Was I wrong to tell hairdresser the truth ? Pic*

I have been going to a new hair salon since the summer so this was visit 4/5…

I have lovely long thick hair and I’m quite specific and clear about what I want, more so over the fringe as I’ve had bad ones in the past. The hairdresser has cut my hair on two previous occasions with no issues but today in my eyes she butchered it and my British politeness evaded me when I looked in the mirror…

She asked if I liked it … I have a sharp No!
She asked why don’t you like it ? I explained that it was wonky, above the eyebrow when I specifically said I wanted it just below and the thinning had given different thickness throughout … the hairdresser was clearly shocked I said no and said ‘ I’ve seen lots of fringes and this is fine ‘

The manager also sided with her, I paid and left ( £90) for the colour cut and blow dry. A few mins after leaving the salon calls me and I ignore as I’m raging at this point on my phone to my friend and then a mobile number calls me and it’s the manager calling off her phone to tell me off for leaving a 1 star on Treatwell… is that even allowed ?

She asked me to remove the one and said giggling ‘ we really don’t deserve the one ‘ I said I deserved a decent cut . She said she didn’t know how I felt about it I pointed out she was there the whole time standing and I paid her and spoke about it at the end … she said what do you want to be happy ? I’ll give you discount or free £15 treatment next time…. Next time ?! Hell no!

I made a excuse to get off the line but I did leave a google review and a photo.

Was I wrong to be not typically British politeness and straight up say NO when asked if I liked it … ? What is your opinion on that fringe cut ? For context it was just below my eyebrows , even and the same thickness when I went in

Yeah the fringe isn't great... on the plus side, it should grow out fast. Sounds like the poor review was deserved so they'll just have to suck it up.

stayathomer · 15/11/2021 22:02

I think the most unreasonable part was her phone call. How did she think it was okay to ask you to remove a review?!

Merrilee · 15/11/2021 22:02

Do you have a very recent before pic for comparison?

Hellotoallmyfans · 15/11/2021 22:04

I'm shocked they made you pay. My hairdressers would never make a customer pay if they were unhappy. They would try to rectify the situation and if not, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't take the money.

@Poetrypatty

I'm getting my hair cut on Friday, it's thick and chin length and my hairdresser insists I have a 4 weekly appointment even though its not grown out, she books me three appointments ahead, I'm too cowardly to argue, she always goes too short and thins it out too much even though I tell her not too plus it costs me £95. Shock

Change hairdressers surely? Or say you'll phone up and book when you have your diary to hand, then book them only as frequently as you want.

Huh? You are scared of your hairdresser? Ffs just cancel this Fridays appointment and change all bookings for 6 or 8 weeks. Why would you be too scared?

@Jayaywhynot

As the recipient of lots of dodgy haircuts, which in my britishness I always say "thank you, I love it" and promptly burst into tears when I get home, I applaud you OP, they royally fucked up your fringe and deserve their one star. Well done for not backing down. Youve inspired me to stand up for myself
Stop going back there! Just call up and cancel the appointments.
Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 15/11/2021 22:15

No of course you weren’t wrong. I would also be very angry that the review vanished.

HalfBrick · 15/11/2021 22:23

Good for you, that fringe is exactly what I fear when I get mine cut, as a pp said why are hairdressers obsessed with thinning fringes? Its neither here nor there. Clip it to the side for a week and it'll be longer before you know it (speaking from experience).

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 15/11/2021 22:44

You are not being unreasonable to be pissed off. It’s your hair. You’ve seen it at its best. And now its not so best. Especially annoying if you know it’s capable of so much more. Even more annoying if it’s the same hairdresser!! However, if you’ve been 4-5 times since summer maybe they’ve run out of bits to snip??? Sulk a bit. Stick a grip in it. Don’t return. The trust has gone. It’ll soon grow. Shop around for a new hairdresser - yes that is hell! I feel your pain there 😒

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 15/11/2021 22:46

Ps. I beg for more snippy snippy thinning! They’re usually reluctant. Yours really seems at home with it!

supersop60 · 15/11/2021 22:47

I think your fringe looks fine. However, if you were not happy and it's not what you asked for you are absolutely NBU to say so.

