 · 14/12/2021 12:18

What a ludicrous post!!!! How about we pass a law for cat owners to pick up their pets stinking vile waste from private gardens where our kids play - that is something I’d support!

Down a country lane, fine. in the middle of a village high street, not fine IMO. But some on here thinks the plebs should be grateful for the free manure bestowed on them and rush out with their bucket and shovel Confused
Suzanne999 · 14/12/2021 12:30

Where would they keep the shovel? And then the bag of poo once they’ve picked it up? Do they take the sack of poo home or dispose of it in a bin? And would there be separate horse poo bins to dog bins?
( On the other hand it could just break down quickly with a bit of rain, or dry up in the sun as it’s been doing for 100s of years)

MustLoseTheBabyWeight · 14/12/2021 12:34

@DockOTheBay

With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended? What is the number of accidents? I've never heard of an accident caused by horse poo, surely more accidents would be caused by riders getting off their horse on the road and trying to hold it while picking up poo at the same time.
This 😂
NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 12:34

Not one poster has called anyone a pleb well except for you.
Pointing out that many gardeners are happy to have free manure is not calling them plebs.

@Capricopia
have never seen a ‘nappy’ for a riding horse.
Here you go.

Myself and many, many others on this thread would greatly appreciate riders using them. I understand it would take I little bit of getting used to for the horse but if they can be trained to take a ten stone human being sitting on them they can manage this.
Please, out of consideration for other road users including wheelchair users, children and (it seems, much hated) cyclist, try them.

Alexandra2001 · 14/12/2021 12:45

Eh? I was commenting on your particular post, you think it's OK not to slow down to pass horses
Take responsibility for what you wrote and stop deflecting
I have no control over what other posters write, how bizarre 🤔

You should have proper control of your horse, i'm a on bicycle doing 15 or 20mph, not coming past at 40 or 50mph a foot from your elbow, something that i have to put up with on a daily basis and often by people in horse transporters, you expect me to slow for you but you lot are happy to wish injury on me and others..

No you do not have control over what other posters write, yet you pull me up but not a poster who thinks its a laugh to harm cyclists.... or is it just a joke to you?

DdraigGoch · 14/12/2021 12:48

@Bazinga007

Horses are outdated and serve very little purpose nowadays. Time to make them licenced, have insurance and tax them.
House!
NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 12:50

While I don't think your request is wrong your knowledge of horses is completely wrong.
It's not a case of just training them and having done with it. Horses have different levels of tolerance and while 1 horse wouldn't be phased by it another can be.

I've literally never seen my cat do a poo so this would be unenforceable.

I must say though, MN gives the impression there is a huge problem with cats pooing everywhere but I've lived in lots of different cat heavy areas and never encountered cat poo lying around. All the cats I've ever seen pooing have buried it afterwards.

See dog poo all the time though.

That wouldn't fit on an English saddle
