Joggers make leggings look classy!

For many years i only saw men wearing them, men who appeared to have either given up or had a work/sport related excuse, or else they wore them to show off food, oil or snot stains. They sagged like giant nappies and made everyone look depressed and a bit waynetta slob. Perhaps I have bad associations as in the early 2000's my friend's abusive older partner wore them, crotch halfway down his legs, like a giant, aggressive, untidy marshmallow.

Then suddenly they were high fashion, have almost overtook jeans and leggings on ladies clothing websites and I just don't get it! I wouldn't judge someone for wearing them (this wouldn't occur to me in real life)) but im amazed at their popularity! I get that they're probably warm, comfy, but jeez they make leggings look high class, at least leggings go with anything and look sleek and comfy if you suit them.

AIBU??? Grin

@Onlinedilema

Hmmm all these people saying they don't judge. You seriously would not batter an eyelid if your child's form teacher attended parents evening wearing a baggy, grey tracksuit and they were not a PE teacher. Or at your child's wedding guests turned up in grey joggers, seriously? Or the registrar turned up with greasy hair and in grey joggers. You would be perfectly unaware ?
The issue here isn’t that joggers are inherently bad or ugly but that in these situations the person would have obviously misunderstood the dress code.

I would also think it was weird if my friend showed up to two for one meerkat movies night (where we usually wear jeans and sweaters) in a velvet dress with high heels. Or if my kids teachers at parents evening wore morning suits. Or if DH wore a top hat and waistcoat to Frankie and benny’s.

So in your situation, if someone came to my wedding in joggers, sure, that would be weird. If they came to Tesco in joggers, not weird.

Wore joggers to go to an outdoor event yesterday because they were warm and I could put leggings underneath for an extra later. With boots and a coat. Didn’t feel I looked especially odd!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/12/2021 15:02

And men in their gray trackies all look like drug dealers to me!

^^
They look like prisoners to me!

I had to google "joggers" because my brain couldn't summon up an image. Having done that, according to google, a lot of you commenting also don't know what they are, because if the thing you are imagining is made of heavy warm grey material, those are sweatpants, which apparently are not the same thing. Joggers are apparently made from thin lightweight material.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 15:06

Who cares what other people chose to wear?
Can't say I really notice.

RandomLondoner · 13/12/2021 15:08

Admittedly my definitions are from a US site, and even that admits people are confused as to the difference.

AnotherOneWithNoGoodName · 13/12/2021 15:08

Kanaloa, agree. I'd notice if someone was significantly over or underdressed for the occasion. It wouldn't particularly bother me though. Why would it?

Snugglepumpkin · 13/12/2021 15:14

In the winter when I'm gardening I've been known to wear knitted leggings under joggers.

Some of us embrace all legwear when we are cold enough.

Can't say I've ever considered wearing them to the shops though.

Well this thread has made my mind up. Am definitely going to get some joggers. Pretty much everything else I love/own (hot tub, hoop earrings, DP who doesn't earn 6 figures, hair extensions, white van, fake tan...) is considered declasse by the good ladies of MN, so might as well go all in!

shinynewapple21 · 13/12/2021 15:57

@EleonorBronte

oh chill the fuck out and give an opinion on joggers.

This site is just policed by some weird shit these days.

Who cares whether i judge or not, i said i dont in everyday life, but this is a bit of fun on the web, christ.

Lol - I think you shot your self in the foot by saying you didn't judge to be honest !!

I wear joggers a lot - I work from home and they are warm and comfy and also suitable dog walking attire . I would wear them for popping to the supermarket but not a day around town Christmas shopping, or going to the pub or a meal.

My son and his GF do though. As long as they have the right label on !

@RandomLondoner sweatpants is an American term. Joggers are either winter weight fleece backed cotton or summer weight which is more like T shirt material. Pretty much the same as harem pants but with a draw string waist.

I call mine tracksuit pants, but I was born forrin, so I use different words sometimes.

I have just had a look on Amazon UK, under menswear, and under "activewear" it seems they sell trousers with subcategories "sweatpants" and "track bottoms", but there is no category called joggers. Having said that, a search for "joggers" does bring up items that are described as "jogging pants" or "joggers" in their individual descriptions, but they are fall into one of the aforementioned sections.

(I leave it to someone else to check if women's clothing has different category names.)

Aderyn21 · 13/12/2021 17:36

Trackie bottoms is what they used to be he called before joggers iirc.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 17/12/2021 18:32

I think they can look quite smart and indistinguishable from jersey trousers if worn with a nice tunic or long top, and ideally un-cuffed and in black or navy. I have some black velour ones, some brushed cotton ‘sateen’ ones and some slim fit fleece lined ones that I wear a lot.
