To be bothered by a delivery driver smoking in their van?

Presume it's the cold and miserable weather but twice in a couple of days I've seen a delivery driver parked round the corner in company van having a smoke with parcels on the dashboard, no windows open. Then delivers said parcels to ours and neighbour's houses - mostly gifts for the babies and children in the family so things we definitely don't want smelling of smoke. Two different drivers. Is it legal for them to do so? Is it unreasonable for us to complain?

It isn't going to infiltrate the packaging and linger enough to do any damage. What will you do if one day your child's nursery workers, teacher or other school staff smoke?

PurpleCurtain · 01/12/2021 15:51

@ChrissyPlummer

How strange OP. Do you think no shop assistants/hairdressers/warehouse pickers and packers smoke?
Sure, but would like to think they wash their hands - maybe I shouldn't have so much faith! It was the confined space, making something I and neighbour have paid for smelly/ covered in smoke particles, that got me!

Pick your battles and focus your energy elsewhere. You will feel happier for it.

Sn0tnose · 01/12/2021 15:52

Where are your items manufactured? Because if it’s not the UK, a bit of smoke on the outside of your packages is not going to make a difference.

MissDollyMix · 01/12/2021 15:53

I hate smoking and smoking associated smells but YABVU! Leave the poor guy alone and chuck away the packaging after your parcels arrive.

DrManhattan · 01/12/2021 15:53

Why all the meanness?
I don't like the smell of smoke either, it's gross

bigbeatmanifesto · 01/12/2021 15:55

Second or third hand smoke from a parcel?
I'm not a smoker and I find your worry ridiculous.
I'd be more worried about breathing in pollution or covid than touching something after a smoker.

WorriedGiraffe · 01/12/2021 15:55

Just take the packaging off, no teething ring would come with the postage label stuck directly to it. The parcel will have come into contact with plenty of dirty things, the floor, other people’s hands, and god nos what else. Stressing about the driver smoking near your parcel is really OTT.

BullshitDetectionService · 01/12/2021 15:56

Unfortunately no packaging inside the box on a couple of the things (teething toys, soft toys, bamboo plates) but I guess we can wipe them down and air them before we wrap them.

Minceandonions · 01/12/2021 15:59

Please don't be the curtain-twitching misery guts who complains about this.
Do you know how flat out delivery drivers are at this time of year? Do you know how little they earn?

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/12/2021 16:00

Hmm ffs

LettertoHermoine · 01/12/2021 16:00

I can't cope. Jesus Wept, of all that is going on in the world and you are curtain twitching at a delivery driver having a fag in his van. Hopefully next time he will bring you a life all wrapped up in a big box with a bow on it coz by GOD you need one.

The packing will smell of smoke...CHRIST Almighty!

Mortified for you...can we complain? Imagine ringing and hanging someone who sat in his van in the rain to have a quick smoke. The karma on that one would be wicked!

Wind yer neck in and find something constructive to do with your time.

jamie85 · 01/12/2021 16:01

Curtain twitcher as well are you?
Would you like a nice clipboard for a present?

ParkheadParadise · 01/12/2021 16:02

Samcro · 01/12/2021 16:02

I wish I had so little to worry about.

Mrsjayy · 01/12/2021 16:03

I saw a postman having a sneakt smoke the other day maybe I should contact royal mail !

Clymene · 01/12/2021 16:03

I bet he's been doing it for ages and you've only 'noticed' the smell since you saw him smoking.

My Hermes driver smokes like a chimney. I am super sensitive to the smell of smoke and I have never smelled it on the boxes, much less the contents.

Bluntness100 · 01/12/2021 16:05

No you’re not unreasonable, you go after those hard working low paid drivers at Xmas and try and get them fired.

Go you. Then when you’re at it, audit the whole manufacturing and logistical chain make sure no one who smokes comes near your goods.

Slow hand clap op.

Carboncheque · 01/12/2021 16:05

I’m sure you’ll survive the contamination as long as you don’t lick the packaging.

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 01/12/2021 16:09

@WomanWithDiamondEarring

I hope he doesn't have the temerity to fart near your parcels. Get a life!
