There is no U to this but I've not stopped laughing since it happened. Yesterday I was in the office of a restaurant. It's a newish place, only small with great reviews, a top chef and is currently fully booked until February/March time. All bookings are done via the website and if someone cancels it automatically frees up the slot so often a customer will know before the staff that there's been a cancellation. I answered the phone to a man and the conversation went......
Him: hi, just wondered if there was a table free this evening
Me: no, I'm really sorry we're fully booked this evening (and was checking the on line diary to make sure at the same time)
Him: oh, fully booked ?
Me: yes, I'm sorry. Can I suggest you keep an eye on the website and if anyone cancels you'll be able to book their slot
Him: but can you not squeeze us in tonight ?
Me: no, as I said we're fully booked this evening
Him: but we want to come tonight. We're names in the town. We can bring lots of people to you
Me: I'm really sorry but as I say we're fully booked right up to Christmas and after.
Him: well, we won't ever be coming there then
And put the phone down
2 things: 1. We were genuinely fully booked. Where the fuck did he think they were going to sit ??? Did he really expect I'd call one of the guests who have been booked for months to say sorry but Mr big balls wants your table so you can't come ?

  1. If we're fully booked now until March why does he even think we'd miss his custom if he never comes ??? Once the diary for April onwards is open for bookings we'll be fully booked instantly again.

The entitlement seriously astounded me. Hilarious.

I know exactly what you mean. I run a service which needs to be booked by appointments. Everyday I get various reasons why they can't wait 2 weeks like everyone else, can I give them a 'quick call' or endless text messages from people I hardly know trying to get free advice from me.

I love that he told you they're big names but not his actual name. Clearly not that big then...

@VitalsStable

You should have started guessing, Erm Al Pacino? Robert de Niro? Prince William? Jesus of Nazareth, is it your disciples you'll be bringing along?

I remember a man in front of us being late for a flight when checking in and when he said to the check in clerk "Don't you know who I am?" She very calmly replied "Yes Sir, the man who has just missed flight blah blah blah to Geneva" whilst bestowing him with a beautiful smile.

The whole check in line pissed themselves.

🤣🤣🤦‍♀️

Baffled as to why some people think is their god given right to snag a table just because, well because why?

If someone said "do you know who I am" to me, I'd reply "why, have you forgotten your name?"

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead

I shall never forget the CF who wanted money off his room due to "seagulls waking him up early".
In Eastbourne. A seaside resort.
Being the DM of a 5* hotel I couldn't really say "wtf did you expect at the seaside you plank ? And what do you expect me to do about wild birds ?"

However I politely but firmly declined any refund. Tool.

Didn't want to channel your inner Basil Fawlty then?

Probably an ‘influencer’. Aka someone blagging for free stuff.

I’ve come across this type of thing at work (dentistry)- Someone wanted to come in on Monday at 5pm . after being told we are booked solid for probably 8-12 weeks ahead she asked if we would cancel the person already booked in on Monday at 5pm so she could come instead and threw a hissy fit when told no

Unbelievable

I worked for a travel company and have many like this... noisy birds outside of rooms are a common complaint! However, one of my favourites was an American tourist who came on a winter tour but complained that the sun set too early for her to enjoy her evenings. What did they expect?
I declined the request for compensation.

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow

My mate has a holiday cottage in our town. She’s had more than one customer demanding the church bells were silenced. It’s called Church Cottage and twenty foot from the 14th century church.

Bloody cheek! I was made to feel like a CF for asking for a partial refund for objecting to being kept awake by boy racers accelerating up the hill outside the bedroom window of our holiday cottage. Normally I would think it was one of those things but when the cottage owner supplies a mobile with the number of the local police programmed in 'in case of trouble' then I object to paying full price!

I owned a restaurant with exh. We used to get the same all the time. And absolutely wouldn't cancel a booked table for anyone. Not a 'big deal', not a reviewer. Not anyone.

Another family that was well known in the area, due to having quite a few businesses came in and brought some extra people expecting us to cancel others so their friends could join. They left an appalling review because we wouldn't do that for them. Including some very personal remarks about me. Despite the fact that I didn't deal with them. Exh did.

We hire rooms out from our church. Currently we are not taking party bookings, partially due to covid, partially because they are generally more hassle than they are worth.

We've had a couple of people phone 5 or 6 times asking in different ways. One of these wants to put on a large party on Christmas eve at almost exactly the same time as the Carol Service. They've got a DJ already hired for a disco. Just no venue.

We have told her:

  1. We do not have a room large enough for the numbers she is asking for
  2. The rooms are either the Church or next to it. We will not in any circumstances be hiring out any room at that time to anyone.
  3. We are not hiring out for parties at all and don't foresee this changing.

The last time she came back she tried pretending she was having a select gathering of 20 mostly with "one or two extra people dropping in over the evening".
No, we're not stupid. Her phone number is also very easy to recognise. Grin And we're still not hiring out at that time.

A fair number people claim that the minister told them they could have the hall at that time. They don't normally even know his name.

A good number think that as it's a church there should be no hire charge. A favourite reason is they "used to attend church when they were young and they're sure the churches never charged."

Are you new to the hospitality industry op? This happened constantly when I worked in the industry, albeit pre covid.

@Ozanj

I bet your ‘fully booked’ restaurant would still find a way to squeeze in a Michelin reviewer or an A Lister though. That’s what is so disgingeous about ‘fully booked’ restaurants. You can ALWAYS find a table if you know someone.

Michelin reviewers don't make themselves known when booking for starters.

I know someone who works for a travel company organising horse riding holidays. Someone complained that the stable yard was muddy, and wanted their money back.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat it’s not the holiday cottage owners fault if people are noisy on the public road. What do you expect them to do about it?

@VitalsStable I have dealt professionally with Al Pacino and I am sure you will be happy to hear he would never behave like that (he's adorable)

I have had a World Leader be really rude on the phone, giving just their given name and refusing to give any further info for data protection (yes I knew it was him but still.... "My name is X" makes you a real bellend unless you are Madonna.

A friend who did Ground Crew for BA had a man turn up at the desk wanting a seat on a flight to somewhere in US (can't remember where) and it was full. He kept saying "I don't understand why you won't help me" " I don't understand why you are saying the flight is full." " I don't understand why you won't just find me a seat." She said to him " The. Flight.Is.Full. Which one of these words do you not understand Grin

My DH runs a private medical practice. Years ago, when our DC were tiny, I did some reception work for him for a few months. Occasionally I'd answer the phone to someone saying something like "Oh hi, yeah I need to see Phil (rather than Philip, or Mr Clark) asap". I'd say, "Sorry he doesn't have any appointments available until the end of next week." "Oh well I'm an old mate of Phil's, so I'm sure he'll fit me in". This amused me as we'd been married 11 years at that point, so I'd say "Oh, I'm his wife, who are you? I must know you?" Then they'd bluster and say "Oh, oh it was years ago at the rugby club, he probably won't remember me" and they'd take the next available appointment, the CF's.

If the holiday cottage owners know perfectly well that boy racers use the road for doughnut practice and still takes guests money they are very much in the wrong though
