Horse riders should pick up their poo!!

It’s surely a potential hazard leaving horse manure on the road!
Tractors are required to clean up excess mud they leave on the road, dog poo is collected by their owners.
So why can’t horse riders be required to show common decency if they are to use the road.
Apparently an outdated law from when horses were the main mode of transport allows this and prevents action being taken.
With the number of accidents never mind inconveniences caused by this negligence surely this should be amended?

Horses eat vegetation. Ergo, their poo is basically just compost.

Dogs and cats eat meat. Their poo is therefore toxic and should be picked up.

DarlingDarwin · 14/12/2021 08:08

I actually agree with this. My sister is in a wheelchair and finds it hard when we go for a stroll down the country roads. And it’s a nightmare for prams.

allstressedoutandnowheretogo · 14/12/2021 08:09

I absolutely get and understand peoples right to ride their horses. I give them a good wide berth on the main road approaching the village I live.

There are oodles of bridles ways around me, absolutely loads, so what does get my goat is the insistence to ride around the residential houses and leave piles of poo smack bang outside my gate that I have the clear up before I can let the kids go out.

They also rode down the pedestrian path between the houses and the schools. When it rains it leaves a poo like swamp that the kids have to edge round.

DingADingADingDong · 14/12/2021 08:14

@Alexandra2001 , you'd risk your life, the life of the rider and the horse for the sake of slowing down for a few minutes?
If they don't smile, which most do, it could just be that they are concentrating
How would you explain that to the police? 'I caused the accident because they didn't smile at me' may not be a good defence in court
Think on

Just an opinion of an anonymous dog owning loon. Not a basis for discussion.

OP, you are making yourself look even more ridiculous with such silliness.

Horriblewoman · 14/12/2021 08:15

Horses are outdated maybe be one of the most entertaining comments I've ever read on MN.

Thehop · 14/12/2021 08:18

Horse poo is organic. Good for the earth. Dogs isn’t, it’s filthy.

LakieLady · 14/12/2021 08:19

No need for this round my way, despite racehorses being ridden round the estate every morning.

All the keen gardeners pop out with a bucket and trowel and do it themselves.

RubyKitty · 14/12/2021 08:57

@Annotherchange

Oh for goodness sake, this is what you are worried about?! Pick it up and use it for your roses.
No don’t! Unless you leave it to mature first! Fresh manure can burn plants. totally misses point if thread

Surely it's only organic of the stuff the horses are eating is organic? Which is unlikely tbh.
RoastedParnsip · 14/12/2021 09:00

YABU if it's country lanes or countryside like a forest or field but YANBU for residential areas. It's a nightmare with a wheelchair.

AstroBunny · 14/12/2021 09:00

‘Horses are outdated’

‘I’m going to risk a rider’s life because she didn’t smile at me’

‘They don’t pay road tax’

So.Much.Idiocy.

🤦🏻‍♀️

countrygirl99 · 14/12/2021 09:08

Actually fresh poo won't burn your plants it's urine that does that. So stable muck needs to rot down but a shovel full of poo can go straight on. I help run an RDA centre and selling muck is a useful fund raiser.

I did wonder this the other day. I was driving behind a horse rider in my village and it left the most enormous pile in the middle of the road. I suppose horse poo isn't disgusting in the same way as dog poo, but its still a mess in the middle of the road and a lot of it at that! I suppose the rules about animal shit are different for posh people on ponies though.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 09:17

Just hear to say horse poo smells delicious. Mmm

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 14/12/2021 09:17

*here!! HERE! Christ

NeedsCharging · 14/12/2021 09:23

Are people honestly so thick they cannot understand the difference between horse shit and dog shit?

Alexander2001 · 14/12/2021 09:24

@DingADingADingDong But all ok for horse riders on here to wish that cyclists would crash on horse shit?

all perfectly ok to want to harm a road user you don't like so long as everyone else gives you room and slows.

whats this about "smiling" ?

liveforsummer · 14/12/2021 09:26

The poster said 'skid' having a little slip does not been crash/falling off/being injured. Bikes are also inanimate, under full user control and do not have feelings. The response has been a desire to frighten a sentient animal to the point that they and their rider could be injured or worse killed. Not really the same

liveforsummer · 14/12/2021 09:28

Sometimes it's not safe to take your hands off the reins in traffic so a rider will smile and or nod a thank you for slowing down instead. Sometimes though if they can feel their horse is tense they might actually just be concentrating too hard on their animal. Doesn't mean they don't appreciate the effort

Jenster03 · 14/12/2021 09:34

If there were more bridleways to actually ride on and farmers let horse riders ride down the sides of their fields, this wouldn't be a problem.

ABCDEF1234 · 14/12/2021 09:36

😂😂😂😂😂😂
I shall just stop my horse in the road, pull my bucket and spade from my magic never ending pocket, create a traffic jam whilst trying to hold a horse and clean up its muck (whilst no doubt the horse is spooking at beeping/impatient cars), put the poo in the dog waste bin? (in which it wouldn't fit), then finally get back on my horse and ride away, allowing the traffic jam behind to move on 10 minutes later.
Can see that going well

Brainwave89 · 14/12/2021 09:36

As a country dweller this thread has brought a smile to my face. No, it is not an issue. Horses are vegetarians and as such their poo poses significant less problems health wise and is a good biodegradable product for your graden.

Skidding on a bicycle is a loss of control of the bike and will often lead to a very painful crash or worse, go into an on coming car.

But why even say it? and as said, no one pulled her up for it.

The defence of the comment shows you also don't give a fuck about other vulnerable road users, just so long as everyone gives you respect.
