To worry that I might lose my British citizenship one day because of the new law going through parliament?

I was born here and so was one parent.

There is a Bill that has just been passed, while we were all distracted with shenanigans with parties and what not, that will allow citizenship to be revoked without notice.

I know the power to remove citizenship already exists but the without notice bit is quite scary. I assume that means someone could happily go about their business until they need to show right to be in the UK e.g new job or new rental and then poof, they can't access things and possibly get detained and then deported when they enquire about it and it's probably too late to contest it through the courts.

I know the responses will indicate how so many don't care, "don't do anything naughty then and they won't put you in the naughty bin ready to be turfed off to another land" but remember the right to protest, to give an example of how easy it will be to get on the wrong side of the authorities, will also be outlawed soon so anyone could be arrested, if the circumstances meant a person was driven to it, e.g you do a sit down protest outside a hospital because they covered up malpractice or, it's decided that a huge Amazon warehouse is built in the field behind your garden and you wanted to protest with your neighbours.

Lots of people will think this only affects 'foriners' so probably won't care. I think it's awful.

@fournonblondes

I hope this bill passes tbh.
Why? Don't like 'forriners'?

Birmingham 6
Maguire 7
Guilford 4

Anyone thinking of replying "iTs JuSt FOr TeRRorIsts" again, use your time instead to read what happened to the groups of people I just listed. Because when you stick to the word terrorist as an excuse you're condoning what happened and welcoming it back with open arms. Ffs, the 'evidence' used to convict Annie Maguire was that she had washing up gloves and bleach in her home and was Irish.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/12/2021 18:59

This law disproportionately discriminates against British minority groups. It is being passed by a untrustworthy government.

How can anyone think it is OK?Xmas Shock

flippertyop · 11/12/2021 19:09

I don't think law abiding citizens have got much to worry about. I'm in the same situation as you - I'm not concerned

I'm law abiding as it stands but new laws are being created all the time. Who's to say you'll be 'law abiding' forever? Did you and your family and friends follow lockdown rules to the letter, for example? Even if you did you're forgetting about the fact that people get wrongly accused of crimes all the time.

People who are saying that it's only for terrorists obviously haven't heard of the scandal and sheer sneak-ery of the Windrush generation removals.

Shamima Begum may be public enemy number 1 and many felt she needed deporting, but for those of us who don't 'look British' it highlighted how easily the government can change the definition of who a British Citizen is when it suits them.

Viviennemary · 11/12/2021 19:28

In any case Shamina Begum hasn't been deported. She left. And wasn't allowed back.

Lndnmummy · 11/12/2021 19:29

Absoloutely. Im going through my citizenship application at the moment. I have lived and paid tax here for over 20 years.

Meadowbreeze · 11/12/2021 19:31

@Viviennemary I despair.

@ancientgran It is literally nothing at all like the massacre of the Jewish people. Dragging the Holocaust in to try and make your point is both crass and embarrassing. Do you start chanting “first they came for” when your DC’s school enforces the uniform policy? Not everything you dislike can be compared to the Holocaust.

Seriously, educate yourself www.google.co.uk/amp/s/pittnews.com/article/167838/opinions/opinion-stop-comparing-everything-to-the-holocaust/amp/

So you are saying those caught up in the Windrush debacle aren't law abiding?
TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 11/12/2021 19:52

It’s really scared me for my children, born here, know nothing else.

RedWingBoots · 11/12/2021 20:02

@fournonblondes

It seems nothing to worry about unless you are a terrorist.
"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."

I grew up around children whose parents had left South Africa as their parents or close family members were active members of the ANC. The ANC was considered a terrorist organisation by the UK government at the time. All the people in the UK had British citizenship and the children tended not to have South African citizenship.

This law means if anything similar ever occurs the UK government can chuck these children out if they decide to follow their parents/family members in protesting for their group to have a say in the running of their family's country.

RedWingBoots · 11/12/2021 20:06

@BeepBoopBoob to be fair the people who say if you are law abiding the government and their representatives never come after you or harasses you, have lived a very sheltered life.

And also wonder why protest groups like extinction rebellion are completely white.

Stop putting words in her mouth. She didn't say its 'literally' like the massacre of Jewish people, she's drawing a likeness to the lead up to it, in response to the attitude of some who don't care about these horrible new laws because they think it won't affect them. Nobody is saying the conclusion (the holocaust) will be the same but the dehumanisation of people ('cockroaches', let them drown' etc) has already started happening so it's only right to learn lessons from the past and feel concerned about it. Nobody is making light of the holocaust here.

Quick google of what is happening to Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia is quite eye opening as to how different groups can be identified as extremist organisations on a very arbitrary whim. They are being jailed for worshipping and yet are completely anti violence.

The nazis didn't start with annihilating the Jews you know. Dictatorships don't start like that, they start with small steps and then bigger steps and some people complain and others say it's OK and then one day you wake up and it is full on and too late to do anything.

It doesn't have to mean we end up with concentration camps, it doesn't mean any particular group will be targeted but when people say, "It doesn't apply to me" about any political steps like the new Nationality and Borders Bill they are doing the thing that allows dictatorships to take hold.

Are you seriously comparing enforcing school uniform to depriving people of their citizenship? Maybe you need to educate yourself before you try to educate others.

onlychildhamster · 11/12/2021 20:12

My future child would be affected due to having a foreign mother and my British DH is also affected as he too has a foreign mother.

But supporters of the Palestinian cause could have their citizenship stripped as supporting Hamas is now a crime. I am Jewish but I think making British citizens stateless cos of supporting Hamas is wrong....

viviennemary When little Tarquin and Candidia make a stupid mistake on their gap yah and end up banged up in another country do you think it's ok the British embassy ignores them because of a grandparent they never met being born somewhere else? Because they left Britain! Or is it different if they're white?
Wannakisstheteacher · 11/12/2021 20:19

@ancientgran umm no, I’m not. Comparing the Holocaust to something so minor would make me an idiot. Almost like comparing it to every law you don’t like.

ancientgran · 11/12/2021 20:21

I used to have a neighbour who was born abroad as her father was posted abroad in the army, he had also been born abroad for the same reason. Her mother also came from a military family and was in the same situation. Her husband was born in South Africa but his family returned to Britain when he was a child. Not sure where the other grandmother came from.

They were very shocked when they found out that one of their children wasn't British. He had been born on a trip to South Africa when he arrived a little earlier than expected. They were very upset and it took some months for them to sort it out. They were particularly upset as the grandfather was posted abroad by the British Army so they felt they should be a special case. They weren't though.

As soon as the son was 18 he emigrated as he felt he had been unfairly treated by Britain. Last I heard before we moved away he loved his new life and wasn't interested in being British.

People who need to be rude really don't have much of an argument do they.

There are lots of laws I don't agree with but they are not as dangerous as this bill. Perhaps you can't see the dangers, perhaps you don't want to but it doesn't mean other people can't see it.
