Will Johnson be gone before Christmas or after?

Sarahlou63 · 07/12/2021 22:38

I'm thinking the 1922 committee grandees will run out of patience fairly soon. So will Johnson stand aside to be a better parent before Christmas or will he continue to drag his party into the shit into 2022?

YABU - hangs on for grim death

YANBU - Who the fuck is Johnson?

He gets away with everything. He lies with a smirk on his face. It's all a joke to him. I think I might hate him.

As more comes out and there is a lot more, its possible he could be gone within days.[/quote]
Ooo, exciting. Do tell. What more is there? Do you know some journalists or someone?

ThistleTits · 10/12/2021 00:45

@Opal8

He's got an 80 seat majority

Until the voters who handed him that victory start bleating then he's pretty safe

The tories learnt a LOT from Trump and the GOP...

The Conservative government have the majority. Johnson is the leader if the party and can be removed from that position by a vote of no confidence and or a challenge to his position.
madisonbridges · 10/12/2021 00:54

The Tories haven't had this sort of majority for 25 years. They won't risk losing that lightly. They'll want to be sure they get someone who has the sort of appeal that can cut through party lines. Hunt is very much associated with the NHS so I'm not sure they'd back him. One thing you can be sure of, the Tory mandarins are already weighing up all possibilities.

HeadPain · 10/12/2021 01:18

"the video is hard evidence of how the machine holds the general public in complete contempt and also how lacking they are in discipline."

So true.

Peregrina · 10/12/2021 01:26

Spot the posters who are unfamiliar with the history of the 1922 Committee and the nature of Tory Party Leadership Elections.

Those of us around at the time will not forget the defenestration of Maggie Thatcher - who don't forget had won them three elections with stonking majorities. Followed by the tearful departure of Mrs T from Downing Street. Genuine tears, not Allegra Stratton type tears.

repottingthescabious · 10/12/2021 01:42

Ah yes The Iron Lady.

May she rust in peace.

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 05:24

Labour stand a much better chance of regaining seats if there's an Eton toff at the top who spends 800 quid on a roll of wallpaper

Lemonsandlemonade · 10/12/2021 06:14

Johnson is Teflon absolutely nothing sticks.

TeloMere · 10/12/2021 06:47

The press and politicians (and Mumsnet) may be frothing with indignation but IMHO most of those who voted for Johnson couldn't care less about whether a party held a year ago broke covid rules.
If Gove became PM the Tories would be less likely to win the next election and the grandees wouldn't want to risk that.

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 07:13

But really nothing has gone well - initial Covid response, Afghanistan, Education, The millions given fraudulently to claimants in lockdown and not being recouped, the grenfell cladding, the postoffice managers, Has cop26 gone well? the price/shortage of gas, recovery from storm (slowest restoration of power in my memory) etc etc

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 07:21

Owen Patterson, Dominic Cummings etc etc

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 07:23

backtracking on HS2 etc

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 07:26

Deciding that younger people should be for care homes by increasing NICs, the NHS being in dire straits etc etc

Sarahlou63 · 10/12/2021 07:31

Whenever there's a party there's always photos and videos of colleagues doing assuming dances - now there's (a lot) of money to be made from them, I'd expected them to start emerging over the weekend.

I'm a lifelong Conservative voter (being honest...). Bar breaking the impasse on Brexit, he's been dreadful. Chaotic, disorganised, economic with the truth, tries to bullshit to cover up his incompetence. Cabinet mostly the same. I really dislike Labour but I quite like Keir Starmer and he runs rings round Boris at PMQs.

It's a small point but representative; we're trying to go abroad before Christmas and the introduction of travel restrictions have been shambolic - one new set of testing introduced one day, government assures travellers there won't be pre arrival back testing. Two days later, pre arrival testing is introduced. Yesterday Savid Javid announced travel testing will be removed "very soon". Aaagh. Pick a set of rules, say they're in place on a rolling basis for 2 weeks. It's really not hard.

For me, Rishi Sunak is the only likely contender to replace Boris. He's kept his nose clean and has the respectability Boris lacks.

mnp321 · 10/12/2021 07:52

While I find Dominic Cummings fairly reprehensible, I feel his exposes speak the truth (Barnard Castle aside..). DC seems to have an understanding of the general public that career politicians lack. Boris should be a worried man as I'm sure Cummings has plenty more dirt to dish.

Whatafustercluck · 10/12/2021 07:57

Johnson is Teflon

I have said this so many times I've lost count. A succession of sacrificial scapegoats (civil servants) will be offered to the media and the public. Each one distances him further and further from what actually happened on his watch. He will not go. He has been proven to have lied numerous times before and it is never enough. UK voters knowingly voted for a proven liar and, for the Tory Party, the party itself will always be more important than the country.

DeadButDelicious · 10/12/2021 08:10

Sadly, I don't think he's going anywhere just yet. The man is made of industrial grade Teflon, it doesn't matter what he does, nothing seems to stick to him. It's going to take something monumental to get the tories to get rid of him and this just isn't it. It would be for someone else but not Boris.

I firmly believe that his 'exit' has already been planned, his successor (probably Sunak) has been chosen and it will all be ushered in once the worst of the pandemic has passed and just in time for the next scheduled election, allowing Johnson to bow out 'gracefully'.

Flumpaphone · 10/12/2021 08:22

No they'll not get rid before the spring. The economy is slowing, inflation is starting to bite and come the 1st January the real Brexit will start to impact with import checks coming in. Add in all the Article 16 sabre rattling etc and people are going to be pissed off and the Tories will need someone to pin it all on and blame. If they get rid too soon they won't have that.

Exhausteddog · 10/12/2021 08:30

Whilst I don't condone her behaviour in any way does anyone else feel like Allegra Stratton has been the convenient scapegoat? There were at least half a dozen men in the room asking the questions, suggesting answers and laughing along, but she was the spokesperson. Some of them seem to be anonymous and AFAIK none have resigned.

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 08:34

I find it hard to believe that Sunak has the arrogance assuredness and charisma (probably too strong a word) to pull the rest of the bunch behind him.
Possibly Sajid Javid. I doubt a woman would get enough support because she is a woman.
Unfortunately Keir Starma doesn't seem to like Angela Raynor - they could be a good combo imv. Him the brains her the action.
It might happen yet. I normally vote Cons.

YourenutsmiLord · 10/12/2021 08:37

Allegra Stratton has been the convenient scapegoat?
It looks like her spokesperson role for the Gov was scrapped - perhaps this is just a way of Boris, et al turfing her out all together - or it could be a No 10 bod jealous of her getting the role in the first place when he should have had it - revenge?
Speculation says the footage could have been recorded from a screen. So perhaps the person wasn't there but got sent the film or got hold of the film and published - revenge again.

StargazerAli · 10/12/2021 09:31

There's no one credible to replace him. JB going wouldn't be enough; we need a new government.
