Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

I tend to wear mine because I don't want to risk leaving it in the car and being nicked. My lanyards give me full access to some pretty high profile buildings. It doesn't bare thinking about the shitstorm it would create, so I just don't take it from round my neck between leaving my house in the morning and returning at night.

I'm sure I do look like a bit of a knob though on the occasion I do pick up shopping on the way home

BlueTouchPaper · 15/11/2021 18:37

Am I the only one that finds this odd?

I'd take bets on it.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 15/11/2021 18:37

@ClemDanFango

Who cares?
Or ^ this

Too hard to choose, so I'll take both!!

ThirdElephant · 15/11/2021 18:37

@PingedPotato

Because they have forgotten to take it off I'd imagine
This
Terfydactyl · 15/11/2021 18:37

@FuzzyPuffling

They are "Women of a certain age"???

As soon as you hit 40 or 50 or whatever age you deem "certain" you instantly forget who you are and need to wear a lanyard so you can constantly refer to it.

Yup, if it's not round my neck I'm usually stumped about where it will be. I wear it all my workday although the picture (and name bit) are reversed in the holder.
ItsAlwaysThere · 15/11/2021 18:38

Because we are rushing from work with a million things on our minds and don't think to take it off?

NotMyCat · 15/11/2021 18:39

@whataballbag

Because so far I’ve lost 4 door passes and 3 smart cards so I’ve trained myself to only take it off by the door hook.

Not arsed about people seeing it or knowing where I work. The green uniform gives it away a bit

I dunno, I got an earful once off a woman in Asda for not knowing where the sugar was I was wearing a green coat with ambulance on it in giant letters She said she was going to complain to the store manager as I was unhelpful. Wished I was there to hear that conversation GrinGrin
Changethetoner · 15/11/2021 18:40

Because it's the only fashion accessory allowed.

Bettybantz · 15/11/2021 18:40

Shit, I’ve still got mine on at home. Have I reached ‘a certain age’?

Rockieroad · 15/11/2021 18:40

I’m not yet a woman of a certain age but I once met a friend straight from work for dinner. We’ve been sat chatting for a good half an hour when I glanced down and realised I was wearing my work lanyard. I was mortified and immediately asked why she hadn’t said anything?! She replied she thought I was just really proud of where I worked 😂. I wasn’t and quickly took it off and stuffed it in my bag.

So I guess my answer is… sometimes it’s forgetfulness?

cheninblanc · 15/11/2021 18:40

Because I forget. What does it matter

BackInBlackAgain · 15/11/2021 18:40

In my local supermarket it seems to be mostly men who are still wearing their lanyard to work pass clipped to their waist band. Can’t comment if they are over a certain age as you didnt specify what the age range was.

When I used to wear one I used to forget to take it off, not showing off where I worked, i wore one for so many years it was like wearing clothes, totally forget I had it on.

MrsFoxyplease · 15/11/2021 18:42

They think it makes them look important/shows other people that they have a job and aren't on benefits.
Seriously.

PeppaNeedsToBeWrappedInBacon · 15/11/2021 18:42

They want to make you jealous that they work in the college or in the NHS.

SarahBellam · 15/11/2021 18:42

I am a proud lanyard wearing woman of a certain age and there’s nothing l like better than displaying where I work while I’m buying onions in Lidl.

Or, it hangs on my mirror at home and if I take it off anywhere else and put it in a handbag or a pocket or the glove compartment I WILL definitely lose it (because I am a woman of a certain age with a very busy life and I forget things).

IntemperateSpirits · 15/11/2021 18:42

@Waahingwashingwashing

What happens if people can identify where I work from my lanyard in the supermarket?
Used to work in pharmaceutical industry and when you have people taking down your car reg no when you drive on site, you don't tend to want to wear a visible lanyard off site. It was a relief when they stopped printing surnames and company logo on the ID card.
Ted27 · 15/11/2021 18:43

I am 56

Probably A Woman Of A Certain Age

I am not wearing my lanyard as I worked at home today.
When I do go to the office, I waste too much of my very valuable time fishing about in my bag trying to find the damn thing.
Being Very Important I don’t often have a lunch break so if I do go out I don’t want to waste valuable time fishing about for it when I get back.
Or maybe I just forget about it.

rwalker · 15/11/2021 18:45

Put mine on when I leave the house and take it off when I get in .
I don't have that high option of myself that anyone would be interested enough in me to look .

PeppaNeedsToBeWrappedInBacon · 15/11/2021 18:45

@MrsFoxyplease I can see this. I work from home the majority of the week and when I drop my daughter off at nursery without makeup on (or the remanence of last nights mascaraBlush) in joggers, yesterday’s stained T-shirt and unruly hair.. (I have a two year old and it’s easy to get up, ship her off to nursery then come home and shower before work) I feel like I have to throw in the odd “by darling, I’ll pick you up after WORK!” - obviously I don’t do this but I do walk away wondering what they must think of me or what I do 😂😂

traka · 15/11/2021 18:45

Not sure how anybody can forget when it's hanging round your neck

BlackCatMum · 15/11/2021 18:45

Why not?

Ted27 · 15/11/2021 18:46

@MrsFoxyplease

seriously?

Many working people do receive benefits, me being one of them.

I also have a lanyard for being a City Host, maybe I should wear both at the same time and people will think I’m really important

Ozanj · 15/11/2021 18:47

Bil said local police have already asked local hospitals / surgeries (NHS, private) that nurses, paramedics and doctors wear their lanyards everywhere - so they can be easily identified in an emergency. So if you only saw this today it’s probably a terror response

HappyDays40 · 15/11/2021 18:49

Why does it matter?

lochmaree · 15/11/2021 18:49

we arent allowed to wear our lanyard in public or anything else that identifies us to where we work. not secretive or anything but public sector organisation that can get some negative attention now and again!
