I ordered some Christmas presents from a well known online retailer.
It cost £150
The parcel was meant to be here last Monday and it didn't arrive.
They said it was lost and refunded me £150 (it's back in my bank ) so I re ordered the items.
Now the first parcel has turned up that I've been refunded for.
What would you do?
Do I tell them?
Or do I return the second order and get a refund and keep this order that's already been refunded
Or is that awful ?

OP posts:
Sciurus83 · 23/11/2021 07:13

I'd keep it and not think twice, unless it was a small independent. Their fuck up!

SofiaMichelle · 23/11/2021 07:28

I'm actually surprised at just how many dishonest people there are on here.

I'm sure you all think that you're nice, honest people and that "it's only because it's a big company..." that you're advocating theft, but deep down you must know you're untrustworthy, deceitful twats.

LifesABotch · 23/11/2021 07:40

They'll know both orders have been delivered and you're being dishonest? If that's what you're asking? Confused
Whether or not they care, is irrelevant surely?

SusieBob · 23/11/2021 07:41

@liveforsummer

Yep. When I was a poor student with literally £10 in my bank account I found a £20 note in a cash machine - one of the old style ones where the cas dropped into a tray. I handed it in despite that £20 being enough to feed me for 2 weeks because, y'know, I have morals.

This was an individual's cash. Could have been the last £20 in their bank needed to feed their own family for 2 weeks. It's not really a comparison

Yes it is.

It's theft. It's exactly the same.

It's scummy whoever you steal from

videobaby123 · 23/11/2021 08:51

Oh OP, do let us know if you receive a refund for the second item! I'm sure you will btw

Most people aren’t so rigid. Even the courts recognise this. That’s why fines are ‘up to’ a certain figure and there are things like mitigating circumstances.

I personally don’t go around thinking that I’m a ‘nice, honest’ person. Because I can’t guarantee that I’ll behave honestly in 100% of situations. Nobody can - and nobody has been.

Not telling them about the parcel isn’t good but it doesn’t deserve the venom on this thread.

He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone…

JudgeJ · 23/11/2021 11:47

@GiltEdges

I'd call and tell them. Happened to me once before with John Lewis. They just told me to keep it 🤷🏼‍♀️
Happened to me with Laithwaites wine, I ordered a case they had on offer to be delivered to school before the end of term, on the last day it hadn't arrived and I phoned them. It had been delivered, to a pub with a similar name as the school, they sent me another case, special delivery. to my home in time for Christmas. In January I found a second case had been delivered to school then I got a call from them , apologising for the earlier cock up and saying they were sending me a case to home! I was so tempted but actually told them that I already had one and another was here too, Keep it, for the hassle, too much paperwork to return it!
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/11/2021 12:50

”Why bother ringing if you're just to be told to keep it?”

Personally, so I can keep it with a clear conscience, @liveforsummer.

Bookworm20 · 23/11/2021 14:35

@liveforsummer

I feel I live in a different world sometimes, clearly a terrible dishonest one but I don't know a soul who wouldn't just keep it. 😆 I'd probably not go to the effort of returning it though, Just keep to give as gifts etc
Same here. Its hardly the crime of the century. I think everyone I know in real life would just keep the lost parcel.

And it is very different coming from a huge multi national company than if it was from a small independent retailer. Again, I think everyone I know in those circumstances would return it.

melj1213 · 23/11/2021 15:22

Keeping a £150 parcel that you know was reported lost and refunded is theft. To then send back the "lost item" for another refund whilst keeping the replacement is fraud. Whether it is from Amazon or Beryl on Etsy, it is still dishonest.

It doesn't matter how you dress it up or what justification you give it is theft and I don't understand why some people are so proud to be a thief and seem to think it is a deficiency for someone to have basic morals and be honest.

If you contact the company to inform them of the error and they choose to let you keep the item then it is different, but to just unilaterally decide to keep something that you know does not belong to you is morally and legally wrong.

TractorAndHeadphones · 23/11/2021 15:27

@Bookworm20 so much emotion wonder whether these people insisting on their honesty are insecure

Bookworm20 · 23/11/2021 15:39

Yes, honestly couldn't get so worked up over this. I have good morals and am honest and am happy that I am overall a good and decent person. But a lost parcel turning up which the company had already refunded and had been written off? Yep, I'd be keeping it.

Mind you I did 'steal' a carrier bag from Tesco once. Perhaps I've entered the slippery slope to a life a crime and am in fact the scum of society after all.

If you are happy to knowingly keep items that don't belong to you without making any effort to return them then you do not have good morals nor are you honest because you are literally stealing.

You can justify it however you like but at the end of the day you are still keeping something that is not yours and if you are happy to do that without a second thought then you are demonstrably not honest.

TractorAndHeadphones · 23/11/2021 16:29

@melj1213 Come to think of it it’s not actually clear whom the parcel belongs to.
Because in this case there’s a pre-existing contractual obligation. Not the same as shoplifting, or picking someone’s lost money up or any of the other examples.
When you return something it’s very clear that the refund is for an exchange of goods.
When you’re refunded for a non-delivered item however you don’t know whether they’re acknowledging
a) Non receipt of the item alone
b) Non receipt of item within an agreed time frame .

If the company had sent the OP a replacement it would be clearly a) but it’s not.

Therefore it’s not something that clearly doesn’t belong to the OP.

😂 I actually never pay for a carrier bag so I'm definitely the thief of the century according to this thread

Swing and a miss.

Some people just have actual morals, and get annoyed at things like this because where do you think the money to cover the OP's refund is coming from?

It's like people who claim that fare dodging is a victimless crime. It's not. It just results in fares going up for everyone. So thanks for that.

Amazing how some people try to justify people being arseholes.

"It wasn't murder, he just fell on this knife I happened to be carrying".

TractorAndHeadphones · 23/11/2021 16:58

@SusieBob you’re not really engaging with what I said are you?
Fare dodging ; direct correlation between service used and revenue. Obviously wrong.
I have already explained why this isn’t necessarily the case for a late parcel.

Happy to accept more reasoned examples engaging with my points but the fact that you’ve had an emotional reaction to my post just proves what I said earlie

Hetyanni · 23/11/2021 17:09

@veredd

Maybe I am not as honest as you all here but I'm not exactly rolling in money so I'm going to return the second order for a refund and keep first
That's what I would do tbh. If it is a big retailer rather than a small business.
videobaby123 · 23/11/2021 17:28

Can anyone say why they'd return it if it was a big retailer but keep it if it was a small business?? I'd happily return it for both but I do think I'd feel a bit bad (and maybe even consider being honest) if it was a small business. Just wondered what the reasoning was for returning and getting the money back if it was from a big retailer

DontBeCatty · 23/11/2021 17:44

I have had this happen a lot of times and I always let the retailer know. Often I’m told to keep the item. I think it’s stealing to keep the item if you haven’t been told you can. It’s weird how people have different morals. It just wouldn’t cross my mind to keep it. Luckily I think most people are honest.

TBH I’ve more time for people who are honest about being thieves, it’s the people (like the OP) who try to justify it that I find the scummiest.

It really doesn't.

Excuse it all you want; the fact is the op is knowingly deceiving the retail and/or the courier out of money and that is a dick move.

I've asked multiple times. Yet to get an answer.
