Was I wrong to tell hairdresser the truth ? Pic*

I have been going to a new hair salon since the summer so this was visit 4/5…

I have lovely long thick hair and I’m quite specific and clear about what I want, more so over the fringe as I’ve had bad ones in the past. The hairdresser has cut my hair on two previous occasions with no issues but today in my eyes she butchered it and my British politeness evaded me when I looked in the mirror…

She asked if I liked it … I have a sharp No!
She asked why don’t you like it ? I explained that it was wonky, above the eyebrow when I specifically said I wanted it just below and the thinning had given different thickness throughout … the hairdresser was clearly shocked I said no and said ‘ I’ve seen lots of fringes and this is fine ‘

The manager also sided with her, I paid and left ( £90) for the colour cut and blow dry. A few mins after leaving the salon calls me and I ignore as I’m raging at this point on my phone to my friend and then a mobile number calls me and it’s the manager calling off her phone to tell me off for leaving a 1 star on Treatwell… is that even allowed ?

She asked me to remove the one and said giggling ‘ we really don’t deserve the one ‘ I said I deserved a decent cut . She said she didn’t know how I felt about it I pointed out she was there the whole time standing and I paid her and spoke about it at the end … she said what do you want to be happy ? I’ll give you discount or free £15 treatment next time…. Next time ?! Hell no!

I made a excuse to get off the line but I did leave a google review and a photo.

Was I wrong to be not typically British politeness and straight up say NO when asked if I liked it … ? What is your opinion on that fringe cut ? For context it was just below my eyebrows , even and the same thickness when I went in

Isn't that what reviews are for? Id be fuming too op... its really not about discount or not having too pay full price its about a dodgy cut

KindChick · 15/11/2021 20:21

I also have a fringe, it’s thick and falls just below my eyebrows.
My hairdresser absolutely knows how I like it cut and literally cuts a tiny amount from it, checks with me and then maybe a bit more. I would say that approach is standard for most hairdressers as opposed to hacking the fringe to death and then asking if you like it.
You did well saying you didn’t like it. The managers behaviour is absolutely disgusting.

lunar1 · 15/11/2021 20:22

I have the fringe you requested, I'd be upset too if they did this!

Chickychoccyegg · 15/11/2021 20:22

I think you were clear what you wanted, they never did that, didn't seem apologetic or try and do anything helpful at the time, so they deserve their 1 star review and a firm NO, and to phone you like that is so unprofessional

Arrowheart · 15/11/2021 20:22

It looks like it has been thinned out too much and it reminds me of mine when I cut my own fringe in (not a good look!). It's like it can't decide whether it wants to be a fringe or not.

Moonface123 · 15/11/2021 20:23

YANBU.

I wouldnt have been happy with fringe either, at least you can grow it out, but beside the point.
l complained about the colour they put on my hair, it turned out way too red/ coppery. Whilst they were trying to correct it, l could see my hairdresser rolling her eyes in the mirror, and when l later said l still didnt like it, she walked off in a hissy fit. I was made to feel very uncomfortable throughout.
l colour my own hair now and have finally got it how l like.
I dont think they are used to negative feedback because we feel we should just be polite and go along with it.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 15/11/2021 20:25

I dont think its wonky. I do think its too thin though.

I recently got rid of my fringe after a year of having it - I just cant be bothered with the admin of it

ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 20:25

Its hair, it will grow...
On the plus side, if it's shorter than you;d like, it will take longer before it needs cutting - longer to find a new hairdresser.

DameMaureen · 15/11/2021 20:27

It looks like a razor cut fringe but one that has gone badly wrong with the thin bit in the middle . Your hair looks quite fine and I suspect if you wash it when you go home it won't look quite as bad as it looks like it has been pouffed up too with a blow-dry ? You were 100% right in telling them you were unhappy . Find a hairdresser who will listen to what you say .

BungleandGeorge · 15/11/2021 20:27

It’s a really poor cut. You’ve done prospective clients a favour by warning them!

DiamondBright · 15/11/2021 20:28

I don't think they're used to being told no, people generally leave and just don't go back.

