To be bothered by a delivery driver smoking in their van?

173 replies

PurpleCurtain · 01/12/2021 15:34

Presume it's the cold and miserable weather but twice in a couple of days I've seen a delivery driver parked round the corner in company van having a smoke with parcels on the dashboard, no windows open. Then delivers said parcels to ours and neighbour's houses - mostly gifts for the babies and children in the family so things we definitely don't want smelling of smoke. Two different drivers. Is it legal for them to do so? Is it unreasonable for us to complain?

Can I be the first to suggest logging it with 101?

TheLovelinessOfBaublyDemons · 01/12/2021 16:57

@WorraLiberty

Christ on a fucking cracker, seriously? 🙄
This is now my joint favourite expression, along with "Jesus tap dancing Christ".
Toottooot · 01/12/2021 17:02

You bonkers, lady

Theresamagicalplace · 01/12/2021 17:07

I've done deliveries before as part of a job, I've been in the van for a solid 8 hours without even stopping for food. They don't have time to stop for a smoke break, leave them be Hmm

AryaStarkWolf · 01/12/2021 17:08

@WomanWithDiamondEarring

I hope he doesn't have the temerity to fart near your parcels. Get a life!
bahahahaha
Shmithecat2 · 01/12/2021 17:09

It seems like @PurpleCurtain has a real thing about delivery drivers/postmen. A hobby, almost 😂

PurpleCurtain · 01/12/2021 17:09

Well there's me told - yes the parcels (and contents) smelt of smoke and still do a couple of hours later, according to the noses of myself and next door neighbour, and it's vile. Behaviourally it's possible that this is 'because' we actively saw the driver, sure. We feel nervous about gifting these items to someone else's children, and a bit shocked that the delivery driver thought this was okay with windows closed and parcels in the front. I'm a bit confused about why people think being bothered about something others apparently aren't bothered about means we are bothered about it instead of rather than as well as other things.

I absolutely don't want anyone to get sacked and the point is I posted here rather than complaining, but I'm not sure why pay rate is relevant to a customer's opinion of the service received.

It annoys me when parcels turn up smelling of smoke I must admit, I don't think people who smoke can smell it and so don't realise how bad it is.
Also I think they're not supposed to smoke in their vans, probably for that exact reason. X

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/12/2021 17:16

@Shmithecat2

That is just so funny. OP you must have the most unprofessional delivery drivers in the country Grin

MeredithGreyishblue · 01/12/2021 17:17

You weren't going to wipe the teether before you gave it to the baby any way???

Really?

x2boys · 01/12/2021 17:19

@LampLighter414

YANBU. I imagine even self-employed drivers working for Amazon etc have some code of conduct about how they handle themselves which presumably includes keeping parcels away from potential source of ignition and not smoking on the job.

Note down their reg, take photos of them smoking over peoples parcels and contact the firms they work for

I watched a documentary about Amazon ,they drivers didn't even have time to take a pee ,they had to have a bottle handy and I think they only get paid for hours worked ,rather than driving around trying to find places ,if they want a fag ,let them have one Hmm
vodkaredbullgirl · 01/12/2021 17:20

Do you have anxiety Op? Going by your other posts.

Livpool · 01/12/2021 17:23

I absolutely hate smoking but couldn't get worked up about this. Delivery drivers work so hard and it seems very mean to complain about this

arethereanyleftatall · 01/12/2021 17:31

@MrsLarry

Is this thread for real? 😂😂 I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life 😂😂
Stay tuned @MrsLarry There'll be something equally ridiculous tomorrow.
vodkaredbullgirl · 01/12/2021 17:32

Yes it's for real, just need to see other posts op has.

EvilPea · 01/12/2021 17:35

Is there a bulkhead between the parcels and the cab?

Bashfull900 · 01/12/2021 17:35

Is this a new MN game? To see how many of the lowest paid members in our society we can fired in time for Christmas.

Bashfull900 · 01/12/2021 17:39

@WorraLiberty

Christ on a fucking cracker, seriously? 🙄
Don't you mean..:"Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the little wee donkey"?
PinkSyCo · 01/12/2021 17:41

Fucking hell some people will moan about absolutely ANYTHING! Confused

CremeEggThief · 01/12/2021 17:45

No, it's not legal, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't mind your own business and concentrate on your own stuff, rather than going around looking for people to report. All the packaging will be going in the bin anyway!

CheeseMmmm · 01/12/2021 17:52

You and your neighbour both sniffed the parcel?

I find your posts petty and mean spirited.

DartmoorChef · 01/12/2021 17:56

"according to the noses of myself and next door neighbour, and it's vile. Behaviourally it's possible that this is 'because' we actively saw the driver, sure. We feel nervous about gifting these items to someone else's children"

There's two of you with the same level of ott craziness... ConfusedGrin

Lots of plastic packaging has a smoky smell that is not related to cigarettes.

*Polytheneis madefrom polymer pellets, melted to high temperature and blown; moulded in polythene film. This process doesn’t produce this smokey poignant smell everyone complains about. The problem comes with the CHEAP mailing bags, made with recycled materials which are not free from contaminants.

Many types of polytheneproducts are reprocessed back into plastic pellets within a recycling process but corners are cut and the waste polythenecontains ink chemical from old printed bags or film and the also glue chemical from tape and glue lineson old bags.

Thesecontaminantsmake foran unappealingmixtureand cause thatsmoky, cigarette acrid smellwhich transfers into the mailing bags and also into your products once bags have been packed*

The drivers cigarette is not the culprit here
