Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

The only lanyard I wear at work is made by the company and has a till key on it. There is no advantage to people knowing I work for a pub company, doesn't give me discounts or get me served alcohol without ID. So the only reason I'm wearing it is because I just haven't bothered to take it off, same as the apron I wear with the pub name on it and I imagine it's the same with people who have an ID card attached to their lanyards.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/11/2021 18:51

@Hapoydayz

I noticed at my work that it was mainly the men that still had theirs on in the pub after work.
Nice to know that the women are food shopping and the men are drinking.

Swapsies please.

herestoyoucolinrobinson · 15/11/2021 18:51

It's a disciplinary offence at my job too. They've started stopping people on the way out to make they'll put their pass away.

bananabuddy3 · 15/11/2021 18:53

I just don’t think about it - it’s round my neck all day so I’m used to it being there and often do my supermarket shopping on the way home so it just stays put out of habit. Nothing jogs me to think “take lanyard off” until I get home.
I use it to exit my work place and sign out. By that point my hands are normally full so another reason why it just stays put.

Lots of people go shopping with a work uniform or a name badge on too. Why not?

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/11/2021 18:53

OP fucked off?

Colour me stunned.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/11/2021 18:54

I rarely take a bag if I'm just going in for one or two things so I wear my lanyard as I've nowhere to put it.

mam0918 · 15/11/2021 18:54

do they all work for 'sunflower' by any chance? lol

I can honestly say I have never noticed anyone wandering around with lanyards on except the occasional sunflower one and to be honest I only noticed that due to their lack of mask usage.

Why are you casing people work via lanyards OP?

saraclara · 15/11/2021 18:54

I used to have a lanyard. It lived either around my neck, or on the hall table. Nowhere else, because otherwise I'd lose it.

So if I went to the shop after work, I'd be wearing it. I assumed that no-one would care enough to want to know what it said, and losing it would have been a huge pain in the neck, and I'd have got into trouble. LIkewise if I kept it in my bag and took the 'wrong' bag to work I'd also have a problem.
So neck or hall table rule.

galacticpixels · 15/11/2021 18:54

I sometimes forget to take it off to be honest. Especially if it's just attached to my jeans and not hanging around my neck.

My work-issued laptop bag has my company name on it so people can already easily know where I work...

ThirdElephant · 15/11/2021 18:55

@MrsTerryPratchett

OP fucked off?

BruiserWoods · 15/11/2021 18:57

That would be me i guess. I dont want to lose it.

Also, it's a proactive decision to take it off and put it away, not doing anything with it is easier, like, default.

So why take it off is the question really.

853ax · 15/11/2021 18:58

Some workplaces need wear around neck so can be visible to security when walking around. Expect people then leave them on when in shops ect around work time. Especially now that can pay with watch or phone people may not have pocket or bags

Snoozer11 · 15/11/2021 18:58

I once went to an away day, where we were all out of office and worked in various different companies. It wasn't a networking event.

Someone turned up wearing her PwC lanyard, despite the fact we weren't anywhere near her office.

expatmigrant · 15/11/2021 18:58

Just came home from work...via the supermarket...plonked myself down after a busy day working in the NHS...and low and behold...I look down and AM STILL WEARING that damned lanyard Grin

LucilleBluth · 15/11/2021 18:59

Mine gets me through doors in the building and goes in a certain place near the front door. I need a routine with mine or I’ll loose it.

The thought of wearing it when I pop in the shop after work and someone judging me never ever occurred to me.

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 19:00

In the grand scheme of things who gives a jot about a visible lanyard. Far more important things going on, I think that’s half the problem in this country.

Cas112 · 15/11/2021 19:01

Because people wear them all day at work and forget to take them off or don't see the need to, it's not harming anyone 😂

What kind of ridiculous question is this

And FYI when I used to wear one not me as as female or my MALE colleagues took them off, so it's nothing to do with being a woman or a man or any gender

Redcrayons · 15/11/2021 19:02

Mine lives around my neck or on the hook with my car keys. I don’t want to start fishing through coat pockets and bags to find it in the morning.
I don’t care if people know where I work.
I am ‘Of a certain age’.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 15/11/2021 19:03

I wasn't supposed to wear my lanyard outside of work for security reasons. but sometimes a 12 hour stressful day after which you still need to go food shopping means you forget some things.

Zwellers · 15/11/2021 19:04

Why do you care. Seriously. Do you go around reading them so you can report them to thuer place of work or something.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/11/2021 19:04

it is not a certain age,
students need to wear them, i think, to access college/uni
they are not my age

seb342 · 15/11/2021 19:06

Unless they are advertising they work for the secret service I don't see the problem here. Are you jealous because you don't have a lanyard in your job OP? Trying to understand why this would bother you.

reluctantbrit · 15/11/2021 19:06

My lanyard was the best toy to entertain DD in the supermarket on the way home from nursery, especially when she was teething.

I had to replace a number of cardholders and in the end just got handed a stack from the stationary department to stop me bothering them.

ChequeredHistory · 15/11/2021 19:07

mainly women of a certain age

It's because their lanyards are steeped in HRT and can be clutched, along with the pearls obvs, when attempting to use difficult technology like tills and exits.

I’ve retired but my lanyard was infused with oestrogen so if I removed it I had instant hot flushes and attempted to murder my colleagues.

ImmortalCandle · 15/11/2021 19:07

Because they have the ke y s to the workplace and it is a massive deal if they get lost. Mor elderly if in a bag and the bag gets nicked, they drop out etc. Put on when leaving house, put in safe place when home, rinse and repeat. Security risk, innit.
