I don't want a new kettle for Christmas

Would you?

We had our kitchen done last year and I bought a reasonably priced replacement kettle then. It has turned out to be less than great, it leaks a bit when you pour, and the lid doesn't open fully when you press the button to fill it up any more. I've been looking for a couple of weeks for another one, but haven't seen one that I really like yet. Well I have seen a couple, but they have been out of stock.

Yesterday evening DH said could I please not buy anything kitchen-related before Christmas, and I asked him did that include a kettle? He said yes, he didn't really want to spoil a surprise, but wanted to get me a good quality one. Apparently he's found some posh kitchen shop that sells expensive kettles, and he wants to buy one from there. My heart sank.

Thing is... although it's a nice thought, I'd rather not have a domestic appliance as a Christmas present. How do I approach this? The difficult bit is that I can't think of anything else that I want that he could buy instead.

AIBU and being ungrateful, and should let him get it? Or should I tell him that I'd prefer another gift?

Help!!

Watch father of the bride together and complain loudly about the blender scene and how he should have bought that as a random gift or household gift and not an actual present for his wife

SophieHatterPendragon · 06/12/2021 17:14

Just be honest and tell him.

Personally I LOVE a getting kitchen things for Christmas and birthday. Means I can feel guilt free about getting expensive things but that’s just me. Just be honest and tell him. Ask him how he’d feel if you got him an expensive drill or simile type house hold thing for Xmas.

NewlyJingle2021 · 06/12/2021 17:14

Just tell him outright. This is the kind of thing my ex would have done and no amount of hinting got through to him. I just had to tell him bluntly.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 06/12/2021 17:14

Tell him that’s fine, and that he’ll be getting the matching toaster as his present..

Hadalifeonce · 06/12/2021 17:15

I would have to say to him that I hope he's not thinking if buying me a kitchen appliance for Christmas.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 06/12/2021 17:15

Although to be fair, I’d quite like a nice appliance for Xmas 🎄

Howshouldibehave · 06/12/2021 17:16

You need to tell him.

Your household needs a kettle-that is not a nice treat for you.

Ask him if he would like the kettle for Christmas!

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 06/12/2021 17:17

Tell him he can keep the cheap one.
In the shed where he will be living..

tallduckandhandsome · 06/12/2021 17:17

I don't get why you can't raise an eyebrow to him and ask him why he thinks a kitchen appliance for the family home should be a Christmas present for me?

LakeShoreD · 06/12/2021 17:18

It’s a needed household appliances to be used by everyone that lives in the house. It’s not a present for you at all. Tell him.

BeaMends · 06/12/2021 17:18

@LouiseBelchersBunnyEars

Tell him that’s fine, and that he’ll be getting the matching toaster as his present..
He's asked for a replacement laptop as his has gone wrong!

And don't laugh, but he's suggested buying his mother a toaster. Grin

I'm the gardener - the shed is MINE.

Lol, why do you want to know how to address it,? Just say fuck off do I want a kettle for crimbo,😂

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2021 17:20

And a new lap top is a very different thing to a kettle!

arootintootingoodtime · 06/12/2021 17:21

I'd think of something to ask him for something quick!

FFS, a kettle Xmas Shock

Howshouldibehave · 06/12/2021 17:21

He's asked for a replacement laptop as his has gone wrong!

I would speak to him now and say I’m actually pissed off he thought I would be happy with a kitchen appliance for Christmas. Tell him he can’t have a laptop but can have the kettle-how would he feel?

I’d also think of something nice you want quickly!

But whatever you do, just tell him now. Don’t leave it any longer.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 06/12/2021 17:21

I think you say "the kitchen would love a new kettle as a Christmas present, however I would not!"
It's a household appliance, not a gift 🥴

CamQ · 06/12/2021 17:21

Random fact I discovered this week: Dualit toasters (not the kettles though) are pretty much the only kitchen appliance still made in the UK. Would that make it any better? 😉

BeaMends · 06/12/2021 17:21

@Bluntness100 Because I'm clearly not as blunt as you? Grin Well, not when in the midst of delicate gift negotiations, that is...

I'm another for whom a posh kettle sounds a great choice.
Surely he must know your preferences though?

Youdoyoutoday · 06/12/2021 17:23

See now I'm weird, I've asked the bathroom tiles to be regrouted for my Xmas present as I there is nothing else I want as I don't want food stuff as I'm dieting, don't want jewellery, I have enough. What I really want is not to see shitty grouting every day, that would make me happy.

KatherineofGaunt · 06/12/2021 17:24

Oh dear. I've bought DH a jumper and a spatula for Christmas. TBF, he's the one who's used the old spatula until it's virtually falling apart. And he always says there's nothing he needs or wants so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Justmuddlingalong · 06/12/2021 17:25

My reaction would be "don't you fucking dare!" I feel that even the most useless gift picker would get the gist from that.

Suprima · 06/12/2021 17:25

That is shit present

I’ll happily ask for new set of knives or a toaster from family members, if they want ideas- but I made it very clear to my OH early on that presents should be romantic and a real treat!

CamQ · 06/12/2021 17:25

My kitchen aid was one of my favourite and most memorable presents from DH.
