To be bothered by a delivery driver smoking in their van?

Presume it's the cold and miserable weather but twice in a couple of days I've seen a delivery driver parked round the corner in company van having a smoke with parcels on the dashboard, no windows open. Then delivers said parcels to ours and neighbour's houses - mostly gifts for the babies and children in the family so things we definitely don't want smelling of smoke. Two different drivers. Is it legal for them to do so? Is it unreasonable for us to complain?

OP posts:

Rats urinate on the floors of factories where goods are produced. You should probably just make your own gifts to be on the safe side.

I'm with you OP. No issue with the driver smoking but would expect them to smoke outside of the vehicle and not in it with all the parcels.

Ugh,. I didn't realise anyone this petty existed. YABVVU.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/12/2021 16:20

Some people just wake up every morning looking for something to lodge an official complaint about.

FrankGrillosWrist · 01/12/2021 16:22

They can fart all they like, I'm not aware of fart smells lingering for days after or of scientista having looked into the dangers of third hand farts hmm 😆. You tell ‘em OP. The bad response is due to them all being stinking smokers.

@WomanWithDiamondEarring

I hope he doesn't have the temerity to fart near your parcels. Get a life!

I can't believe you actually thought to complain about this, get a life OP and leave the poor man alone to earn a living..

PlanktonsComputerWife · 01/12/2021 16:26

Call the police

JohnStonesMissus · 01/12/2021 16:27

@PlanktonsComputerWife

Go on OP, I dare you, they could do with a laugh...

If ONLY this was all I had to worry about…

DroopyClematis · 01/12/2021 16:29

I don't recall ever receiving fag imbued parcels.
Many delivery drivers own their own vehicles so there'd be no one to complain to anyway.

Many delivery drivers are from parts of Europe where smoking is almost endemic.

Leave them alone, they're in a pressured job where they have to meet very tight targets for not much money.

There are so many more important things to worry about in life, honestly.

TrashyPanda · 01/12/2021 16:30

Just think, he may have exposed the parcels to exhaust fumes too.
Better test incase they are radioactive.

You’d better just throw them away.

CurplePurtain · 01/12/2021 16:36

I agree with absolutely everything the op has said. Plus any future stuff they say. I'm just about to go through the op's posting history to agree with all that as well.

MintLampShade · 01/12/2021 16:40

Do you collect the carton boxes or something, OP? Surely you'd open whatever it is that you bought and dispose of the box. Teething toys, plates, textiles should also be washed / wiped before first use so this is an absolute non issue, plus I doubt whatever is inside the box would be smelling of fags. They do however ALWAYS smell like some sort of chemicals.

Have you actually had a problem to complain about though or is this just hypothetical, complaining in case the naughty drivers may deliver you a smelly box sometime in the future? 🤦🏼‍♀️

FluffyBooBoo · 01/12/2021 16:41

Sitting in the back of the van with the parcels? Fair comment.

Up front, sepatated from the parcels by a bulkhead? YABU.

I can't imagine it being the first.

I've never received a parcel that smelled of smoke. Have you, op?

MrsBison · 01/12/2021 16:42

Lol, if youre worried about this, just imagine what food delivery drivers do to your takeaway.

montysma1 · 01/12/2021 16:50

If i had their job I would have fags smoking from evety orifice. Get a grip.

LampLighter414 · 01/12/2021 16:51

YANBU. I imagine even self-employed drivers working for Amazon etc have some code of conduct about how they handle themselves which presumably includes keeping parcels away from potential source of ignition and not smoking on the job.

Note down their reg, take photos of them smoking over peoples parcels and contact the firms they work for

montysma1 · 01/12/2021 16:53

Do you all intend to spend hours sniffing the parcels or you know.....unwrap them and chuck it away.
The scientists talk about passive smoking..... do you think the parcels will be smouldering?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/12/2021 16:53

Sit in the bushes in camouflage gear if you have to. But get those photos!

ComDummings · 01/12/2021 16:53

Omg are people really this bored that they notice shit like this

ImprobablePuffin · 01/12/2021 16:54

"Unfortunately no packaging inside the box on a couple of the things (teething toys, soft toys, bamboo plates) but I guess we can wipe them down and air them before we wrap them."

I mean as if you'd give an unpackaged teething toy to a baby straight from a box without washing it first anyway.

Soontobe60 · 01/12/2021 16:55

I’ve never had a parcel delivered and wrapped it straight away without checking the contents, and throwing away the box or bag it comes in!

On another front, try working in a school listening to readers when their book bag stinks of cigarette or weed smoke - it’s 😂
