Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

@ABCDEF1234

EXACTLY 😆

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2021 09:42

But if they did I’d never know whether heronfriend had gone riding yet or was still in stables for chat. Heronhorse poops at exactly the same spot of lane every single time. Used locally as literal ‘marker’. Could almost use it as clock reference.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 09:43

How to get back on a 16 hand horse as well?! Use a car behind as a mounting block?!

Kendodd · 14/12/2021 10:05

Why has nobody invented some kind of horse nappy yet

They do exist and are well used and effective in some cities.
For some reason the riders on this thread wouldn't even consider such a small thing even though they have been told by numerous posters the piles of shit they leave on the road cause problems for others including wheelchair users, children, cyclists and pushchairs.

Just waiting for the pile of posters laughing at the very suggestion that they should even think about using such a thing.
And as for the inevitable 'my horse wouldn't wear it' other horses do and you manage to get a saddle on yours.

So question - Why won't you use a horse nappy?

You've seen they exist.
You've seen they are used and work.
You've heard about the wheelchair users etc who have difficulty because of the horse shit you leave littering the roads.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/12/2021 10:15

Horse manure is plant based and not dangerous, unlike dog poo

This

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/12/2021 10:18

Horse manure doesn’t smell horrible either! It’s on the road rather than the pavement so you don’t have people getting it on their shoes.

Panacotta · 14/12/2021 10:21

🤣🤣🤣

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 10:22

I live rurally so don't use one for the 3 minutes I am on the road.
I think because it's not a requirement in the UK horses are not taught to get used to them. You can’t just pop one on a horse who's never used one before and expect it to be fine straight away. Some horses will never accept tack or a nappy at their back end.

Maybe all the horse poo haters should petition government?
Given that horse poo is not a health risk it may not go anywhere but if people feel so strongly they should do something about it.

DingADingADingDong · 14/12/2021 10:26
@DingADingADingDong But all ok for horse riders on here to wish that cyclists would crash on horse shit?

all perfectly ok to want to harm a road user you don't like so long as everyone else gives you room and slows.

whats this about "smiling" ?
Eh? I was commenting on your particular post, you think it's OK not to slow down to pass horses
Take responsibility for what you wrote and stop deflecting
I have no control over what other posters write, how bizarre 🤔

liveforsummer · 14/12/2021 10:28

And as for the inevitable 'my horse wouldn't wear it' other horses do and you manage to get a saddle on yours.

Horses chosen for work in busy cities and in parades etc are chosen especially for their temperament and likelihood to accept such things. They undergo extensive training and many don't make the cut despite the expert training and go on to be standard riding horses that shit on the road regardless of the country instead.

MrsDThomas · 14/12/2021 10:33

Ive never seen a farmer clean up after driving a tractor on the road.

What about the sheep roaming? Do we clean up after them ? Cos where i live they roam the roads as the grass verges are common land.

Youdoyoutoday · 14/12/2021 10:34

I agree with you especially when it's on footpaths. I dropped the car off for its MOT and the walking route home is past a riding club, the pavement was covered in horse shit!! It's so yucky, it should be cleared up.

hoochyhooha · 14/12/2021 10:39

Ooo! I love it! I dash out, scoop it up and put it on my roses/rhubarb. They are looking lovely Grin

TheOccupier · 14/12/2021 10:49

@Heshcher

I somehow lost my quotes from my previous message. Here they are:

2nd page, BakedTattie: Hopefully a few cyclists have skidded on it.

5th page, TheOccupier in response to BakedTattie: Hope your horse gets spooked by the next cyclist you see and throws you off.

Tumble weed after BakedTattie's comment and outrage after TheOccupiers comment. Is that because riders are upper class and cyclists are working class so wishing harm to cyclists is funny whilest wishing harm to riders is not? I need an idiot's guide to social class in Britain because they both sound awful to me.

Thanks - glad someone got the point. Obviously I don't actually wish a broken neck on anyone but I can't see the difference between my comment and BakedTattie's, which at least one other poster (hello Annotherchange) found hilarious. Maybe if @BakedTattie and @Annotherchange had to cycle to work through central London in rush hour instead of spending their days trotting along country lanes with the fucking Pony Club, they wouldn't think accidents were something to joke about. 140 cyclists died on British roads last year, I don't find that very funny.

I'm another one who wont bother slowing for horse riderss now, when i do, they rarely acknowledge that you have - they dont pay road tax, have to under go any training or have insurance.

Sounds reasonable, putting your own, any passengers, an animals and random persons, other road users and any pedestrians safety at risk because of an anonymous comment on a website and the fact they don't pay a tax that doesn't exist, don't acknowledge your sacrifices in obeying the highway code to your satisfaction, and you believe that none of them have insurance or training. You could always add because they're all rich, posh toffs too, for a bit of extra reasoning if something should happen.

RunningInTheWind · 14/12/2021 10:56

Christ. Here was me thinking “phew, my kids survived being born, looking good until teenagers” and now I discover they’re likely to die in a horse poo accident.

Is there no justice in the world?

Imagine boasting about this Hmm

DropYourSword · 14/12/2021 11:01

Gah, “quote” didn’t work.
I can’t believe someone would actually write
I'm another one who wont bother slowing for horse riderss now, when i do, they rarely acknowledge that you have - they dont pay road tax, have to under go any training or have insurance and think this was something to be proud about

ExConstance · 14/12/2021 11:08

To go back to the original point. There are lots of horses around my village, and they poo on the roads. The owners don't need to even think about clearing up after them because the moment anyone sees any they are out with a shovel to take it for their gardens.

XelaM · 14/12/2021 11:16

People on this thread who say they don't slow down for horses really need to get their heads checked out! Wtf is wrong with you?! It's extremely dangerous behaviour

I have never seen a ‘nappy’ for a riding horse. I’ve seen buggies used for carriage rides in cities with an inbuilt trough for horse poo to fall into, but never anything that could be used on a ridden horse. I can’t even begin to imagine what this would look like and how it would function?!
hangrylady · 14/12/2021 11:30

@NeedsCharging

I suppose the rules about animal shit are different for posh people on ponies though.

Are people honestly so thick they cannot understand the difference between horse shit and dog shit?

No dear, if you'd read my post I did say it's not disgusting in the same way as dog shit, but still a massive mess in the middle of the road. I live in a very residential village. Are you so thick that you can't see why a huge pile of shit in the road is unpleasant?
Capricopia · 14/12/2021 11:32

I absolutely love the insanity of Mumsnet. You go your whole life happily traipsing around the countryside never having the smallest issue with horse poo or hearing of anyone else having a problem either, then a thread gets started on Mumsnet and 20 posters will leap on to say that CYCLISTS ARE DYING DAILY because of horse poo, and people in wheelchairs are unable to navigate round the Jurassic park sized mounds which are insurmountably blocking pavements across the country and that HORSE NAPPIES have existed for decades even though nobody has ever actually seen one.

I love it Grin
