Will Johnson be gone before Christmas or after?

Sarahlou63 · 07/12/2021 22:38

I'm thinking the 1922 committee grandees will run out of patience fairly soon. So will Johnson stand aside to be a better parent before Christmas or will he continue to drag his party into the shit into 2022?

YABU - hangs on for grim death

YANBU - Who the fuck is Johnson?

@MorrisZapp

I'll never vote tory but I think this latest 'scandal' is a whipped up storm in a teacup. I couldn't care less about parties, wallpaper or sight tests. I think any population expecting its elected officials of any stripe to be made of a higher grade of personal morality than the voting public is on a hiding to nothing.

The SNP had to sack a very respected NHS lady early on in the pandemic for walking across a golf course. Sturgeon and friends get caught maskless pretty often, it's boring and a silly diversion to focus endlessly on catching people out.

Are people broadly happy with how the country is being run is the question posed by and fptp general election, and at present the nation would vote decisively for the Conservative party, regardless of who behaved correctly and when.

Are you for real?or a troll?Never read anything so utterly stupid.And no, I am not happy how things are run in this country.I dont like to be told by a clown what to do.Fuck off Boris Johnson and take tho whole fucking lot with you!
GoodForTheSoul · 08/12/2021 12:00

This thread is a perfect explanation why things are as they are. The moment stupid statements like "there's no opposition" or "I hate the Tories but won't vote for Labour" are rolled out, I'm done.

Stop fucking moaning then and accept you're part of the problem.

The man is made of teflon.

@Tanith

"Allegra Stratton left Downing Street back in April."

Yes, isn't it interesting that she and Gavin Williamson seem to be pushed forward as the scapegoats?

It makes me wonder what this furore (disgraceful as their behaviour has been) is covering up... What is going on that they don't want us to notice?

@Tanith. This is a good point. Throwing someone under the bus that has already left does buy some time.
SamhainToImbolc · 08/12/2021 12:20

^Hypocrisy matters. And they are literally laughing at us.

It makes a mockery of lockdown, which they imposed.^

Agreed. They're treating us as if we're stupid and gullible. They seem to think they can make rules that everyone else has to follow, but they don't need to because they made them, and thus they are exempt. That's what's making me angry. This one rule for you, none for us behaviour.

At the moment they're thinking "party on chaps." But that party will come to an end eventually and they'll be wondering how they ended up outside in the cold without their coat and having to walk home. I'm looking forward to that moment when reality finally hits them.

Kennykenkencat · 08/12/2021 12:21

RedWingBoots
As someone who did lose a lot because of the first lockdown I still don’t care whether anyone had a party. There were a lot going on, finding out about another one makes no difference. It won’t bring back what I have lost

I work closely with a lot of different people. It was ok for me to be close to the next person, no SD. Wasn’t the rule that you could work together with other people but as soon as work was over it was illegal to stand next to them, especially with a drink in hand.
Because you might catch Covid.

It was a ridiculous rule that made no sense and a lot of people treated it as such.

Firesidefox · 08/12/2021 12:22

@thinkingaboutLangCleg

Being prime minister was just another of Johnson’s vanity projects. He was shocked when Covid-19 hit and he was actually expected to do some work. Labour is such a shambles I can’t see a good way out of this mess.
I agree with every word of this
SmellyOldOwls · 08/12/2021 12:27

@Kennykenkencat

Does anyone care about whether there was a party or not.

A lot of other people had parties and met up with other people.
This is news because something bigger hasn’t happened and it is easy reporting. Just wheel out an outraged medic each day and there’s several minutes of news programming filled.
Whilst we might have adhered to lockdown 1 rules by Christmas I don’t think many people were still abiding by anything judging by the traffic and people who were out even though all the shops were closed

I can only see those who have not left their house since March 2020 and those who really enjoy staying in abiding by anymore lockdowns

It isn't about a party, it is about corruption in our government.

It's not a matter of likability. It's honesty, integrity, commitment to public and private standards. He has none of those.

@MorrisZapp
People have been fed a pack of lies for years, that’s why they think it’ll benefit them to vote Tory. Tories give no shits about ‘levelling up’ - they care about lining their own pockets.

Totally agree with @thinkingaboutLangCleg

Plan B can also do one at this point

BigFatLiar · 08/12/2021 12:36

I don't think he cares what anyone thinks about him.

Did you notice the ruling on Pirti Patel bullying? Basically the judges said that Boris new it was bullying but did nothing, presumably he simply didn't care.

He has a large majority, he can do what he likes, people have short memories, when the next election comes they'll be sweetness and light and get in again.

TheABC · 08/12/2021 12:38

The knives are out behind the scenes with this video leak and the impact is significant: people are angry in the same way the Bernard Castle thing made them angry (for the same reason). It's on the front page of the Daily Mail and Telegraph and Labour are ahead in the polls.

