Was I wrong to tell hairdresser the truth ? Pic*

I have been going to a new hair salon since the summer so this was visit 4/5…

I have lovely long thick hair and I’m quite specific and clear about what I want, more so over the fringe as I’ve had bad ones in the past. The hairdresser has cut my hair on two previous occasions with no issues but today in my eyes she butchered it and my British politeness evaded me when I looked in the mirror…

She asked if I liked it … I have a sharp No!
She asked why don’t you like it ? I explained that it was wonky, above the eyebrow when I specifically said I wanted it just below and the thinning had given different thickness throughout … the hairdresser was clearly shocked I said no and said ‘ I’ve seen lots of fringes and this is fine ‘

The manager also sided with her, I paid and left ( £90) for the colour cut and blow dry. A few mins after leaving the salon calls me and I ignore as I’m raging at this point on my phone to my friend and then a mobile number calls me and it’s the manager calling off her phone to tell me off for leaving a 1 star on Treatwell… is that even allowed ?

She asked me to remove the one and said giggling ‘ we really don’t deserve the one ‘ I said I deserved a decent cut . She said she didn’t know how I felt about it I pointed out she was there the whole time standing and I paid her and spoke about it at the end … she said what do you want to be happy ? I’ll give you discount or free £15 treatment next time…. Next time ?! Hell no!

I made a excuse to get off the line but I did leave a google review and a photo.

Was I wrong to be not typically British politeness and straight up say NO when asked if I liked it … ? What is your opinion on that fringe cut ? For context it was just below my eyebrows , even and the same thickness when I went in

Ah right well maybe in the future you should take a photo to show what you want, even if it was your last cut, because otherwise you are relying on their interpretation of what you're describing. If you've shown a photo it is pretty clear what you want.

lovemelongtime · 16/11/2021 12:27

That's awful and their treatment of you is even worse. I had a bit of a poor but last week at my usual haridressers - called him a couple of days later and said I wasnt happy - immediately got a slot later that day and he sorted it. Surely they want to keep customers but I also think as the customer we should always give them the opportunity to put it right. Clearly I wouldnt be going back there again.

brightgreenapple · 16/11/2021 12:30

I'm a hairdresser and believe you have perfect reason to behave how you did. Obviously I wasn't there during consultation so the problem
I believe is the miscommunication about your expectation and what she understood to be your requirements. Your fringe has been thinned to within an inch of its life and will be a nightmare to manage.

ImJustADaddy · 16/11/2021 12:44

name and shame them

armslength · 16/11/2021 12:45

Did they thin your fringe as well? You say you have thick hair and a thin feathery fringe like this would look wrong in any case. You are right to have responded that way. You weren't happy with the service you were provided with end of.

I've thankfully never had a awful experience with hairdressers but this summer a beautician ruined my eyebrows. Despite telling her a million times just to tidy it up around the edges and make sure she doesn't go in at all as I don't want thin eyebrows. Mind you I'm 5'10 and have a heart shaped face with wide cheeks and probably a bigger head compared to average and guess what, I opened my eyes with very thin eyebrows. It's taken 4 months for it to look a bit ok and I also left a 1* and complained at the spot because it's not what I wanted. In your case you have to also live with the fringe until it grows so you are right to respond that way.

Coffeepot72 · 16/11/2021 12:48

I think it looks ok, however it’s not my hair. You were right to complain.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/11/2021 13:09

Trouble with hair cuts is that the hairdresser basically gets one go. It’s not like colour which can be redone. For that reason they should have a decent response ready for customers who don’t like it - offer money off, discount next time, free treatment, whatever it is. They should be focused on enticing you back!

ShaneTheThird · 16/11/2021 13:16

Yep that's a shoddy cut alright. You were absolutely correct to complain I have no idea how anyone can accuse you of being wrong for that. They should have offered a discount straight away. I would have refused to pay full price and I certainly would be putting bad reviews up. It's hilarious how a poster on here is complaining you might ruin their business with your one star review Grin

Knittedfairies · 16/11/2021 13:17

Is the hairdresser a member of the National Hair and Beauty Federation, or another trade body?

whynotwhatknot · 16/11/2021 13:33

whats the point of a review site if they just remove it hope they contact you about that its ridiculous

Notjustanymum · 16/11/2021 13:42

That you, Claudia?

