I ordered some Christmas presents from a well known online retailer.
It cost £150
The parcel was meant to be here last Monday and it didn't arrive.
They said it was lost and refunded me £150 (it's back in my bank ) so I re ordered the items.
Now the first parcel has turned up that I've been refunded for.
What would you do?
Do I tell them?
Or do I return the second order and get a refund and keep this order that's already been refunded
Or is that awful ?

"I think that says a lot about your upbringing"

Yep. When I was a poor student with literally £10 in my bank account I found a £20 note in a cash machine - one of the old style ones where the cas dropped into a tray. I handed it in despite that £20 being enough to feed me for 2 weeks because, y'know, I have morals.

OffRoadFozzyBear · 21/11/2021 17:40

Similar thing happened to me once. Order didn’t arrive, refunded, reordered, then both orders were delivered. The company told me to keep them, and even sent me a voucher for the inconvenience! It was nice decorative household stuff and clothing, so folk got some extra nice Christmas presents that year.

videovixen · 21/11/2021 17:41

@veredd

Maybe I am not as honest as you all here but I'm not exactly rolling in money so I'm going to return the second order for a refund and keep first
I'd do this too tbh.

One time I ordered from Very for a specific day when I was off work. They said they delivered it to a neighbour the day before when I was at work. In my delivery notes I asked them to not leave with any neighbours if I wasn't in (I was new to the area and didn't know anyone)

Got home, no note to say which neighbour this was left with. Knocked around, no one had it. Contacted Very to say I couldn't find my parcel and no neighbour had it even though I said it shouldn't be left with a neighbour. They did an investigation and refunded me what the order was worth, £150.

A week later I was getting the bins from the garden to take them round to the front for bin day. I only saw the parcel had been left at the garden door🙃 didn't contact Very and enjoyed my free goods. They shouldn't have left it there anyway🤷‍♀️

HireStarter · 21/11/2021 17:41

The right thing to do is let them know.

Whether or not you do the right thing depends solely on your morals.

FWIW I would tell them, especially given it's worth £150. Shops are on their knees at the moment

TractorAndHeadphones · 21/11/2021 17:41

@claymodels the second refund has nothing to do with the first. As you can return good for any reason it would be assumed to be that and not that the OP got the first delivery anyway.

woodhill · 21/11/2021 17:42

Yes I got 2 duplicate t shirts in a delivery charged for one but still took it back to shop and told them

HireStarter · 21/11/2021 17:42

@videovixen

They didn't leave it there. The courier did.

purplesky18 · 21/11/2021 17:42

I’d keep it for a while to see if they noticed then refunnd it with the chance to bag some extra money, guarantee half the people commenting about morals would do the same thing if they were really in that situation.

TractorAndHeadphones · 21/11/2021 17:42

Also the net result is that OP gets her goods for free

TractorAndHeadphones · 21/11/2021 17:43

Not online retailers they’ve made massive profits throughout the pandemic
Stinkyslippers · 21/11/2021 17:45

I’ve had this-one was an oven scraper thingy

They sent two-and wanted me to post it back at my expense

I still have two oven scraper thingys

A bag of pink rock salt-that arrived two years after my refund

A jigsaw-sent it back at their expense

And I ordered 8 face flannels

One parcel arrived

Then another-and another-and another-and another (I’d gone away for a week so they where just posted through my door)

I ended up with 72 face flannels in the end-I ended up emailing them, begging them not to send any more and would they please send a returns label so I could send back 64 flannels

Never heard a thing back and wasn’t charged for the extra so god knows what happened there!

I ended up giving them away as I only wanted 8 to start with!

videovixen · 21/11/2021 17:46

Exactly. The courier left it there and Yodel has a contract with Very to deliver a customer's goods to a safe location.
Either way it wasn't my problem @HireStarter

justlonelystars · 21/11/2021 17:46

I once ordered travel currency from a well known department store. It was stolen by the delivery driver but they gave me the currency that they had in stock so I wouldn’t have to reorder and wait. Then they refunded me the cash to my bank account! I phoned up to let them know but they said to keep it as a gesture of goodwill. It was over £500. Bizarre. Literally gave me free money. But yes, if the second parcel arrives I’d contact them to see what they said.

HarrisonStickle · 21/11/2021 17:48
@claymodels it wasn't a replacement order
It was separate order with different order numbers so ....
Have you put a different name and address on them? This is the only way I see this working without consequence.

Otherwise it'll flag up somewhere along the line that you said you didn't receive one then sent the replacement back. And that will have their system's spidey senses tingling.

So you’re happy to be a thief?
HarrisonStickle · 21/11/2021 17:51

Theft of any kind pushes up the cost of items within the retail sector because the companies have to re-coup money elsewhere.

How much money are Amazon costing us because they barely pay any taxes?

ViolinAndGuitar · 21/11/2021 17:52

You should inform the retailer and return the 2nd box if you’ve received it.

ilovebrie8 · 21/11/2021 17:55

It’s theft if you keep it that the facts simple as...I think you should return it...

queenbei · 21/11/2021 17:55

Due to covid they now won't except it back after you've received it so if you did want to make some money you could consider selling the second lot you received in error. But as most have said definitely let them know and they won't ask for it back but so they can save it happening many more times. There seems to be an issue somewhere and it would be nice to let the company know so they can investigate it further.

hiredandsqueak · 21/11/2021 17:58

Dd ordered flowers for her friend from M&S. Completely unaware I ordered the same flowers for dd. Dd received my flowers and contacted M&S complaining they had sent her friend's flowers to her address. M&S organised a second bunch to be sent to her friend telling dd to enjoy the flowers sent in error. She later called me and told me of their error. I asked if she had looked at the card which she hadn't done but did then. She contacted M&S again to tell them of her mistake and they just thanked her for phoning and told her to tell her friend to enjoy the flowers from M&S. I would phone chances are they won't want the first parcel back

Lougle · 21/11/2021 17:58

It's just a matter of honesty or dishonesty. I took 3 bras and 2 packets of pants to the till in M&S today. Young man at the till was fumbling a bit. I was watching the till as he scanned things, then he put them all in the bag, but the balance was only £41. I said "I don't think you've scanned them all, because it definitely shouldn't come to £41." He looked a bit puzzled and said he thought it was ok. I told him it should be around £60. Eventually he rescanned it and found the missing item. I paid and left. I could have walked away with a free bra, but I'm honest.

Do the right thing and tell them.

Landof · 21/11/2021 18:00

Wow shocking! Please tell the truth!

MynameisJune · 21/11/2021 18:03

Two wrongs don’t make a right, theft is theft, if you’re going to steal from a company don’t then complain that they legally get around paying taxes.
Bluskyenonstop · 21/11/2021 18:06

I had similar happened last year. It totally wasn’t my fault and I did what you do.
An item was delivered to a different address- not in my road.
When I tracked it and it said delivered I immediately contacted them and they said it was delivered and told me to check my neighbours.
I put a Facebook post asking if anyone accepted my parcel my error- heard nothing for two days.
So I called them again and this time they refunded me (£10 )
I also re ordered it again .
The day 3 after the new order arrived I got a message from someone locally that they got my parcel.
I went to pick it up- it was all ripped and opened- obviously they opened it- did not like it and decided to gave it me back.
I binned it anyway.

claymodels · 21/11/2021 18:09

Who isn't accepting returns? I shop online regularly and don't know of any stores not allowing returns due to covid. Even in lockdown returns were allowed