I don't necessarily think Johnson would win in the next GE - it could well be another coalition. I am also going to extend the kindness of doubt to voters: it's been two years since the last GE and that one was about Brexit (basically enforcing it). This time, the focus will be squarely on the Government's performance. It's going to be a shitshow. Therefore, the Tories best bet is to attach as much of the muck as possible to Johnson, jettison him and start with a new, shiny, media-friendly leader.

So, the timing comes down to the 1922 committee as I don't think Johnson will go willingly (I am frankly amazed he still wants it - he could have easily resigned before the Brexit consequences hit home and swanned off on the speech circuit.).

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 08/12/2021 12:39

@AnotherOneWithNoGoodNameI’d happily take the job but only if I could play the unbelievable truth game while doing it Smile. Guess that I wouldn't last long.
Watching PMQs I see that the Labour front bench is firing damp squibs against Teflonman again. Trotting out the same sob stories (btw I've lost people to Covid too) is old ( and lazy politicking) ; it desensitises people and they stop listening imo. If the truth is that people who were working together in an office bubble ( I assume that they were considered essential workers?) shared a bottle of wine, a lovely piece of Wensleydale cheese and swapped secret Santa gifts and no regs were broken, just say so. I don't have a have a problem with that. I do have a problem with Allegra and her press pixies mocking the regs that everyone was supposed to be following, even if that was the extent of their disrespect. BoJo is still the favourite fall guy & not going anywhere until there's some stability - next May/June?

Francescaisstressed · 08/12/2021 12:42

We are truly heading to an autocracy and it's terrifying. If you are unhappy you need to write to your MP ordering him to resign and petition.

thecatfromjapan · 08/12/2021 12:46

Hmm.
One of my relatives died & I had to do the 'No goodbye'.

It's not a 'sob story' to me.

thecatfromjapan · 08/12/2021 12:48

And, again, it shouldn't be too much to expect a government to follow their legislation.

How, how, how did we get to a point where this is dully accepted by an electorate too desensitised to expect the absolute basics of a first-world country?

inferiorCatSlave · 08/12/2021 12:48

There will not be a General Election but there will be one for Tory leader.

I agree but I think it will happen closer to next general election date which google tells me has to be before Thursday 2 May 2024.

I know a weeks a long time in poltics - but I think it will be closer to that date when covid crisis is over with enough time to bed new leader in but not long enough to get emersed with existing problems.

Unless something really bad happens before then I think they'll wait a bit to get rid him.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/12/2021 12:55
@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

But the Tory Party can vote him out if there’s a leadership challenge. That’s how Thatcher was forced out, there was no vote of confidence then.

Of course, she did resign after the first vote. Very likely, Johnson wouldn’t.
Yes - I meant a vote of no confidence within the Conservative party - I'm so sorry, I wasn't at all clear about that in my post. I'm a numpty! Xmas Blush

ClowningAround21 · 08/12/2021 12:58

@MapleMay11

What i like about Starmer is that he helped care for his sick mum and dad and his sister works as a carer in a nursing home, this allows a little more insight into ordinary peoples lives.

None of this bullshit is going to win over Tory voters. Starmer is incredibly weak and quite frankly clueless about the direction in which he needs to lead the party. He's also constantly undermined by his deputy who is akin to a rabid bulldog.

Sad you believe caring for your family and others is Bull shit.

I voted for Johnson, have always voted Tory but i will look at alternatives now, Starmer seems a little bland but then he doesn't go around fucking loads of different women.
Men i know in RL who do that are arseholes, so i will take bland.

Its not as if Germany has done badly with a bland leader for the last 167 years.

Exactly. It's the behaviour I would expect from a third world country's government. Very strange.
IpanemaPeaHen · 08/12/2021 13:05

Well Johnson got a booing when he entered the chamber today for PMQ’s. Nice of him to blame junior staff at Number 10. Wonder if that will come back and bite him.

Poetrypatty · 08/12/2021 13:15

It's a desperate strategy isn't it. He's banking on every single one of them not getting pissed off and blowing the whistle.

onlychildhamster · 08/12/2021 13:24

Boris accused labour of playing politics and confusing the public during PMQs. The cheek of the man!!! Labour wasn't in government, issuing the guidance. That was meant to be a defence of the downing Street party

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 08/12/2021 13:40

@thecatfromjapan I'm sorry 💔 I didn't mean to downplay the awful reality of anyone's loss. I've lost 4 close family members to covid in the past 18 months and my much loved FIL died ‘with’ covid just 3 weeks ago. Just 4 days after he was taken ill. He’d followed all the guidelines religiously, as had we all. We can't have his funeral until Christmas week because of ‘logistical issues’, ie limited local capacity.
I still feel that opposition politicians are using consituents’ losses as a very soggy stick with which to beat the government. I don't believe that they actually care - they come out with the same platitudes time and time again, and yes, I know the difference between empathy and sympathy. I'm not seeing much of either.
