To be bothered by a delivery driver smoking in their van?

PurpleCurtain · 01/12/2021 15:34

Presume it's the cold and miserable weather but twice in a couple of days I've seen a delivery driver parked round the corner in company van having a smoke with parcels on the dashboard, no windows open. Then delivers said parcels to ours and neighbour's houses - mostly gifts for the babies and children in the family so things we definitely don't want smelling of smoke. Two different drivers. Is it legal for them to do so? Is it unreasonable for us to complain?

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 01/12/2021 17:56

@CheeseMmmm

You and your neighbour both sniffed the parcel?

I find your posts petty and mean spirited.

I find the posts pretty fucking weird!

Parcel sniffing indeed 🤣

I think the OP and her neighbour could have a future in airport security.

autousername · 01/12/2021 18:02

i'm on your side op it's disgusting

VainAbigail · 01/12/2021 18:25

Just realised you’re the op who posted about the cereal bars being delivered to their brown bin a few months back.

What did you do with them in the end??

5keletor · 01/12/2021 18:27

I have a family member who worked in a depot for a well-known courier service a few years ago, from some of their stories, it's definitely not the worst thing that's happened to your parcel!
I wouldn't worry, just dispose of the packaging straight away in the outside bin if it does smell bad.

icedcoffees · 01/12/2021 18:28

Well there's me told - yes the parcels (and contents) smelt of smoke and still do a couple of hours later, according to the noses of myself and next door neighbour, and it's vile

Is it plastic packaging? I use it for my business and buy it direct from suppliers - it smells of smoke.

VanillaIce1 · 01/12/2021 18:28

When people say Mumsnet can be ridiculous and on another planet sometimes. I'm guessing these are the threads they refer too. 😳

colourfulpuddles · 01/12/2021 18:29

I would absolutely complain. If the company is okay with them doing it then there’s no problem is there? And if the company isn’t, then they’re aware of the rules and deliberately breaking them.

So you’ve done nothing wrong either way.

Nanalisa60 · 01/12/2021 18:34

Life is to short to worry about a van driver sitting round the corner having a fag!

Iflyaway · 01/12/2021 18:50

You must have a fabulous life if you are fixated on such a petty thing....

FFS!

Chill out and smoke some weed Grin

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 01/12/2021 18:53

Do you maybe feel a little bit undervalued in life, that no-one takes any notice of you?

Does this lead to you trying to make yourself feel a little bigger in the world by having to have the firm listen to you and take you-or pretend to take you-seriously for a few minutes? If the driver in this case gets reprimanded, you will have wielded power over his life for a moment-is that the type of thing you're feeling?

Maybe instead try some flying yoga-lots of fresh air in that which might help to clear your head.

Take your neighbour-it will do you both good.

Bassetlover · 01/12/2021 19:06

OP do you really want to be the busybody who gets those two poor sods the sack just before Christmas?

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 01/12/2021 19:07

Actually, I've just read your other threads about cereal bars, hand washing, re-washing clothes so ignore my other post.

I would advise you to get a bit of help with these hygiene issues because if they have reduced you to sniffing a parcel, they do need some attention. People smoke, fart, burp over parcels and, quite often, I imagine that they contain traces of urine and faeces. You surely didn't think they were uncontaminated before they were smoked on!

If you carry on, it could be that you end up living in some sort of germ free bubble like some famous millionaire whose name I can't recall.

EvilPea · 01/12/2021 19:34

I’m going to say it again did the van have a bulkhead?

There’s a good chance it did. Which means the smoke is mostly contained in the cab.

WhoIsBernieBrown · 01/12/2021 20:11

If I saw a driver having a ciggie in his van I'd think 'ah poor bloke probably hasn't stopped all day' rather than getting outraged that he has smoked near my package.

Plates and teething rings would be thoroughly washed before using anyway surely.

If its really an issue for you the solution is simple.. Stop getting deliveries and go to the shops yourself!

VanillaIce1 · 01/12/2021 20:17

He's probably touched his knob and then your parcel op when he's been having a quick piss up the side of said van too 😂.

thistimelastweek · 01/12/2021 20:23

This thread really makes me want a fag !

And I gave up years ago

Branster · 01/12/2021 20:33

Hmm, you do realise most items you come into contact with, have been contaminated by worst things than smoke in a delivery vehicle.
Who handled the goods at the warehouse and during packing stage. How many rats and cockroaches are running around the warehouse over all this stock that comes into your home.
What are the other items stored there - volatile compounds, fine dust particles from various substances. Etc etc etc.
Obviously the driver hasn't washed his hands since the morning and has been to the bathroom 10 times already.
The scenario can get as 'dangerous' as you like.

AlwaysLatte · 01/12/2021 20:38

I don't think that's on at all 🤮

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 01/12/2021 20:41

Yanbu op, best report it to 101, it may well be the missing piece of the infamous MN puzzle that will get the dastardly smokey man sacked and/or arrested.

On another note, these parcel sniffing dates you have with your neighbour, do you save the parcels and do it once every couple of weeks, or just every time one of you gets a parcel? Do you need to take snacks over? Is wine involved? I don't know the etiquette.

Mrsjayy · 01/12/2021 20:48

*This thread really makes me want a fag !

And I gave up years ago*

Me too I got a real craving earlier 😲

thistimelastweek · 01/12/2021 21:16

@Mrsjayy meet you behind the bikesheds?

Mrsjayy · 01/12/2021 21:20

"Mrsjayy meet you behind the bikesheds?*

I heard delivery vans are warmer. 😂

It was really weird it was a proper craving !

Comedycook · 01/12/2021 21:20

God knows how I survived the eighties with my chain smoking parents

TheClockTicker · 01/12/2021 21:21

I hope your wash your pearls after clutching them all day, OP.

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 21:31

OP how do you feel about cars and exhaust fumes?

Invisible
Proven to cause s massive amount of illness, exacerbate certain conditions. Sometimes directly killing but indirectly the toll is shocking.

Also iirc one of the main causes of death and serious injury of children due to collision.

Any thoughts?

I might grab some stats...