A few years ago I went to my usual salon to have my hair curled for a night out, not something I do very often but I needed a bit of pampering. Anyway, they put me with a junior stylist who faffed about for an age with rollers, blow drying, back combing etc. I wasn't impressed with how long it took or the results, but paid and left, I went to a department store nearby and checked it out in the loo and it was ok, but already dropping out, could have done it as well myself. I braced myself and went back, and they were brilliant, if dramatic, the junior was sent to do something in the back out of the way, the manager took over a colour application so my usual hairdresser could do my hair, took her 20 minutes to sort it out, I got a refund and some products as an apology.

Aderyn21 · 15/11/2021 20:28

I’d complain about my review being removed. Surely the purpose of reviews is to garner all customers opinions, not just the positive ones.
You were right to complain - they’ve butchered your fringe.

Skysblue · 15/11/2021 20:28

I agree with you OP tbh, I don’t think it looks right and if you specifically said below eyebrows then there is noe xxuse for doing it above. When you said you didn’t like it and why they should have apologised and waived the fee imo.

Fair enough to leave a bad review if they didn’t do what you hired then to do and then made you pay for it.

Some people will say bad reviews are mean. I’ve had a couple myself and yes they hurt! But I’ve also had far more occasions where I hired a builder / plumber etc with great reviews and it turns out they’re awful but no one bothered to leave (or were paid to remove) bad reviews).

Don’t want a bad review? Do the job properly the first time.
I’m fed up of

Mummyratbag · 15/11/2021 20:30

I wonder how many bad reviews she has "bought off"

WickedWitchOfTheTrent · 15/11/2021 20:31

I'd update my review (if you can) and mention that the owner had rung and what shes said. That's awful behaviour.

As for the cut, you can't change it but I would have asked for a discount

DameMaureen · 15/11/2021 20:32

Sometimes this kind of fringe can be cool and hip but if it's not what you are after then it's a NO.

ShagMeRiggins · 15/11/2021 20:34

You didn't like the cut. They told you you were wrong to dislike it. On those gaslit grounds alone I would be furious.

Yup. Don’t tell me my own opinion on my hair.

There was nothing to be done but discount or refund the cut and have you pay only for colour. I don’t know if you’d have gone back, but I bet you wouldn’t have left a 1 star review.

They really weren’t thinking ahead, were they?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/11/2021 20:34

I have a really blunt, precise, short fringe, and my hairdresser must get sick of me fussing about with it - however, he owns the salon and wants me to be a happy customer, so he is great at fiddling around until I am 100% satisfied. If he wasn’t I would never go back. I am always astonished at threads on here where people say “oh lovely” and walk out hating their hair. Well done, OP.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 15/11/2021 20:36

Sorry it doesn’t look good. You were right to leave the review.

Lulu1919 · 15/11/2021 20:36

It's very 'thin'

MsFogi · 15/11/2021 20:39

Good for you OP - too many businesses rely on British politeness to get away with doing a rubbish job.

Bringonsummer19 · 15/11/2021 20:39

We really need to be better at ‘saying no and then not feeling guilty about saying no’

I’m with you OP, you did the right thing saying No. if they had taken your thoughts seriously rather than dismissing you I’m sure you wouldn’t have left the review

videovixen · 15/11/2021 20:39

Nothing wrong with being truthful!
So many people complain about a service once they've already left the shop because they didn't speak up at the time. You complained and gave feedback about the cut and left a honest review. Not sure why the manager's calling you about the one star, the cheek

Lightswitch123 · 15/11/2021 20:40

@Snoopfroggyfrogg

They've got an absolute cheek trying to.offer you a discount for a 1* review AFTER you'd expressed dissatisfaction and they made you pay in full. You did the right thing in explaining you weren't satisfied. What was the point her asking if she had no intention of either amending it (not really possible with a too short fringe) or compensating you (discount etc).
Exactly this!

Plus they tried to persuade you that it was OK . I hate it when people do that.

Well done OP for standing your ground

CovidCorvid · 15/11/2021 20:43

@0blio

It doesn't look great, sorry and I don't understand why hairdressers always want to thin out fringes until they're really wispy? It's the only part of my hair I like blunt cut and I have to remind my hairdresser every time.
I agree. My hairdresser never cut it blunt enough or short enough no matter how much I nagged. Thankfully lock down meant I got brave with the scissors and discovered I do a better job than the hairdresser so never let her do the fringe now!
