To ask what’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve eaten at?

I think for me, it’s a restaurant called “Tattu”. They’re dotted all around the UK and was so excited to try it but the food was so average yet they charge £100+ for two people based on a starter and main HmmConfused. Everyone who I know has been there absolutely loved it so maybe it’s just DP & I!

What’s the most overrated restaurant you’ve been to?
@Porridgeislife Le Peche Mignon looks tempting. I’ll take a diversion next time I’m nearby.
It’s wonderful. Honestly, I queued in the snow for 30 minutes during lockdown for their croissants!

Exhausteddog · 22/11/2021 13:10

The local nice gastro pub prides itself on them- but like a lot of places they mass cook everything early on in the day and reheated roast potatoes are NEVER going to taste the same as they did fresh

Agree. Roast potatoes are the main a major part of the roast dinner at our house. Its not unknown for DS to eat about 8.Blush He would sooner have seconds (and thirds) of roast potatoes than dessert.
According to both DC mine are better than DHs which I feel really smug about as he considers himself a far superior cook but I'm often disappointed in roast potatoes when we go for a pub Sunday lunch.

sansucre · 22/11/2021 16:40

@UniversalAunt Yes! Although Borough market is much easier for me to get to, I prefer that greengrocer. (I've also spotted Nigel Slater there quite a few times, and if it's good enough for him...)

CheltenhamLady · 23/11/2021 17:02

@Siriisatwat

The days of chatting to celebs in the Ladies are over.

@HundredMilesAnHour I once had a totally bizarre conversation with Geri Halliwell in the Ivy where she stopped me and said I looked just like someone she knew and would not stop going on about it, even trying to delve into my family tree as we MUST be related somehow 😂

Another Richard E Grant stepped on my little toe as he walked to his table and it felt like he broke it - he sent over a very expensive bottle of wine to my table to apologise.

And yes, the month long waiting lists! Those were good old days at the Ivy (still never rated the food much though).

The glory days of The Ivy in West St were fantastic. The food was never fine dining, but the atmosphere and the service were really good.

@Ghoulette
Completely agree with what you say. About Baby Buddah.
So overpriced for awful Chinese food!
We prefer The Royal Garden in Attleborough if you wanted to travel a bit out of the City.

PPCD · 25/11/2021 19:11

Inamo. Expensive, the food was average, difficult to use the electronic menu and the table game didn't work. We've had much better meals elsewhere in London.

Musmerian · 25/11/2021 19:13

@Dollywilde - we went to The Pig for DH’s parents anniversary. Terrible food. I had to send my steak back it was essentially raw. Hugely overpriced.

Musmerian · 25/11/2021 19:21

@weegiemum - when we went to Stein’s in Padstow I asked the waitress what she’d recommend. She said she wasn’t really a fan of fish - I kid you not. I had overcooked Dover Sole. Mega rip off.

Nayday · 25/11/2021 19:24

The Ivy London years ago when it was celeb heaven.

The food was so mediocre, I was massively disappointed. We purchased a tea towel though 😂

Sleepyquest · 25/11/2021 19:24

Completely agree @Ilovemycar77 so glad they have re opened
Didn't think I'd see that place mentioned on a mumsnet thread!

tarasmalatarocks · 25/11/2021 19:30

I confess to loving the Ivy - been to Bath and Richmond and had a lovely time at both of them— I like everything from the decor to the menu to the rather old school waiters — to be it feels posh but at mid price levels— although I give the shepherds pie a miss as mine is better! I also think wagamana do what they do really well - it’s a Japanese fast food chain ladies, not high cuisine and is reasonable— my vote goes to the Criterion many moons ago- expensive and average st best although a nice interior

Animum2 · 25/11/2021 19:49

Frankie and Bennys, I had heard people rave about it but I was unimpressed

Exhausteddog · 25/11/2021 19:56

Frankie and Bennys is pretty crap but I went with fairly low expectations so not overly disappointed.

TinyTickler · 25/11/2021 20:44

House of Tides. It was perfectly nice but nice isn't really good enough for a Michelin star.

Oh and I left starving.

LiJo2015 · 25/11/2021 21:00

The first indian restaurant in the uk in London, just off regent street I think. Boring food and ridiculously expensive.

Next - a posh restaurant in Paris - bill came to about £600 for 2 of us. The following night we found a lovely little restaurant which was a fraction of the cost and much nicer.

shinynewapple21 · 25/11/2021 21:22

Ooh @ColinTheKoala we are due to go to The Three Hares next week - I shall look forward to it .

shinynewapple21 · 25/11/2021 21:25

@MissDollyMix we had planned to visit The Star Inn next weekend but couldn't get a table - looks like we haven't missed anything then.

shinynewapple21 · 25/11/2021 21:27

@Boobahs

Won't mean much to non-locals, but I live near to Mad O'Rourkes pie factory which people around here rave about. I've been 4 times now and wasn't impressed with it.

Didn't realise that was still going! Used to go late 80s/early 90s

VestaTilley · 25/11/2021 21:30

The River Cafe.

I’ve had better food elsewhere, and while it was nice, it felt more pretentious than some of the more traditional, stuffy type places I’ve been to in town, and it was so overpriced for what we were served.

VestaTilley · 25/11/2021 21:43

I’d also second those who said Chiltern Firehouse - very overrated, and I agree completely The Ivy has ruined itself and cheapened its brand by having so many outposts now.

Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 21:43

Fifteen!
My ex took me as a birthday gift and they had just reopened, the food was tapas like but the fish took forever when all the other little dishes had turned up, I kept some food back to have with the fish and the staff were constantly, and I do mean constantly, trying to clear the table. I was so disappointed in the service and food.

Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 21:50

Oh and Rick steins cafe in Padstow, we couldn't go to the main restaurant because we had our children with us and under 2s are not allowed which is fine.

But I had high hopes for the cafe thinking it would be lovely local produce, fish dishes etc but it was a mish-mash of dishes and none so spectacular! Quite a disappointment really!

shinynewapple21 · 25/11/2021 21:51

@CrimbleCrumble1

Loche Fyne, me and DS were sick after going there.
Which one was that @CrimbleCrumble1 ?
Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 21:53

Roast at London Bridge isn't worth the money either

JumperandJacket · 25/11/2021 21:57

Oh yes, Fifteen was appalling. The only saving grace was that there was a solo diner on the next table, an American woman who kept leaning over to tell us that she was a very important restaurant reviewer there to write a review. She had a notebook that she kept writing in. Except she was very obviously not a restaurant reviewer, was absolutely blind drunk and, when we saw what was in the notebook, there wasn’t any writing at all, she had just drawn wiggly lines.
