AIBU to think everyone hates their MIL?

As a mum of boys I am honestly petrified people hate their mother in law and I am destined to become an old lady that never sees their kids or grandkids

OP posts:
WinterOfOurDiscoTent · 09/12/2021 21:52

My ex's mum was lovely, shame he was a twat. Hmm

My current MIL is horrendous and even DH can't stand her, it does bother me that DS is seeing this as an example of an adult mother-son relationship but I will try my best to support DS in his future choice of partner and hope we have a smoother ride.

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/12/2021 21:53

I loved mine. I only have sons and have had the same worries as you OP, but I think that respecting boundaries is the key. I get on well with my eldest son's girlfriend, so fingers crossed!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 09/12/2021 21:53

No I really like mine!

theremustonlybeone · 09/12/2021 21:55

i have got on with all my DS girlfriends and do my best not to be an ass..my MIL and i got on with but i know now it is superficial. All came out when her DS got sick and she thought she was the priority and his sickness became about her. my DC were in a state and she and other inlaws didnt care. Changed my view and i realised if her DS died me and my kids would have no contact from the pil

MintyGreenDream · 09/12/2021 21:55

I prefer mine in very small doses

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/12/2021 21:56

Mine is bloody wonderful.

dayswithaY · 09/12/2021 21:56

The future lies in your hands. Just be nice and fair and keep your opinions to a minimum and you'll be fine.

Too many women enter into a competition with their DIL and thats when the rot sets in.

tallduckandhandsome · 09/12/2021 21:56

Petrified? Drama llama much.

My MIL is great.

User42729209 · 09/12/2021 21:57

Love mine! She’s one of my favourite people and we’re really close. She’s also just the most amazing grandmother to my son, and I love watching their bond so much.

Totalwasteofpaper · 09/12/2021 21:57

I also think (maybe unfairly) that you should focus on what you can give and not on what you can take- so offers of practical help etc should always come before demands!

Take it from me a DIL is much more likely to invite around a MIL who puts the kettle on and brings an M&S meal deal, sits back and chats whilst baby is breastfeeding, coos over baby for a bit, and then leaves, rather than one who charges in, ignores mum & grabs baby, offering ‘opinions’ (read criticism) about parenting, the house etc etc

Preach @Junepir!

Downsize2021 · 09/12/2021 21:57

Daughter in law here. I LOVE her.

MintyGreenDream · 09/12/2021 21:58

My ex mil was ace though

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 09/12/2021 21:58

Of course they don't Confused why would people start chats if all was well?

Twinsmummy1812 · 09/12/2021 21:58

We were my mother-in-laws bubble over lockdown and she came to us 2-3 days a week. I have heard all her stories. I asked her twice ever to look after the children for us (both co-incidentally parents evenings, so just a couple of hours), which she was constantly offering to do and she let us down both times last minute. She has a preferred baby grandchild and I’m sick of hearing about him. She is self absorbed and whiny. Honestly would not bat an eyelid if I never had to see her again.

Nobody needed to know this but I needed to get it off my chest!

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2021 21:58

Utterly unreasonable. I love mine. I often joke with DH she loves me the most. She had sons and i'm her only DIL so she loves doing "girl" stuff with me - hen do, wedding dress shopping, baby shower, someone to go see musicals with etc. She visits 1-2 a week, and spends every Cmas with us. Does she occasionally drive me potty? Yes, but so does everyone else. And she loves DH and my boys dearly

Rno3gfr · 09/12/2021 21:59

I absolutely love my MIL. We get on so well, I enjoy spending time with her. We do a lot together. I met dp quite young so I see her as family. She also has a daughter so it’s not like I’m treated like “the daughter she never had” type of thing, however she is like a good friend to me.

MywobblyBottom · 09/12/2021 22:00

I love my MIL, she’s mine, DH and DDs biggest supporter! My FIL is lovely as well. They are both quite traditional and set in their ways, but they embrace all of the madness that comes along with a young family and help us all
Immeasurably. I adore my own DM but most of time it’s my MIL who’s at the end of the phone or walking through the door when we’re in a pickle!

StripeyDeckchair · 09/12/2021 22:00

My first MIL was the bitch from he'll from the first time I met her.

My current MIL is totally bonkers, unpredictable and lovely. To be honest the fact that she treats all 4 of our children equally despite the fact the her son, my DP, is only the biological father of the youngest 2 (but Dad to all 4) means I adore her.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 09/12/2021 22:01

Crunched... I think it will rest more on how you treat your sons love than how you raised him Grin

Samanabanana · 09/12/2021 22:01

Mine is adorable!

Lorw · 09/12/2021 22:01

My MIL is bloody wonderful and I can’t wait for her to be a very involved Nanna when our babies born in a few weeks. Funny enough I am a lot like her so our personality’s don’t clash which helps 😁

Pashazade · 09/12/2021 22:02

Mine is brilliant. She totally has my back and utterly adores my son even though she has 6 grandchildren. We've been away together just the two of us and it's been lovely, we do have a lot in common though!

I dislike my ex-MIL, but only because of the things she has done and said. I think it’s perfectly fair to judge her on her actions, which I could get into but just trust me she’s a garbage person and she raised a garbage son.

I’m a mother to a son and I’m not particularly worried about his future partner hating me.

AdviceOnLife · 09/12/2021 22:05

ExMil was lovely. Current Mil is a witch and my lovely Dh's Mil is fabulous.. but I am bias Grin
