Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

OP posts:

I'm now thinking of having lanyards made that say "WOMAN OF A CERTAIN AGE". Who wants one? What colours would you like?

OP, you can have a free one Grin

twilightermummy · 15/11/2021 22:26

*Are you suggesting they’re showing off about where they work or how important they are? You may have a point actually.**

This is actually my theory Grin

RavingAnnie · 15/11/2021 22:32
  1. I forgot.
  2. I might lose it.
  3. I don't care.

Not sure why you do tbh.

tigger1001 · 15/11/2021 22:35

I don't take mine off. It's not usually visible over my coat. I would lose it if I took it off and put it in my pocket/bag etc.

Still have it on now 😂😂 it's under my jumper and I forget I have it on. It lives on my bedside table so I take it off when I get changed

ilovepixie · 15/11/2021 22:43

People who don't carry handbags where do you put your purse, phone, keys, make up and so on.

ilovepixie · 15/11/2021 22:57

I wear a name badge at work with just my first name but I work on a till and the till receipt prints out our full name.

I don’t have a purse and don’t wear make up. Everything else, into my coat like a man would do. My coats generally have inside zip pockets and such... we have pickpockets and handbag snatchers along my commute.
londonrach · 15/11/2021 23:05

I always left mine on as id lose it if taken off..if off i was at home and it was on my dresser...only ever on dresser or around my neck

Artesia · 15/11/2021 23:14

I had a quick ask around OP. Turns out it's mainly just to piss you off.

Reminds me of a time my friend saw a photo of me in my lanyard and thought I had a new necklace on!

I do sometimes forget to take mine off but I do always wear mine with the card facing inwards.

shakingmytambourineatyou · 15/11/2021 23:27

I went in Tesco with an elastic on my wrist today. I don't even work in an elastic shop. That'll teach 'em.

itsutterlyshit · 15/11/2021 23:46

Because the pockets on my work jacket are shit and I don't want to lose it.
Mine is leopard print though and I don't work in a zoo, so it gives nothing away.

NeverChange · 16/11/2021 00:12

Multiple reasons:-

I cannot do anything at work without it. Access to main door and internal doors, cannot use printer or photocopier without, cannot book meeting rooms without it, it doubles as a cash card for the canteen.

If I don't wear it and leave it in the exact same place every evening. It ends up in the car,a pockets, the wrong handbag, laptop bag and I either forget about it or cannot find it.

I turn it the wrong way around so no name or workplace visible but I'm not losing it. I don't wear it for any other reason and suspect most people are the same.

I can't understand how this could actually bother someone.

Would also love to know what "women of a certain age is", do I qualify?

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 16/11/2021 00:16

When I become a woman of a certain age do I get my own lanyard as an initiation or rite of passage? Grin

Enough4me · 16/11/2021 00:18

Thanks @singingsands, I'd like to sign up for one: purple and green please.

I'm of a certain age where I know what women are and so can I have printed on mine - "yes I'm a WOMAN of a certain age"?

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/11/2021 00:33

It's a sex communication thing. The 2020s version of the rubber wristbands worn in the 00s. The colours on the lanyard mean certain things to certain people.😎

Yes please!! Suffragette colours. Maybe in sequin form.
StarlightLady · 16/11/2021 05:56

If it has your name clearly on it, your name is visible to all, it can lead to stalking issues. Society should not be like this, I quite agree but that is another matter.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/11/2021 06:17

@bestcattoyintheworld

It's so they can quickly take them them off and use them to strangle 'men of a certain age' who are being annoying.
not to mention MN readers that haven't reached a certain age who presume to dictate what we do with our lanyards in the supermarket
ThinWomansBrain · 16/11/2021 06:33

@Inertia

My work badge sometimes sets off the security alarms at shop doors. It’s a lot easier to tell/show security that it’s my work badge if I’m wearing it in a lanyard that it would be to rummage around in my bag.
does it screech "woman of a certain age in the bagging area!"? Grin
Arrowheart · 16/11/2021 06:56

I now want a 'woman of a certain age' lanyard to wear in the supermarket. People will see it and know that once a woman has reached said certain age she has put up with a lifetime of shit and will no longer take any from anyone (especially from people like the OP, who have not yet reached that certain age, who dare to question the lanyard). WOMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE UNITE!!!!

Oh yes please. It would either have to be pink, cos we is women, or purple " when I am old I shall wear purple..." or beige, as women of a certain age are invisible.
BruiserWoods · 16/11/2021 07:10

On the bus in the morning its young thin men whose suits are STILL a bit too tight who seem to have lanyards swinging. Nobody cares though. I do notice women's handbags though. Mad to think that somebody objected to lanyards is tesco.

expatmigrant · 16/11/2021 07:28

Fifteen pages of comments and still going.
This 'woman of a certain age' is here sipping her coffee and about to put her lanyard on to leave the house...to go to work...via the supermarket.
I will always think of you now OP Wink
