Store refunded me then sent the goods ....

I ordered some Christmas presents from a well known online retailer.
It cost £150
The parcel was meant to be here last Monday and it didn't arrive.
They said it was lost and refunded me £150 (it's back in my bank ) so I re ordered the items.
Now the first parcel has turned up that I've been refunded for.
What would you do?
Do I tell them?
Or do I return the second order and get a refund and keep this order that's already been refunded
Or is that awful ?

Is it studio? They're a shower of shits for this nonsense

yellowflowersintherain · 21/11/2021 17:13

This has actually happened to me twice. Both times I was honest. One retailer asked me to send the items back, the other just said I could keep them.

Personally I couldn't not own up when it's an amount like that.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 21/11/2021 17:14

I must admit I am surprised at how many people would keep/return this and get another refund.

They were nice enough to refund you quickly and now you feel no qualms about essentially stealing £150 of merchandise and profiting from an error.

I just would never do something like this or even consider it.

I feel like there is no ambiguity-it is wrong and trying to rationalise it by saying "they are a big company" doesn't make it right.

AntiCornLawLeague · 21/11/2021 17:14

But surely they'll have a record of you returning the first lot, will they not?

Maybe not! I actually think keeping them isn't that bad, but I think making a £150 profit veers into theft / fraud territory? I wouldn't do it even if I didn't care about the company as I'd be scared I'd get caught tbh.

WellTidy · 21/11/2021 17:14

This has happened twice to me. Once with Gap and once with Amazon. Both times they told me to keep the duplicate order. I the donated the Gap kids clothes to a local charity and gave the Amazon books to family members as part of their Christmas presents!

hairypaws · 21/11/2021 17:16

In all honesty, I'd return one order for a refund and keep the other. Unless it was items I'd get use out of, even with them being duplicates. I wouldn't come clean though.

5zeds · 21/11/2021 17:17

I’d call them and let them decide what to do. I would never steal from them. Why would you do that?Shock

SunshineCake1 · 21/11/2021 17:18

I'd tell the truth. It would be worth the embarrassment of being found out if I had have considered keeping it. Which I wouldn't. It is irrelevant you only have £100 in the bank. You've got the items you paid for so you clearly wanted them enough and could afford them. Keeping the second or sending back the second and asking for another refund is stealing.

viques · 21/11/2021 17:18

@veredd

It's a massive world wide company worth billions. I have about £100 in my bank I can't say I feel too guilty but I guess others are different
But spent £150 online.......
veredd · 21/11/2021 17:18

@claymodels it wasn't a replacement order
It was separate order with different order numbers so ....

FlickerBeat · 21/11/2021 17:19

Keep it.

romdowa · 21/11/2021 17:19

I once ordered an expensive book online for my father for Xmas. Got an email a few days later to say that the book was out of stock and they couldn't honour the order, got issued a refund and a few days later the book turned up. I rang the company and was told on the phone that as far as they we're concerned , they didn't send the book , it came in their packaging with their name all over it but they had no interest. So I enjoyed gifting my free book in the knowledge that I at least tried to do the right thing.

woodhill · 21/11/2021 17:21

Just tell them OP

Best to be honest

I hope they cop it. Nothing good ever comes of dishonesty, I don't care if it the corner shop or a big multi national, the energy is the same. It's stealing. Twill come back on ya!

So what? They will still be notified that you have received a refund and the order.

thaisweetchilli · 21/11/2021 17:22

@Fidgetty

Their mistake of course you keep it and say nothing. I'm clearly not as virtuous as most posters though Grin

For me the headache of returning it would make me say nothing. I don't have time for extra errands - particularly not to line the pockets of some millionaire. Would even think twice about it.

Exactly!!

I think that says a lot about your upbringing
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/11/2021 17:28

I had this with ASOS recently. My order was stuck with Hermes for six days despite having premier delivery, so I did the live chat and the agent declared it lost and sent a replacement. I honestly shut the chat down and the Hermes lady turned up. I did another chat when the second parcel turned up, explained what had happened, then returned the extra package.

They gave me a £10 gift voucher, which coupled with a discount event later on, meant I got a Nars lipstick virtually free - I felt like that was good karma!

BeautifulBirds · 21/11/2021 17:28

I've had similar, I emailed the company last week to let them know and they haven't to back to me. Gonna leave it 14 days then keep the delivery. (it's too big and heavy for me to areangw and pay to send it back.)

User5252727 · 21/11/2021 17:32

You can refuse delivery of the second order and it will just be returned to them.

You should not try and get another refund.

VitalsStable · 21/11/2021 17:32

I'd ring and be honest. They may tell you to keep it. At least your conscience will be clear.

There's a £1000 rug sitting in my loft after we were sent 2, I rang up the department store and told them, the customer service rep was shocked I'd rung and said they've no record of 2 being sent and is she were me I'd keep it or sell it. I'm terrified they'll debit my account for the second rug so haven't even opened it! I tried though.

BakeOffRewatch · 21/11/2021 17:32

Was it Hermes? I had this with a Boden parcel. Hermes “lost” it, Boden sent a replacement the next day with DPD. On the same day the Hermes driver turned up and said they “found” it in the back of their van. I refused it, and then they tried to deliver it again 3 days later! Stressed me out about being charged because it was a few sizes of each to try.

I would just return it, it’s not worth the hassle.

MynameisJune · 21/11/2021 17:34

Theft of any kind pushes up the cost of items within the retail sector because the companies have to re-coup money elsewhere.

So I hope anyone that’s ever had a delivery and kept it doesn’t ever complain about rising costs of things.

I find this kind of attitude abhorrent and selfish but most people are selfish nowadays.

Chances are that due to covid they’d let you keep the other items. I’ve had double a delivery in the same circumstances, told the company and they told me to keep both.

SusieBob · 21/11/2021 17:36

@Coffeylikethedrink

If it’s a huge company like Amazon I’d frankly keep it. They have insurance and hardly lose anything I would return it if it was a small or medium sized company
Such a bullshit argument. Plenty of so-called huge companies have gone under in recent years.

Plus it doesn't make it any less of a dick move to keep something you haven't paid for.

Saucery · 21/11/2021 17:36

John Lewis did this to me a couple of times, so I don’t order from them any more. I did phone up and pay though, because I had the items, but I pointed out I had double the items I needed and that they need to sort their systems out so people aren’t out of pocket.
