wtf, i am in the north west, few hours back the wind picked up like nothing i have heard in years. I tis FIERCE!

Anyone else experiencing it?

It is extremely powerful and quite awe inspiring. The noise is seriously dark and creepy. Went outside and was almost taken off my feet. Trees bent double, howling, etc.

@ShinyMe have a loot at this website. Put your parents postcode in and it will tell you if there is a powercut.

Thank you! She's just messaged, said they're fine, it wasn't even particularly windy apparently! The cat is outside running around in the wind as if she's enjoying it!
Thinkbiglittleone · 27/11/2021 07:33

MaskingForIt
When is it due to hit the SW? I'm in ND.

Look at a weather forecast.

Rude! I'm just joining in the conversation

Awww @Belle716383 there is always one ConfusedConfused.
Please just ignore them.

I hope it didn't reach you.

It has blown our fence panels out, our gazebo has been blown everywhere and the puppy now needs to be let out on a lead so as not to escape until the panel is put back in.
It looks like it dying down now though.

TheChip · 27/11/2021 07:36

Just checked Windy.com and its still 65mph gusts at the minute. The worst I seen last night where I am was 68mph but I'm sure it was worse than that. We are just on the border of the red zone, part in and part out depending on postcode. Mine is Amber.

Surely that hit hurricane status lastnight? Maybe not my area exactly as hurricane style, but parts of the country. Surely! I've never experienced anything like this before

MrsDThomas · 27/11/2021 07:38

Good you’ve heard from her!

Ive just been out, apart from finding the recycling boxes and picking up plant pots which have never blown over before, i think its ok!

The definition of a hurricane is a tropical storm so we will never get one in the UK (I learned that from my local bf weatherman that I quoted earlier 😆) a hurricane also requires a constant wind speed of over 74mph where as what we experience here in the uk is high speed gusts. Nowhere near that persistent wind speed

liveforsummer · 27/11/2021 07:49

@beastlyslumber Edinburgh was outside of the red zone. It was massively worse in East Lothian, just a couple few miles down the A1 was chaos compared to here, and the borders as well as parts of the north east. Being in a city also provides a good level of shelter from the buildings

Lupinhere37 · 27/11/2021 07:49

We’re not even in the amber alert area here in SE Wales, although as I said upthread, we’re right up close to the Bristol Channel. I can’t remember the last time I heard wind like this and we do get a lot of windy weather right here. I’ve been awake for a lot of the night and it is definitely getting worse now. The gate at the side of our house has sheared right off and my dog is hopping about with crossed paws as she needs a wee but is too scared to go outside!

Breathmiller · 27/11/2021 07:56

We've had no power since 9pm last night. And everyone's batteries are about to die. No heating and no oven. At least we have a gas hob to have hot water for hot water bottles, coffee and food.

Oh wow. Thank you, I didn't know that! That would be awful as persistent wind speed. The gusts are bad enough!

Yeah sorry I just realised we were outside the red zone... could have saved myself some worry!! Hoping everyone is safe and okay.

nicslackey · 27/11/2021 08:00

NI here and on the coast. Just been down the road in my dressing gown to retrieve my green bin which was in the middle of the road. Side gate wrecked and bird table over. On the plus side, all those leaves all over the grass have been blown into a tidy pile which saves me a job!! Have to get the train shortly and expecting delays. The building society closed at 2:15 yesterday but not sure if that was down to the weather. Ferries have been cancelled which will not bode well for people out to do do their grocery shop this morning. So glad I did mine yesterday.

liveforsummer · 27/11/2021 08:01

That was supposed to say fb (Facebook) weatherman - I do not have a weatherman boyfriend 😅.

MyNameIsArthur · 27/11/2021 08:05

Its raging here in the south west too. Never heard it as bad as this before. Didn't sleep well last night

hidinginthegarden · 27/11/2021 08:10

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus I use the phrase hoolie a lot. I thought it was mental levels of wind. Am I wrong? Does it mean snow?
I'm on the south coast. Was up in the night and the wind was really loud even here. Usually I love a good storm but was thinking of you all and felt quite scared about the impact!

Looubylou · 27/11/2021 08:10

Northeast here again. My phone says it is dry with some sun 🙄It's still lashing and the wind is still absolutely wild and still rattling letterbox and extracters . Amazingly, from bedroom window the cul de sac looks free from debris, yet something sizeable hit the front door before I went to bed. I'm expecting back garden to be another story- fortunately recycle day yesterday. I'm not looking. 😂One of my family lives 5 minute walk from the beach in an upstairs flat - I dread to think what sort of night they have had - I'm 5 mile inland.

Cardiff here and I had to drag ddog off the sofa to go out! She's not speaking to me now.
S0RCHA · 27/11/2021 08:23

We survived - just. Little sleep it was that loud and scary. Just need to go inspect the damage.
Hope yous are all safe 🙂

cptartapp · 27/11/2021 08:30

NW here. We're surrounded by open fields and have taken a real battering.
Fence panels gone. Power on and off all night. Felt like the windows were going to blow in. Exhausted.

EatYourVegetables · 27/11/2021 08:31

NE here. We’re fine and it’s calming down but our garden is a disaster-
two side fences have completely fallen over completely and the third one is wobbly. They were old but fine until now. One is covered with a huge bush of ivy which will presumably need to be cut and dug out. I am worried about how much this will cost - has anyone done this recently?

The climbing frame survived -
I’m slightly proud as I was the one to put it together and dig it in Grin

FOJN · 27/11/2021 08:35

It's gusting at 40 -50 mile's an hour here at the moment, south west on the coast. Things have been blown around in the garden but it's not the worst I've seen in recent years and we will probably have several even more violent storms before spring. It's fine if you can stay indoors and just watch, less so if you have to go out and do things.

TheLoneRager · 27/11/2021 08:35

Hope everyone is ok after a scary night.
I'm in the Cotswolds and disappointed that the snow my weather app promised last night hasn't materialised. Wet, cold windy. Not looking forward to the muddy dog walk - there are lots of woods around here but I hate going in them when it's windy as I'm afraid of falling branches. I'll have to drive somewhere more open.

Chely · 27/11/2021 08:39

Got snow and a broken fence, joy joy

wheresmymojo · 27/11/2021 08:41

I think it was categorised as a Cat 1 cyclone wasn't it?

So can't even imagine what it's like to be in Cat 4 or Cat 5 like the Caribbean and US!

Spudlet · 27/11/2021 08:46

Nowt down here in Norfolk, hope everyone in breezier parts is ok.

That said, it sounds like attention seeking behaviour from the wind to me, and frankly I think ignoring it until it stops this silliness is the only possible course of action. Have you tried walking out of the room and just keeping an eye on it through a crack in the door to make sure it’s safe?

I threatened to LTB. Seems to have calmed things down a bit
