To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?

Rick Steins was so utterly average except for the price.

Tomorrowisanewday · 19/11/2021 12:31

Hairbrush123 - not just you, no.

Below average food, hugely over-priced, and shockingly poor and rude service.

Martin Wishart?
The service there was awful, really snooty.[/quote]
Our Martin Wishart experience was badly let down, by being squeezed in at a table right next to the very smelly cheese cart! Restaurant was overcrowded and v noisy and food was totally unremarkable
The Kitchin on the other hand is amazing...been 3 times and just love the whole experience( from decor, to impeccable service) and the food is incredible

And L'Ortolan. Went when I was pregnant. Ordered the set menu which came with a glass of wine. They CHARGED us for my glass of wine because I'd given it to my husband and the deal was a glass of wine per person, not 2 glasses for 1 person.

That is shocking. I've eaten at L'Ortolan quite a bit over the years and I'm surprised at that. Did they refund it?

LemonKitten · 19/11/2021 12:33

I love Las Iguanas but I go to the Milton Keynes one.

I agree with Hard Rock Cafe and will add in Hooters - neither as great as their marketing thinks they are.

I don't get the love for Nandos - I've been a couple of times but it's nothing special.

Also, not a restaurant as such but Five Guys - who pays that much for a bog standard hamburger?

SpeakingFranglais · 19/11/2021 12:33

Gordon Ramsey at the Savoy Grill.

Just meh.

And the mille feuille tasted burnt

MadeleineMaxwell · 19/11/2021 12:33

Wagamama once served me chicken skewers that were pink in the middle. They brought me new ones but didn't even apologise for trying to kill me. Never been back since.

Yet another vote for The Ivy, I’m afraid. The one in Brighton, to be specific. It was busy and I was on my own so they sat me at the bar. Fair enough.

I ordered shepherds pie & water, because I was driving. The snotty foreign waiter very pointedly asked if that was all I wanted and looked disgusted when I said it was. I almost walked out, but I was pushed for time so I stayed. The food took ages to arrive, tasted average & the portion was tiny. Then they had the cheek to add a service charge to my bill. I refused to pay & told the manager why.

Lovecatsanddogs · 19/11/2021 12:34

San Lorenzo years ago. The food was really bland and my friend tripped over and fell onto Michael Winner.

Inthesameboatatmo · 19/11/2021 12:34

A warrel Thompson one .
Fucking awful.

@Shamoo

The Fat Duck. It was a good experience but the food was not actually very pleasant, and I would definitely never go back. So expensive and not even full at the end 😂
I loved the Fat Duck
SecondClassmyass · 19/11/2021 12:35

I call them ‘brothels with food’. Ya know, instagrammable decor, fake tits out spilling onto the plates, bodycon dresses, fancy cocktails, expensive food, waiters doing you a favour for serving you. Anywhere like this is a no no.

CatherineMaitland · 19/11/2021 12:35

I can't remember what it is called but it was a place in Osmotherley in the late 90s/very early 2000s, all wood tables and chairs. Gritty mush risotto and VERY expensive.

One in Porthgain in Wales in the late 2000s. The highlight was fish drenched in vinegar. You couldn't taste anything but the vinegar. And a pre-cooked lobster that was then heated up in sauce the evening "because we are just so busy."

Stopped reading reviews and started following my nose after that.

Flingingmelon · 19/11/2021 12:36

Dinner - overpriced nonsense for rich oligarchs. Not for the likes of me.

JumperandJacket · 19/11/2021 12:37

Another one here a bit underwhelmed by Le Gavroche. The food was fine, the service was fine, but no better. Given the two stars and the price, I'd expected something a bit more. Also disappointed that, when Michel Roux Jr came to chat to us, I just thought he was some random bloke as he (quite rightly) had a mask on and, by the time I realised, he'd moved onto the next table. Not his fault I was 2/3 of the way through the wine flight, to be fair.

On the other hand, I love the Ivy. Always so buzzy, the food is secondary. I even quite like an Ivy Caff.

TokyoSushi · 19/11/2021 12:37

Another no to Tattu here.

But The Ivy Asia in Manchester is my absolute favorite!

PlausibleSuit · 19/11/2021 12:38

@squashyhat Not trying to negate what TheTurn said but I've been to Northcote a couple of times, for special occasion meals, and really loved it. The Freemasons at Wiswell (which isn't too far away) is also excellent if you're in that area, as is the White Swan in Fence.

PicturesOfLily · 19/11/2021 12:38

@squashyhat I haven’t been for a few years but have eaten at Northcote a few times and it’s always been amazing. Dh and I got engaged there actually. We’ve been with a few different people and everyone has been impressed so hopefully the other poster just went on an off day 🤞🏻 We have been at lunchtime as there is usually a voucher on the website so it is excellent value.

The original Ivy - my best friend loved it as it was a celeb hang out but I didn’t like the food or the building!

Also Quaglinos which was another favourite of hers - found the food overrated too.

Both Gary Rhodes restaurants I visited (People’s Palace and the one in City forget name) i thought had great menus and atmosphere though.

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/11/2021 12:41

Oooh I'll add another. Waddesdon Manor.

Food didn't come out together. My risotto was not only cold probably due to being smeared thin on a plate as opposed to served in a bowl or smaller plate and it was crunchy. Not Al dente but actually crunchy.

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 19/11/2021 12:43

@WheelieBinPrincess

Ping Pong, I’m not sure they have them outside London. Went as a teenager and thought it was amazing. Two occasions I’ve been back and it’s like microwaveable packet dim sum, and the char sui buns had barely any filling.

Just because you put it in a bamboo serving basket with a few leaves, it doesn’t make it good.

Went there recently and it was DIRE. Even my kids were horrified at how poor the food was
KatherineJaneway · 19/11/2021 12:43

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. Terrible food and service.
