Compulsory Vaccine - What does it mean?

WheresYourIndicator · 21/11/2021 19:13

Sorry for posting in AIBU but I know most traffic is here.

So reading the latest news headlines, Austria and Germany are making vaccines compulsory.

Can someone explain what this actually means? What are the consequences if someone refuses to be vaccinated. I appreciate I may sound thick here so I apologise in advance.

I am double vaccinated myself and will be booking my booster for January but I strongly disagree with people being forced to take something they don't want. Surely it sets a precedent for the future. What will the government try to force next?
Scary times ahead!

How will someone that is on a low income pay for their Covid treatment? Or will they be left to die?
*
Err, they take the (free) vaccine?

IHateFlies · 21/11/2021 23:00
@frumpety when he told me, I assumed another unvaccinated person but actually I don’t think it matters. If you had the vaccination and we’re offered a grand to have another, you might consider it.
I can’t believe people are resorting to this. So immoral.

And like has been said loads of times already.... there are lots of reasons why someone feels they can not take the vaccine.

frumpety · 21/11/2021 23:04

@outofservice personally I wouldn't, not because I couldn't do with a grand, but I also wouldn't be backwards in coming forwards to tell him I thought he was a class A knob if he was considering that tactic.

SD1978 · 21/11/2021 23:07

Australia here not Austria and mandatory vaccinations. Any unvaccinated healthcare worker in Victoria has lost their job if they don't have an exemption. No unnecessary shopping- so supermarkets pharmacies, etc are ok but can't go into stores like Kmart and target, you have to show a vaccine certificate to gain entry. Same with gyms, etc- no certificate, no entry. Also can't eat in at restaurants . All non essential activities are still off limits.

outofservice · 21/11/2021 23:09

@frumpety I don’t understand why he isn’t getting vaccinated, I don’t talk to him too much about it anymore and I’ve probably called him a knob (and worse) in the last year. It was more the ‘idea’ he had I felt might become a thing.

I saw the news article with some head health honcho saying that the unvaccinated would be lonely, and have no where to hide. I am surprised it has not been mentioned on MN tbh.
IHateFlies · 21/11/2021 23:13

It’s just horrendous @SD1978. Do you know how many people it affects? Are people strict at checking passes?

SD1978 · 21/11/2021 23:20

@IHateFlies - the vaccine rate here has a high take up- mainly due to use having had more lockdowns and for longer than anywhere else has. Victoria (where I am) it's over 90% now (just) Australia wide it's 71%. Some states have a lower rate, mainly those more north, Northern Territory. I'm sure it's affecting people and their MH- no doubt. I am triple vaccinated and health care worker, so I am pro vaccination as 18 months working in covid has taken its toll on me and my colleagues hugely. No essential service is being denied, the privilege of non essential service is curtailed which I do have alternating feelings about. On one hand, I understand it, but also feel like given the higher risk is to those who are unvaccinated than those that are, then that's their choice.

SD1978 · 21/11/2021 23:23

@XenoBitch - Australia seems to have completely fallen under the radar, we are having massive protests here in all the cities, our state premier (again Victoria) is at odds with the prime minister and seem to be at odds with plans and our premier is trying to have unlimited powers for health pushed through which would have an ongoing massive impact. None of our protests have been violent, so don't seem to be getting reported to given much media time!

Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken · 21/11/2021 23:24

It reminds me of the nazis treatment of the jews before the holocaust, they too had their human rights removed and were segregated from society. No one should have their autonomy over their own body taken away.Objectifying people and treating them as just a statistic is never acceptable.
I am ashamed to be human when I hear of this.

SD1978 · 21/11/2021 23:26

@IHateFlies - bigger shops and restaurants are checking- no entry unless you show your vaccine proof. Smaller shops it's been a bit meh- I always have it, but they don't have staff checking at the door, probably because they don't have enough staff. They are liable for fines up to $10,000 if they are caught though with anyone unvaccinated in store, although I doubt the police have the time or could afford the bad publicity if they were walking around shopping centres demanding to view proof of vaccination status- I doubt they see it as their job and neither do I.

SD1978 · 21/11/2021 23:28

@Cantfindausernamethatsnottaken I'm sorry, I don't agree with the comparison to nazis. Whilst I agree that there is segregation, I also view it as a very different kind of segregation. I don't find the comparison helps with the current situation or is accurate.

An opinion piece. Why is this being posted on every other Covid thread like it is gospel?

It’s rather more than just an opinion piece. It contains hard facts from someone at the sharp end of the pandemic. It doesn’t berate those who aren’t vaccinated, it berates the factors that is leading people to choose not to be vaccinated. As many of those factors are based on untruths and scaremongering misinformation, you can’t deny it is likely that many in the profession will feel this way.

Mookie81 · 21/11/2021 23:43

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Friend working in healthcare is worried he’ll lose his job because he doesn’t want to be vaccinated. He said he’s going to look for someone to get the vaccines for him. Am sure this will become a trend

He sounds like a model employee, full of integrity and compassion towards his patientsConfused

Deceitful isn’t a strong enough word.

I think you want the word 'cunt'.
XenoBitch · 21/11/2021 23:46

@XenoBitch

No I didn't. I'm a teacher who has worked all the way through and no one clapped for us or any other worker who was public facing (supermarket staff, bus drivers, etc). I didn't clap because it was farcical and detracted from the issues the NHS is facing. My mum is a neonatal nurse who has also worked all the way through and she hated the clapping. Someone who is paying for fake vaccination status is a cunt. We don't have to agree on this point.
Suffolkpunch345 · 22/11/2021 00:09

The government forces us to do a lot of things … pay tax, have a license in order to drive, go to school, pay council tax etc

If you don’t want a vaccine there should be consequences; like no foreign travel, restaurants, public places and public transport.

We cannot stop treating people in hospitals/make them pay. Who exactly would police that ? Nurses and Doctors don’t have time to be calculating invoices for patients and they don’t want to be! Would go against their professional standards to refuse treatment to people.

GodIsAVegan · 22/11/2021 00:14

We don’t have to send our kids to school, so you’re wrong there. But all these things are not comparable to vaccination.

Suffolkpunch345 · 22/11/2021 00:16

@GodIsAVegan

Sorry you must educate your children …….

Why is a vaccine different ?

GodIsAVegan · 22/11/2021 00:33

Why is a vaccine different ?

Because the vaccine is a medical. It affects the persons body. I believe we should have a choice on what we do with our bodies.

GodIsAVegan · 22/11/2021 00:33

*Is medical

23MinutesfromTuIseHill · 22/11/2021 01:23

Wilfully unvaccinated with no medical advice not to be, no hospital treatment for covid. The admnistrative systems to i implement this are probably beyond us, though.

alienbaby · 22/11/2021 05:54

Let's not forget that France was one of the first countries to come up with a "stick not carrot" pass that heavily penalises the unvaccinated. With Germany moving towards forced vaccination we can expect to see France follow suit.
