Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

OP posts:
ImmortalCandle · 15/11/2021 19:09

Mine doesn't have I'd. It's literally keys, pen and hand sanitizer. When out without it, and even at home, I quite often reach for my pen......

pictish · 15/11/2021 19:09

Another one who forgets to take mine off sometimes.
So yeah…that’s why.

Horriblehalloween · 15/11/2021 19:09

I wouldn’t even think to take mine off. I leave work, nip into a shop around 300m away, get into my car and drive home. It wouldn’t even occur to me to remove it.

Campfirewood · 15/11/2021 19:10

I hang my keys off mine sometimes, so wear it as I rarely have pockets!

TeeBee · 15/11/2021 19:11

Probably because they're distracted by getting on with their lives rather than taking time to judge others.

Practicebeingpatient · 15/11/2021 19:11

In answer to your question OP - yes. You do seem to be the only person who finds this odd.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 15/11/2021 19:11

I wear mine so all the young children who run up to me to say hello and often grab various parts of my body can be identified as pupils of the school where I work and I am not some predator!!!

Changethetoner · 15/11/2021 19:12

OP do you have to wear a lanyard at work? Just wondering if you are somehow looking down on people who have to? Would you like to have to wear a name badge? Or is there any particular other reason you are so bothered by this non-issue?

ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 19:12

I'm distraught - woman of a certain age and a job with no Lanyard Shock.
I compensate by having my travelcard on a lanyard (but attached inside my bag)
When I did have a lanyard Envy, whether or not I wore it home or put it in my bag largely depended on which office I was working in
High security one where you needed the pass to get out of the building, I wore it home - too much faff to remove my backpack once I was outside and stow the pass away.
Laid back office where pass not needed to leave - would be packed inside my bag before I left the office.

I find it amusing where you see people that have been at conferences that still have giant name badges on - that is weird!

BTW pseuds corner alert the lanyard is only the cord, not the pass with your name/company logo on,

claymodels · 15/11/2021 19:13

Because I would have lost it if I took it off. I'm autistic and suffer from executive dysfunction. Keeping things safe when I am out is paramount. the lanyard was one of the easiest things as I didn't need to take it off, so it was always with me.

SpangoDweller · 15/11/2021 19:13

@MrsTerryPratchett

Because I forget.

I once got a discount I didn't know about because of it though!

This is why I wear mine as often as possible 😃
SilverThread · 15/11/2021 19:14

Bloody women of a certain age comment.!!!!

MissMogwai · 15/11/2021 19:14

@malmi

Think of the specific reason why you take yours off.

Then imagine you simply don't care about that.

Now you know.

Grin love it!
Muminabun · 15/11/2021 19:14

Op I am a woman of a certain age I frequently walk into rooms and have no idea why I went in there. I also don’t give a shiny shit and have peri menopausal rage so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

SilverThread · 15/11/2021 19:15

But where I worked you had to take it off, and hide it, outside of work, as it was secret squirrel stuff we did 😊

independentfriend · 15/11/2021 19:17

They're ignoring/don't know good personal security advice.

Nobody should be wearing a lanyard / name badge outside of doing their job. Traditionally, where I grew up, you could spot people who worked for the MoD in the local supermarket because you could see part of the plain lanyard but the pass was hidden in the top pocket of the shirt / inside the wearer's top. This is what you should do with your badge on leaving your workplace if taking the whole thing off is too hard and advocate for plain lanyards rather than immediately identifying ones.

  • risk of the badge / lanyard being copied and an unauthorised person getting into the workplace
  • depending on where you work, being identified as working for certain organisations is itself a risk to you / potentially your employer - think laboratories that store / work on potentially lethal things / do medical research on animals / anything in the defence industry / in some areas working for the police.
  • risk of someone catching your name + workplace and social engineering information about you from whoever answers your work phones
  • risk of someone up to no good, now having a reasonably good idea of where to find you during part of the week, and even if it's not as straightforward as an office working 9-5pm, if they know the workplace all they have to do is wait.
  • if you work somewhere with disgruntled customers/clients, they might not care who at the organisation they target - they might consider you a legitimate target just because of who you work for - from a supermarket your next stop might be home. Do you want disgruntled customers following you home?

How much information you want to disclose about yourself to strangers in supermarkets etc is up to you, but wearing a work lanyard + name badge is potentially telling people a lot more about yourself than you realise.

BSideBaby · 15/11/2021 19:17

Because they want to presumably.

Bloomin' people, going about doing things you wouldn't OP. Best not to get irritated by stuff like this though or you'll be completely worn out by the time you're 'a certain age' (whatever that is).

bestcattoyintheworld · 15/11/2021 19:17

It's so they can quickly take them them off and use them to strangle 'men of a certain age' who are being annoying.

Courtier · 15/11/2021 19:18

Because they've gone to the supermarket on their way to/from work and haven't taken it off yet. Simple as that.

Curbaisti · 15/11/2021 19:18

You'd hate me then not only do I forget to take my lanyard off I normally end up with 4 or 5 pens stuck in my ponytail. Thats being a 'certain age for you, imagine

bringonyourwreckingball · 15/11/2021 19:18

I tend to forget I have mine on but as the actual lanyard is an old Hay Festival one rather than my actual employer I doubt I’m giving much away.

Luminousnose · 15/11/2021 19:19

I don’t wear my NHS (yes I’m very very important - so much so that I’ll be getting a pay rise up to the minimum wage in April!) smart card in a lanyard, but if I did I would definitely keep it on in the supermarket because the photo is 15 years old and I’d like to show people I was young and gorgeous once!

I also tend to forget to take my face mask off as I’m so used to wearing it. I have been known to go to a restaurant, sit down at the table and, when my food arrives, put my mask back on!

I am definitely a woman of ‘a certain age’, but I forget what it is … …

ineedsun · 15/11/2021 19:20

@MattHancocksSexTape

Because they aren’t as clever and amazing as you.
🤣🤣

@Practicebeingpatient

I find it odd - when I worked in an office the first thing I did upon leaving was put my badge and lanyard in my pocket.

Then again I always exchanged my work lanyard for one from a brewery or distillery so no-one would have known where I worked anyway.

Karissa1979 · 15/11/2021 19:21

@521Jeanie

I take mine off and hang it straight by the front door at home - if it was tucked into a random bag or pocket, I'd forget it the next day.
This!
