Has my date stolen my keys??

I’ve just come home with a guy I’ve been for a few dates with after a couple of drinks and we’ve had a coffee and he’s gone home. We’ve been getting on great and knew each other before as acquaintances. He’s a bit intense but nothing scary until tonight when he said “I don’t know what I’d do if this doesn’t work out”. Now I’ve just got ready for bed and can’t find my keys anywhere. I’m well organised and tidy and always know where things are. I’ve messaged him to ask if he picked them up by mistake but no reply. Am I being daft to think he might have taken them? If I can’t find them in the morning I’ll have to get the locks changed and I really don’t want to have to do that.....

Why did he have them? Theres no way someone could take my keys and think they are theirs because i have so many random key rings that anyone taking them would have done so on purpose

Isbdm · 29/11/2021 08:25

Yes you do. That is fucking creepy.

GoodnightGrandma · 29/11/2021 08:25

Yes you do.
Do not let him inside the house.

Isbdm · 29/11/2021 08:26

I mean have you accidentally taken someone’s keys?

I’d tell him you are on a call in 2 mins so just need to grab keys and him to FO.

GU24Mum · 29/11/2021 08:27

Yes because you'll never know and you'll always have an element of doubt. The only way you'd actually know for certain his motives weren't innocent would be awful so it's not a risk worth taking.

Inertia · 29/11/2021 08:27

I'd still change the locks. He's had time to make copies.

alborana · 29/11/2021 08:28

Change the locks. You don't have to tell him you've done it. If it was an innocent mistake he'll never realise you've changed them.

Oblomov21 · 29/11/2021 08:28

So he did have them! Shock

EnjoyingTheSilence · 29/11/2021 08:29

Your gut is telling you something is off. Change the locks

Whingasaurus · 29/11/2021 08:29

Just to say I've had my keys taken twice both by accident but I still think you should stop seeing him. Personally I wouldn't change the locks he can't have had them copied overnight but also I'd sleep with doors bolted if you have that option and invest in a ring doorbell

WomanStillNotAFeeling · 29/11/2021 08:29

@Wilhelmine

He’s just called. He’s got them and is bringing them over now. Fucking twat. Do I still need to change the locks?
Yes he might have got them copied
MamDancer · 29/11/2021 08:29

Please PLEASE change the locks and drop this man ASAP.

diddl · 29/11/2021 08:29

How do you pick up someone else's keys innocently?

And then take them home?

Presumably Op unlocked the door last night, put them where she usually does & he pocketed them for some reason.

The only time I don't put my keys in the same place is if I arrive home needing a wee & run up the stairs dropping keys/bag/coat on the way!

diddl · 29/11/2021 08:31

Aren't there places that do a 24hr key cutting service?

He would have had time. Loads of places are open where you can have keys copied. That are open late and again early. Tímpsons, Asda, the range etc ..
UniversalAunt · 29/11/2021 08:31

Change the locks.
Just to be 100% sure.

Although it’ll cost you time & money in the short term, you’ll be in control & sleep better tonight.

JSL52 · 29/11/2021 08:33

@Rangoon

Not much point telling a friend. That's not going to stop somebody unlocking your door and entering one dark night. I suppose the friend could tell the police after the event if you weren't able to...
The point of trying to scare OP is ?
HeidiHaus · 29/11/2021 08:34

Change the locks, OP. Something is very definitely off about this.

Budapestdreams · 29/11/2021 08:35

Change the locks.
He could have had them copied, some key cutting places open early.
You can bolt the doors at night but he might go round during the day when you're at work.

Surely if it were an accident he would have noticed he had them last night. Men don't have huge handbags they can lose things in, so he must have realised. He didn't bring them back, he didn't call you to check you had bolts and he didn't return your call/messages.
He will claim it was a genuine error but you're right, the red flags are huge here.

comfortablyfrumpy · 29/11/2021 08:35

Suggest telling him you are heading out to work now - so he has to go - and you get the locksmith out.

Your gut instinct is probably right.

Yesmate · 29/11/2021 08:36

Yeah I would change them and end the dating. You aren’t comfortable and that’s enough. It could have been another guy and you wouldn’t have felt this way but your gut is telling you this man isn’t the one for you. Listen to your gut.

Definitely change them! It's a nuisance but you have no idea if he has copied them. What an awful thing to do. I often lose my keys but as you said your house was very tidy and organised I did think it was suspicious when I read your post last night.

NC101NC · 29/11/2021 08:36

I wouldn't even mention to him you're changing the locks. Just do it and don't say anything.

Shedmistress · 29/11/2021 08:37

You've heard about shops that open in the morning yes? He can easily have had them copied first thing. I mean, he waited until after the shops opened to respond right?