RonSwansonsChair · 16/11/2021 13:51

It looks like a 5yr old got hold of the scissors and took a chunk out of your fringe - sorry OP!
Yanbu to complain, they abu to laughAngry

sunglassesonthetable · 16/11/2021 13:53

The fringe is fine. You could have literally sorted it with your fingers. You were being unreasonable to be stroppy about it, to give a one star review which could damage their business and to refuse her offer to make it up to you. And rude, in my opinion. I´d not have behaved like that.

You didn't pay for it though did you?

could damage their business- err I think they did that all on their own.

Remember OP was already a repeat customer. People stick with hairstylists who listen and give them what they want and give them ongoing business.

Well done you OP. You did that for all of us who lamely say "yes it's fine" and then leave RAGING that they've also had to pay for something they hate.

If you know you know.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/11/2021 14:04

Yikes.

I have fine hair and a have a fringe which looks thicker than this. They've definitely fucked it up.

That said, if you've been 4 times in total and had one bad experience, I wouldn't leave a 1 star review. I would have asked for a discount before paying and for them to repair the fringe once it grew back in in a couple of weeks.
I'm a firm believer in giving people a chance to fix problems before giving them negative reviews. That said, you say the manager was aware you weren't happy and didn't do anything to show that she was even bothered. I probably would have emailed in with my complaint to see what they would offer and only if they had then been rude or dismissive, I would have left a fair review online.

GreyGoose1980 · 16/11/2021 14:14

It’s too thin in the middle and too short. YANBU.

IslaInthesun · 16/11/2021 15:19

It looks awful. My mum used to do a better job with the kitchen scissors in the 80s

I would update the review to say you've noticed the cut is a cm off too now.

Jaxhog · 16/11/2021 15:23

While a one-star is maybe an overreaction, you are entitled to say what you think. It isn't as if you left without telling them you didn't like it.

itsallgoingpearshaped · 16/11/2021 16:23

@Brighton5555

No I didn’t show a photo to them. She has cut my hair a few times before and I’m always always very clear about what I want . I said below the eyebrows … it’s gets worse as today ive now realised they haven’t cut the rest of my hair the same length one side is about 1cm shorter than the other 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
Wow! I'd post a pic of that as well if you can add to the review. Sounds like the person who cut your hair really wasn't paying any kind of attention!
rwalker · 16/11/2021 17:02

Looks like the picture has been done to make it look as bad as possible.

😮😮 Yes your so right ! I sat in my car straight after and rather than take a natural photo to see if it still looked as horrific as in the salon mirror i actually spent a hour working the camera angle to make sure it looked as wonky and as messed up as possible ….

Don’t tell anyone else but I actually used a special vanishing filter to make it appear as thinned out as possible ….. 😵‍💫

You know exactly what I meant .

lindyloo57 · 16/11/2021 17:34

It's happen to me, I never had the guts to say anything good for you, I had half head of highlights this August with a new hairdresser, I showed her some photos of the colour i like, I haven't been to the hairdressers since January 2020, so my light were growing out quite a bit, but I did a few lights myself in along the top a couple of time, I took a photo before I went , I always do this to compare how it looks after having my hair done, and when I got home my husband said did you have it done, not what you want to here when I just spent £50 I didn't have it cut. The lights were two dark and you can hardly see them, so on the search for a new hairdresser.

millievanillaice · 16/11/2021 17:39

It looks like my mum did 😂

But it will grow back in a few weeks

angela99999 · 16/11/2021 17:42

I hate having a fringe above my eyebrows too and can quite understand why you were upset. I think you were very gutsy to tell her you didn't like it and they deserve the one star.

Diva66 · 16/11/2021 17:59

It looks a mess, hope it grows quickly.

lindyloo57 · 16/11/2021 18:02

In a couple of weeks it be fine x

Dnaltocs · 16/11/2021 18:03

It’s fashionably cut.

There’s no pleasing some folk.
A longer fringe would cast a shadow looking like wrinkles. Thereby ageing you.

I thought it looked great.
The hairdresser will most probably be really upset and your fringe is fine.
