I’m quite shocked about this and really upset … not even sure why I’m posting but a bit stunned.

YANBU. I’m sorry for your loss op and it’s a horrible policy with no flexibility. Not exactly the same I know but when I worked in the NHS people were far more inclined to work extra etc if they were treated with understanding and compassion.

Good luck to you. Remember teaching is a job at the end of the day. Your school would replace you in a week if it was your funeral.

Ha! Not these days they wouldn't ... extremely hard to replace teachers and school staff right now. Extremely hard.

I don't think you should be entitled to a paid bereavement day because I don't know if any employers that would do that for a friend. However if you have found cover for the day I would say to the head I am taking the day unpaid I have found cover and take the repruccusions. What's the worst that could happen? You won't get sacked for that and if it went to far pretty sure the union would get involved. It's unreasonable to expect a bereavement day but it's reasonable to be able to take a days annual leave

Read the thread, flip, it's been explained.

@flippertyop annual leave? Have you missed the bit where the OP said they were a teacher?
