Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.
@Ricetwisty but that’s the whole point some employees will all ways forgot or deliberately wear it off site. If a business needs to keep identities of employees confidential then it’s a real security issue handing out lanyards with their name on and not policing the removal of them when leaving premises/sites.
THATS THE POINT

They expect people to be capable adults who remember to take their lanyards off, they aren't peering into peoples cars as they leave to check, but the rules are clear and its important to not forget. If you do I go back to my original point, how do you remember to get dressed in the morning.

However for lanyards where it matters not, who cares as and when people wear them as long as they're the breakaway ones.

If it has your name clearly on it, your name is visible to all, it can lead to stalking issues. Society should not be like this, I quite agree but that is another matter.

Considering how small the writing is such people would have to pretty much bend down and nuzzle my upper abs to read it and my name on there isn’t the name I go by and anyone who called me it obviously had to dig deep to find it and would get double points for being able to pronounce it correctly.

lololololollll · 16/11/2021 07:45

I always forgot to take mine off. Would get to dinner time and my husband would remind me. Writing a thread about this is kind of odd, but then I'm joining in so I'm odd too

boreon · 16/11/2021 07:50

For me.......I have half an hour for my lunch and the supermarket is a 5 min drive from work. I need my card to get in and out of the building, sometimes with bags in my hands. My card stays round my neck from the moment I leave for work every day till the moment I get back and I put it in my bag ready for the next day.
The one time I took it off on the way gone and put it in my coat pocket, I forgot it the next day causing a nightmare for me and my colleagues.
So it stays round my neck all day.
Don't see the issue to be fair, no-o e has ever mentioned it !

BruiserWoods · 16/11/2021 07:52

I sometimes have my dinner and watch some tv with the lanyard still on
Im on the bus now, NOT WEARING IT.
God i hope its in my bag. 😟

boreon · 16/11/2021 07:54

And to add
My name is not visible on my lanyard
Just the generic place of work
Which is massive so no way of identifying who I am or what service I work for!
They know I've had my Covid vaccine though Grin

Alwayscheerful · 16/11/2021 07:59

Off to Google suffragette lanyard Smile

BravoWhiskey · 16/11/2021 08:49

Absolutely astonishing that women (of a certain age) get criticised for something so normal, so common.

Everyone else (men... younger people...) can apparently just get on with their lives without all this fucking judgement.

Will this shit ever end?

ColinTheKoala · 16/11/2021 09:03

@ilovepixie

People who don't carry handbags where do you put your purse, phone, keys, make up and so on.
I take a rucksack to work when I go to the office, but when I go out for lunch I just take my purse (or my phone as it has a card in the case, and lots of people just use their phones to pay anyway). And wear my lanyard, naturally, so I can get back through the security barriers when I get back to the office.
ColinTheKoala · 16/11/2021 09:05

It's also worth mentioning that all the kids at our local sixth form colleges wear their lanyards when they are on the buses and trains etc (and not because they need them for a special fare, they have different cards for that). And they are not Women of a Certain Age, they are 16-18 year olds.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/11/2021 10:17

See the OP dumped and ran.

mewe3 · 16/11/2021 10:41

Because why would I? It's part of my 'uniform' and I don't strip off before entering the shop. I don't mind if someone identifies where I work

LagunaBubbles · 16/11/2021 10:49

Because mine is NHS and I want everyone clapping for me Grin

BiddyPop · 16/11/2021 11:49

In my case, we need it to open all internal doors, which means I can't get to the loo without it. So I wear it round my neck as I was forgetting it too often in a pocket.

I put it on as I walk into the building in the morning, and take it off and put it into the pocket in my work bag as I take the bag in home at night. As I am usually running for a train or to get home. So if I go out at lunchtime, or pop into a shop on my way home, I will still be wearing it. Not to identify myself, but so I don't lose it by not sticking to the routine that works for me.

BiddyPop · 16/11/2021 11:51

And while I might now be a woman of a certain age, I have been doing this since I first needed a visible I'd badge in 1 job, and then security card for doors for my next job, as soon as I left uni - more than 20 years now.

Firesidefox · 16/11/2021 11:59

I think some people like a work lanyard as it feels like they belong somewhere.

I have always refused to wear one, keeping my work access pass in my pocket rather than around my neck like a tagged animal on a farm.

Could you not just have added to the discussion without being so rude about other people?
Itsbritneybitchh · 16/11/2021 12:12

Because I can’t be arsed taking mine off

Refusing to wear one one be a disciplinary matter where I work. I imagine this is the case at lots of workplaces, where tedious rebellion for no reason tends to be frowned upon...

We are supposed to take ours off (due to the nature of the work you could potentially be a 'target') but lots of people forget at lunchtime or whatever so would be wearing it in the shops etc. It's not really a big deal is it? And doesn't cause a problem for anyone else.

Firesidefox · 16/11/2021 12:35

It's not the people wearing them I'm angry with, it's the bosses insisting that they be worn @claymodels @mistermagpie

I would hate to work for a place where they micromanaged to such a degree. To me, it's like being tagged like a farm animal. To others, it's a positive sign of belonging somewhere and being proud to belong there.

Well, it's not one or the other is it? I neither feel like a farm animal not do I derive some sort of sense of belonging from it... it's a work pass that opens doors in the building where I work and identifies me as an employee when I'm inside said building. It's attached to a lanyard for convenience and visibility.

That's it. Same for most people I expect. It is you who is ascribing it some sort of greater meaning.

Omg 😅 You're such a maverick keeping your fob in your pocket.

@Firesidefox you're joking, right? 🤣🤣🤣 It's a security measure where I work and not wearing your lanyard and ID is a disciplinary.

I don't think it would suit a renegade like you who clearly fights against the system by keeping your pass in your pocket.

blessedbethechocolate · 16/11/2021 13:03

I do this as I forget it's on. The fact I'm in a bright purple uniform with the logo of my place of work all over it I think most people have an idea where I work without the lanyard.

RaininSummer · 16/11/2021 13:09

I keep my credit card in it too for hopping on bus and shopping without having to rummage about. Mine doesn't identify my workplace though as it's not allowed out of the office.
