Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

OP posts:

@PlanDeRaccordement plus I am talking about businesses where it is a security to risk if it’s employees are know to the public, if you can identify who you work for on LinkedIn your not working for the type of business I’m talking about.

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/11/2021 21:29
@PlanDeRaccordement when I said a company lanyard I meant one with the business name on, a one that does not identify the business is completely different and I don’t think that is what the OP was referring to.
No it’s not because it’s still a company lanyard. Re-read the OP.
She said plainly “Sometimes clearly identifying where they work.”
sometimes
So OP was clearly referring to all work lanyards not just the ones sometimes identifying where you work.

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Forget to take it off usually

Although I sometimes wonder if they tend to mitigate unconscious (or even conscious) racism or other prejudices.

That’s interesting @GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing can I ask in what way they possibly mitigate racism? (Genuinely interested!).

@Ricetwisty but that’s the whole point some employees will all ways forgot or deliberately wear it off site. If a business needs to keep identities of employees confidential then it’s a real security issue handing out lanyards with their name on and not policing the removal of them when leaving premises/sites.

That’s not what you said in your OP. Might want to be more clear up front instead of drip feeding new parameters. Note I’m not the only one who disagreed with your initial statement.

Because when women reach that 'certain age' (whatever it is) they lose their memory and get lost easily, the lanyard is to signal to the shop staff that they may need assistance and in severe cases may need the tracker hidden within (the lanyard not the woman) activated. Of course these lanyards are made to look as if they belong to various employers/companies so not to cause embarrassment to the poor unfortunate women of that dreadful certain age. Hope that was helpful.

You needed to ask here why an individual wears there work lanyard to a supermarket Confused

My lanyard is my work identification, I am required to wear it at all times, so it’s on me when I leave the house and when I return home, it’s just another extension of my work attire.

I’m not sure I come under your certain age bracket Hmm I’m mid 30’s.

gukvguk · 15/11/2021 21:38

Because I've just popped in on my lunch break? Or because I've forgotten to take it off.

Why does it matter to you?

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 21:38

@PlanDeRaccordement so when I wrote - “ Anyone in a job where you have security breaches if you know where you work” isn’t clear?

Latenightreader · 15/11/2021 21:40

I forgot to take mine off a few months ago and managed to come back from the library with a full Anglo-Saxon costume we had been turning the place over trying to find a fortnight before. My predecessor had leant it without the full paperwork as it was only supposed to be for a couple of days, but then lockdown happened. It might be there still if it wasn’t for my lanyard!

Because it makes me feel very important! Wink

willstarttomorrow · 15/11/2021 21:49

I never wear mine around my neck, mainly because I work in child protection and have been in the habit over the years of not identifying my role out of respect to the families I work with. However, every child in secondary school and college around here wears one and it is part of their uniform now, not a massive deal really. The same for most workers who just happen to put it on in the morning and take it off when they get home.

No it’s not. It doesn’t even make sense, the part “if you know where you work” because I presume even women of a certain age know where they work?

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 21:54

@PlanDeRaccordement your just picking now. Wasting my time on you.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 15/11/2021 21:54

I forget to take it off
No more mystery than that
I wear it all day every day at work and don't end to forget it's there unless it's in my way or I am getting undressed

Not sure why I would care that people will know where I work. I mean that kind of is the point of being made to wear it at work and I can't see that it's a huge risk for someone in the supermarket to know my name or that I work at the local hospital.
I have a lot higher risk of a stalker at work than in the supermarket

Thwackit · 15/11/2021 21:55

I work at King Dong of SoHo Sex Shop and it’s really embarrassing when I forget.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 15/11/2021 21:55

The only time I wear mine out of work is because I've forgotten to take it off because I'm a woman of a certain age with a shit memory.
I have to say I think absolutely nothing when I see someone wearing one.

Loubiemoo · 15/11/2021 21:57

How else would I remember who I am?

tallduckandhandsome · 15/11/2021 21:57

I’ve had the same work pass for 10 years, and it still opens all turnstiles and newer security points.

Is that a record?

Timeisavirtue · 15/11/2021 22:01

Not sure why is any of your business op, could be many reasons why they’ve left them on. Personally I take mine off before I’ve left the building, but that’s because it gets on my nerves.

Thecurliestwurly · 15/11/2021 22:02

OP, I like to wear mine to make a fashion statement.

I also like to nick other people's ID and pretend I am them. The trip to the supermarket on the way home is a part of the act. Today I was a cashier in NatWest and tomorrow I am going to be a consultant on A& E Grin

Nietzschethehiker · 15/11/2021 22:05

WTF how is this even remotely a thing. Officially the most vapid reason for judging other people.

The only times I have even been aware of etiquette with lanyards etc were a couple of very specific security related workplaces and for a long time in a scenario where we all had 5 point catches due to the liklihood of being strangled with them deliberately and wearing them face in so our last names couldn't be seen.

I can honestly say ridiculous judginess from random passersby about having it in a supermarket never even registered. Even for my early twenties.

I'm a woman of a certain age now but if it helps at all I WFH so rarely ever have to wear my lanyard. How does that define me?

MakkaPakkas · 15/11/2021 22:07

God, I hate women of a certain age.
All going around.
Doing things. Being embarrassing.
Being less good than all us women of an uncertain age. They should probably all be locked away until their age has improved and their lanyard management skills are better.