ChequeredHistory · 15/11/2021 23:15

she said what do you want to be happy ?

Well other than gluing the hair she cut off back on and then cutting it how you asked her to cut it, that’s a hard question to answer.

moonriverandme · 15/11/2021 23:21

I wouldn't be happy with that fringe. It looks like I've done it for you.🙄😏

LovePoppy · 15/11/2021 23:23

@sunshine11

It's hair. It will grow back. Lesson learned to be more specific with hairdresser. Now grow up.
She was specific though
ifIwerenotanandroid · 15/11/2021 23:24

I've learnt to cut my own fringe since lockdown, & even I can see what's wrong with that cut & what the hairdresser did to make it like that (because the mistake on one side is what I used to do to myself when I first started!). No professional should've done that or defended it.

rwalker · 15/11/2021 23:26

Looks like the picture has been done to make it look as bad as possible.

There's no need to be patronising & offensive.

OP was specific, including just before the stylist cut the fringe. I had the same once: I always saw the same stylist, she knew exactly what I wanted as it was the same every time. She began with the usual, "What would you like today?" & I said what I wanted done; just before she was due to trim the bottom of my long hair I checked again that we were in agreement & apparently we were. She then did the exact opposite & layered my hair all the way down instead of just trimming it!

There's no explanation for it, other than that her mind was elsewhere. Some days you just can't win.

LaurenKelsey · 15/11/2021 23:52

She cut it too short and thinned it too much, obviously. In a couple weeks it will be much better.

I wish I had lovely hair but I never will. Although mine is a nice colour, it is fine and wispy, won’t curl or keep any style. Your fringe is like my entire head. 🤷‍♀️

My DD is exactly like you, very straightforward with service providers. She was even like that as a small child. You’re not wrong, but at least it will be temporary. Keep the one star though.

QueeniesCroft · 16/11/2021 00:23

It doesn't look great, but well done at least for telling her you weren't happy. I haven't been to a hairdresser for 19 years, after I came out with a 1 inch-long fringe and looking like a medieval peasant! I said nothing, but to be fair the hairdresser didn't ask, she just hurriedly told me that she didn't have time to blow dry my hair and almost shoved me out of the door.

Rangoon · 16/11/2021 00:27

I agree that it was a l star fringe. I am not English and I find English people's behaviour quite odd in not complaining about bad service. Sometimes it is possible to put things right if you speak up early enough though obviously not in this case. I was once left in the care of a pair of juniors who were told to apply tint and comb through to even up the ends. The pair of them started to apply tint with ordinary combs and not a tint brush. This was one process colour to cover grey and not balyage in any way shape or form. I told them it was obvious that neither of them had any idea what they were doing and that they should stop and find somebody who did. They did and I refused to have either of them touch my hair again.

I have had my hairdresser for quite a while and only change if they leave town! When I did have to find a new hairdresser, I would go for some minor thing like a trim - I have very long hair. I would be keeping a close eye on how the salon was run - the tidiness and whether the manager/owner was visible and on the premises. If I overheard any backbiting gossip, dirtiness, or saw bad technique they were off my list. I had a good look at any clients leaving as well to see the standard of their work. It doesn't really matter how glossy or upmarket the place looks either as once in my naive youth I emerged from one of those places looking like a tabby cat.

backtolifebacktoreality · 16/11/2021 00:35

Have you got a photo of what your fringe was like before she cut it that shows what you could expect from a trim?

Peach01 · 16/11/2021 00:51

Unless you asked for a short, wispy, hair broken off with straighteners-esque fringe then YANBU.

BookFiend4Life · 16/11/2021 01:02

I'm impressed by you tbh! I can never bring myself to speak up. I don't think ybu if it's not what you wanted. It will grow quickly, it should look pretty good in 2ish weeks and in a month you can get it cut by someone else to be the way you want it. Going forward I would always always use a picture, then if they mess up you can show them the difference.

RockNRollMartian · 16/11/2021 01:26

Why do they even ask if you're happy with the cut if a less than pleased response is met with shocked disbelief?

notangelinajolie · 16/11/2021 01:27

YABU I don't think your hair is as thick as you think it is.
