To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

Ping Pong, I’m not sure they have them outside London. Went as a teenager and thought it was amazing. Two occasions I’ve been back and it’s like microwaveable packet dim sum, and the char sui buns had barely any filling.

Just because you put it in a bamboo serving basket with a few leaves, it doesn’t make it good.

I also thought Betty's massively overrated. The sandwich's for afternoon tea were dry. It was nice enough but nothing special. However their takeaway bakery stuff is lovely.

Zizzi. Bland, watery pasta sauce, rude staff, would not go back

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/11/2021 11:45

Oh and Cinnamon Club (Vivek Singh's place). Terrible service, average food, it felt so tired. The staff seemed absolutely shocked that we tipped. Should've read the Tripadvisor before that one!

Microwaveableteapot · 19/11/2021 11:45

Agree, Tattu is pretty bad - the food would be OK if it was about half the price, it's not crap just not worth what they're charging. It's a place for instagrammers imo

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 19/11/2021 11:45

Jamie Oliver in Stratford. Food was mediocre and the restaurant was tired looking with grubby metal tables and chairs reminiscent of a school dining hall.

Practicebeingpatient · 19/11/2021 11:45

Gauchos. It's absolutely pitch black in there. I have perfect vision and had to use the torch on my phone to read the menu. I got lost going to the loo. The steaks are WAY overpriced for what they are. IMO they are also over salted (although TBF that's true in a lot of Argentinian restaurants). Worst of all, the wines aren't described by the grape variety, the region or even by flavour but by the name of the maker and the altitude of the vineyard. It's the most pretentious thing I've ever seen and completely unhelpful to any customer who doesn't have a detailed knowledge of Argentine terroirs

IslaInthesun · 19/11/2021 11:45

Jamie Oliver's was a total rip off for mediocre food.

Ramsey’s Hells Kitchen in Vegas

Practicebeingpatient · 19/11/2021 11:47

Further to my last post re Gaucho, I just googled it and the wine lists have changed now. Obviously I wasn't the only one frustrated by them.

DoubleHelix79 · 19/11/2021 11:50

The Ivy cafe in Wimbledon. Grumpy servers, slow, and underwhelming food.

Ramsey’s Hells Kitchen in Vegas
His Bread Street Kitchen was terrible too, though his Maze Grill was phenomenal. Terrible wait times though, we finally got seated 45 mins after our booking time. The food/wine was incredible though.
bluebell34567 · 19/11/2021 11:51

mostly disappointed.
and i dont understand how they get crowded.

Mrsweasleysclock · 19/11/2021 11:51

Benares, would not go ever again. Expensive and food is not great.

rooarsome · 19/11/2021 11:52

I took my children for afternoon tea at a wizarding themed place in Soho. It was positively raved about on social media but it was absolutely awful.
Tiny, dry and basic sandwiches. Shared 3 supermarket scones between 4. Crammed in (with a pram too) on a tiny 3 sided table. Dark, dirty and just terrible overall. I paid a fortune (in advance) for the privilege.

lastqueenofscotland · 19/11/2021 11:54

A friend of mine had an absolute stinker at la gavroche. Which given it cost several hundred pounds for two of them and the staff just implied they knew nothing about food when they complained.

There is a really meaty farm to table/local produce pub near me with an amazing rep. We went but did mention on booking that I was veggie, and if it would be a problem just say, I’d sit this meal out and the others would go.
£15 for a chilli that was obviously a ready meal from the CoOp down the road Angry

theelephantinthegroup · 19/11/2021 11:54

Can't remember the name of it, but in my younger days friends in London raved about an amazing Indian restaurant. Best curry you've ever eaten, fantastic Naan, delicious sides etc. Apparently this was not just a meal, it was an experience! They also operated a no booking policy, so no need to be too organised.

It was certainly an experience- on a Saturday evening we queued for 20 mins outside. Didn't seem too bad- but when we got inside we then had to queue again until a table was free, so we and many others were standing between tables of diners for about another half an hour. When the food arrived it was OK, but nothing special- and rather spoilt by having the arses of a group of queuing men pressed against the side of the table. I could have had an equally nice meal at my local curry house (without all the queuing) for about 1/3 of the price.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 19/11/2021 11:54

Yy to ping pong. When it first opened it was excellent but now it’s awful - cheap, bland , overpriced and the south bank one is disgustingly dirty 🤮

2boysDad · 19/11/2021 11:55

Another vote for Gaucho.

Style over substance. Overpriced mediocre food.

Spidey66 · 19/11/2021 11:55

Wagamama
Ok food but the experience reminded me of being in the dining hall at school

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/11/2021 11:55

Ox. Everyone I know raves about it but I found it a very expensive disappointment.

The Merchant Afternoon Tea. Samey, bland, boring and limited.

they do that dont they?

Grenlei · 19/11/2021 11:55

@ClaudiaWankleman

Jamie's Italian. For the sake of food I was glad it went out of business.
God yes - I had the most flavourless ever meal there, tasted like wallpaper paste (or baby rice!). I added loads of salt and pepper and it still tasted of nothing.

I went to the Criterion many years ago (late 90s) when Marco Pierre White was running it, and had a very expensive and horribly disappointing meal. Everyone raved about it, totally lost on me.

Theywalkamongstus · 19/11/2021 11:55

@FluffyBooBoo

A small Thai place in Edinburgh. I'm not going to name it, as it's an independent place. But I was told that it was the best Thai food they'd ever had, they totally raved about it. It was fine, but honestly not worth the money. Not much atmosphere, just a bit meh.

There are better and cheaper Thai places here.

Just off Hanover Street?
