To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

I'm a bit Hmm at people saying Nandos, KFC, Wagamama etc

Did you really go to these places expecting to be wowed???

They're chains, I go expecting mass produced chain type food and nothing more!

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/11/2021 12:04

Nandos. Dry over cooked chicken and stick in your throat chips.

Another vote for miller and Carter..overpriced tiny portions of like warm food.

And then you risk getting an eyeful of some blokes arse cos they won't lock the door in the toilets 🤢

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/11/2021 12:04

Luke warm

Malibuismysecrethome · 19/11/2021 12:04

scbchi yes we found food at Cameron House awful to and we tried all of the restaurants

autumnvibes1 · 19/11/2021 12:04

@VitalsStable

The Ivy. Any of them.
Completely agree with this. Think its the name that's more of a status thing to eat there then the food itself
Shamoo · 19/11/2021 12:04

The Fat Duck. It was a good experience but the food was not actually very pleasant, and I would definitely never go back. So expensive and not even full at the end 😂

I live near a posh foodie village. I have not eaten at the premier restaurant there which costs £££ but at it's sister restaurant. Although the food was okay, my mashed potato was very lumpy. Perhaps it is trendy now ,alongside lukewarm food. It reminds me of the emporer's new clothes.

Do you live near me in Cumbria, if so it’s getting ridiculous even the local pubs are cashing in and charging £9.00 for soup!!!

@weegiemum

Rick Steins place in Padstow. I can cook fish better than that!
Yes, and it’s situated in a grotty part of the town.
BigSandyBalls2015 · 19/11/2021 12:06

I don't get the Five Guys hype at all. Just an over priced burger.

autumnvibes1 · 19/11/2021 12:06

@Aqua55

Nusr-Et. Very underwhelming.
Also I think this is another for reputation of the owner, rather than the food
Vroomed · 19/11/2021 12:06

Jamie Oliver in Stratford. Food was mediocre and the restaurant was tired looking with grubby metal tables and chairs reminiscent of a school dining hall.
Had the pleasure of food poisoning from this establishment. Never again.
StealingYourWiFi · 19/11/2021 12:06

Didn’t enjoy Hakkasan. On the contrary to others I LOVE The Ivy (tried original, Market grills, asia) and loved all of them. Stick with cocktails, starters and sides and can’t go wrong.

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/11/2021 12:07

Dishoom. Everyone and their granny raves about it but DH and I were very disappointed by it.

Dishoom has definitely been a victim of its own success. I recommend everyone to get the cookbook - it's excellent for the moderately adventurous home cook.

But when you go into the restaurant, especially the ones where space is at a premium, it feels very canteen-like. The staff don't have enough time to make anything feel personal and the tables are too small to facilitate family style eating. There's always a number of things on the menu that are off, and they're always the things that break up the meal. You end up with lots of chicken and prawn dishes because the big ticket lamb chops style items are off that day. Who doesn't get enough lamb chops in to cover a Saturday lunch?!

FriNightBlues · 19/11/2021 12:09

The River Cafe. Been twice: wildly overpriced and terrible service. Our waiter completely ignored us in favour of the table who were spending £££ on wine.

The food is acceptable but nothing more. God knows why folk rave about it.

(Wasn’t my choice to go back!)

tierneytarny · 19/11/2021 12:09

100% agree about The Ivy. I would go as far to say as some of the food we were served was inedible and had we not been with friends (who were raving about it), I would have sent it back to the kitchen.

I agree about Tattu too.....it was ok at best.

RedwineforSantaplease · 19/11/2021 12:09

One of the Marco Pierre White off shoots. Food was nice but atmosphere was awful.

Rick Stein's fish & chip place. Overrated and over priced.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/11/2021 12:09

@lastqueenofscotland

A friend of mine had an absolute stinker at la gavroche. Which given it cost several hundred pounds for two of them and the staff just implied they knew nothing about food when they complained.

There is a really meaty farm to table/local produce pub near me with an amazing rep. We went but did mention on booking that I was veggie, and if it would be a problem just say, I’d sit this meal out and the others would go.
£15 for a chilli that was obviously a ready meal from the CoOp down the road Angry

Ooh, me too. I mean, it was OK, but no better than our local bistro. I'm not fussed about posh restaurants, but DH is a foodie and it was supposed to be a treat for him, so I was really disappointed on his behalf.
ginslinger · 19/11/2021 12:09

Carluccios - but to be frank my expectations were low because most chain restaurants are characterised by the ping of the microwave for half of the dishes

beguilingeyes · 19/11/2021 12:09

@VitalsStable

The Ivy. Any of them.
The original Ivy in the West End used to be amazing...but they've really cheapened the brand now, I think..they're everywhere.
heidbuttsupper · 19/11/2021 12:11

The Dome Edinburgh

ichundich · 19/11/2021 12:11

The German Gymnasium in London Kings Cross, very pricey for average food. The food isn't even German, it's Bavarian.

ablutiions · 19/11/2021 12:11

@VitalsStable

The Ivy. Any of them.
Amen to this. Rubbish service. Awful food. Overpriced.
HeronLanyon · 19/11/2021 12:12

The Garrick Club but didn’t have expectations. Perfectly fine bland edible but not good.
Astonished to see cinnamon club mentioned above but haven’t been since before lockdown - always loved the food.
Pizza express. Memories of it being so different a long time ago. Perfectly ok but used to be quite good.
Margot - great James street. Not helped that it replaced one of my all time faves - Moti mahal - but I honestly think the food is very average.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 19/11/2021 12:13

Jamie Olivers restaurant in Brighton. It was filthy and the food was nothing to write home about.

grumpymummy72 · 19/11/2021 12:14

Agree with The Ivy (the original). Went I went there for a special occasion had to witness two waiters (quietly) arguing in front of us and both shepherd's pie and baked Alaska were massively disappointing.
