Do you remember Heather Mills?

I have been watching the Beatles documentary and got to thinking about her.

She was in the papers constantly in the 2000s, I remember her being painted as an absolute con artist witch. I googled a few articles about her from the time of the divorce. They are brutal in the misogynistic tone, she’s labelled as a slag, a goer, ex prostitute, you name it.

I don’t think papers write about women in such hash terms anymore. Maybe she was a bit of a twat, whoever married Saint Paul would have suffered at that time I think.

I suppose by AIBU is are the press less misogynistic.

Do you remember Heather Mills?
gukvguk · 28/11/2021 19:54

Yes I do and I've just eaten some of her VBites vegan bacon, very nice!!

Classica · 28/11/2021 19:55

Just looked it up and apparently she got a settlement of £24.3m, plus nanny's salary, plus school fees, plus child maintenance of £35,00 per annum. Not the sum she felt she was owed but not exactly a shabby result for a 6 year marriage.

'Mills made it plain she thought this was a derisory sum. "Beatrice only gets £35,000 a year - so obviously she's meant to travel B class while her father travels A class, but obviously I will pay for that," she said.'

My heart doesn't bleed.

Classica · 28/11/2021 19:55

*£35,000

@Smorgasborb

I once had the misfortune of slightly injuring Sir Paul in his gentleman's area. He was lovely about it but she looked like she wanted to throttle me.

Interestingly enough she gave birth about 9 months later so I reckon I was partially responsible for jiggling things around as it were.

The drama!

The sexual overtones and menace.

The plot twist!

I remember her being interviewed and she said that her mum had lost her leg in the same way at a similar age. I remember thinking how terrible that was and then a couple of years later it was revealed that her mum had had a knee operation and hadn’t lost her leg at all. She lied
I think she lied about a lot of things. They were completely mis matched.
RubyTuesday70 · 28/11/2021 19:58

She came across as a walking ego when she did dancing on ice.

Here you are.
As a vegan I love her!

I met Heather and Bea back when I was cabin crew, flew them both on a long haul flight. Bea would have been about 6ish and was very sweet; she had a toy seal with her that her Dad had bought her that she'd named Sealy. Both she and her Mum were very polite and unassuming. The only "unusual" request I remember was that Bea didn't fancy whatever was the vegan offering so Heather asked if I could find her some cherry tomatoes. No problem at 34,000 feet!
People in Economy ended up a few tomatoes short in their side salads that flight...

When I spoke to her about The Jump (winter sports celebrity thing) she said she was a highly competitive person.

I can't understand how a man rich beyond avarice wouldn't
want the mother of his young child to live in the lap of luxury too and
give a generous private settlement and not drag his ex through the courts.

YNK · 28/11/2021 20:12

@Aderyn21

The press said a lot about her which was horribly misogynistic. PM has a lot of influence and iirc did very little in the way of public condemnation of it. I judged him for that because they had a baby and letting people speak in such a way about your child's mum, when you could maybe help put a stop to it, isn't a good thing to do.
Yes, regardless of her character or their failed relationship, I judged him for not putting a stop to the press persecution. I cannot help but think he revelled in it and likely was fueling the misogyny.

Because he thought she was a gold digger.

Remember she was following a saintly first wife.

The Wikipedia article on her is interesting but it's good to know she has manners.

I love that brand, didn't realise it was HM. I struggle to dislike anyone who is vegan.

NdujaWannaDance · 28/11/2021 20:30

Actual newspapers said all this? Do you have any links for that?

Meghan Markle seems the new version of her to be honest- in every single way.

TheElvishQueen · 28/11/2021 20:36

@YouokHun

My DSis had a child in the same school and year as Ben (formally Beatrice). When the cameras were off, on a day to day level, HM was pretty horrible to people. Other parents were required to behave in a certain deferential way to her. But not PMcC, he always pleasant and a cheery hello and no silly behaviour. I know you can’t tell someone’s entire character from day to day small interactions but it is somewhat telling. It doesn’t make the attitude of the media OK but her attitude to [the little] people is what started to get her the bad press because once you’ve pissed enough people off they will, rightly or wrongly, pass things on to the media.
Is Beatrice now a boy then ??
Onlinedilema · 28/11/2021 20:41

I was thinking about her too, after are seeing a programme about Paul McCartney.
Theories were vile about her. Aren't that's also horrible towards Linda too to begin with? And Yoko Ono.
I don't read newspapers. The whole misogynist attitude makes me sick.
I don't have an opinion either way.
I really dislike the term 'Toy Boy'. A much younger woman is never referred to as a 'Toy Girl' is she?

She was awarded over £26m after fewer than 4 years of marriage!
yorkshiremum2022 · 28/11/2021 21:00

Yes, our neighbour works for her. She owns a Vegan food company now and spends a lot of time focusing on that. I think it's called V Bites.

TheElvishQueen · 28/11/2021 21:01

I agree. It's not that it's a hardship to have to fly economy - obviously. It's the fact that a child's father is happy for his DD to have a much lower standard of living than him.

All these things are relative. Everyone in this country has a better standard of living than millions of people in developing countries but, if we divorce a man with a good income, we don't think, "I'm happy for the DC to be scraping by, even though their dad's loaded, because they're better off than kids in Afghanistan".

If I had been married to PM or some other billionaire, and he was fighting in court to minimise child maintainence, I would be sad for my child, and what that said about her father's attitude to her. HM may BU about many things, but I don't think she was BU about that.

SingingSands · 28/11/2021 21:16

DH had some involvement with her, through his profession, and said she was awful. He said her sense of entitlement was staggering and the way she spoke to people such as assistants, was just plain rude.
