Husbands sisters got her son to ask for a tablet

Like as though we're made out of money. Cos he's the uncle he'll get it. Our own kids don't have a tablet (no iPad or anything) both kids are aged 4 (her and mine)...I'm just so annoyed like AIBU? We're trying to save money. He works and I'm a stahm (baby is 8 months). I don't buy extravagant things...buy things dead cheap so that we can save for a deposit faster...whereas SIL spends her husbands cash here there and everywhere. Why can't they get their kid a tablet themselves?

If your SIL has told DN to ask you then she’s a cheeky fucker, but your husband is the issue here. If he’s too much of a wet wipe to say no have words, explain why your own children don’t have such extravagant things.

Why can't they get their kid a tablet themselves?
Ask them not MN.

Buy him a Leapfrog Mr Pencil tablet £25 and perfect for a four year old.

Globaluser · 17/11/2021 17:31

@AlleZusammen sil would love that!! 😂😂😂

SplodgeWaddler · 17/11/2021 17:32

How do you know that you SIL told your nephew to ask for one? To me it seems much more likely that he just wants one and is asking everybody - at 4 years old it’s hard to appreciate the cost of these things.

Sparklfairy · 17/11/2021 17:33

You could get this and called it "vintage" Wink

Gosh the coal is going to come as a nasty shock

BlackSwan · 17/11/2021 17:36

Not seriously suggesting you punish the child for his mother's rudeness...

2bazookas · 17/11/2021 17:36

Hes FOUR. Just say NO.

Uncle made a mistake, when he looked in the bank there wasn't enough money for a tablet.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/11/2021 17:36

I think I would have laughed and said 'good try'!

LoveComesQuickly · 17/11/2021 17:36

Agree - just say no!

Practicebeingpatient · 17/11/2021 17:38

My sister used to ask for very expensive gifts for her son. Not as expensive as a tablet and we could have afforded them if we wanted to but they were often more expensive than our presents for our own children,(giant lego kits and the like). I just used to say "sorry, that's way outside our price range'. I got a few snide comments about 'oh I didn't know you were on the breadline' and she stopped talking to me a couple of times but she got over herself eventually. I now send him a £20 Amazon card and everyone's happy.

Sofia82 · 17/11/2021 17:39

Say "what a great idea" and get this.

WonderfulYou · 17/11/2021 17:40

We never buy our nieces/nephews expensive presents like that else they’ll overshadow the parents presents.

Just tell him that’s something that he’ll have to ask his mum for.

Balonziaga · 17/11/2021 17:40

Don't be ridiculous
He is four
Your kids are four
None of them need tablets.

Your DH simply says 'no'. .

hopeishere · 17/11/2021 17:41

Just say no Confused

diddl · 17/11/2021 17:41

Well if no one else buys the tablet & they want him to have one then they'll have to buy it themselves.

You're not considering buying him one are you Op?

PinkSkirt · 17/11/2021 17:44

Fuck that. I like @Bwix suggestion of an etch a sketch.
Clearly the mum or dad have put them out to it

RedWingBoots · 17/11/2021 17:45

@AlleZusammen thanks for the link

Couchbettato · 17/11/2021 17:48

Tablets are the sort of things that parents should buy.

My 2 yo has a tablet but this was a joint decision by XH and I based on what we'd allow in terms of usage and how much money we were willing to part with.

We'd never impose this on relatives even if they were fabulously wealthy because it's about more than just how much it costs but the consequences of introducing screens to young children

MLMshouldbeillegal · 17/11/2021 17:48

You know the word you use when a four year old asks for a tablet?

No.

Quite simple.

SunshineCake1 · 17/11/2021 17:48

Don't buy it then. You don't have to. You can't go along with her sneery game the. complain about it.

LowlandLucky · 17/11/2021 17:52

If my DH bought his nephew something that we couldn't afford for our own children his bags would be packed.

itsallgoingpearshaped · 17/11/2021 17:57

'You'll have to put it in your letter to Santa,' with a smile.

And then your DH should privately let his sister have an earful.

Tulipomania · 17/11/2021 17:58

People buy tablets for four year olds????

WOW!!!
