Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

OP posts:
Longingforatikihut · 15/11/2021 20:40

Mine comes off at the door at home and goes back on as I leave the next morning. Otherwise I forget where I put it and when I get to work I can't get into my department, my locker (where i keep my labcoat, medicines and other useful work tat) use the staff library.

I'm really sorry my routine upsets you so much. And fyi, I'm not of a certain age, I'm just knackered, but thanks.

noblegreenk · 15/11/2021 20:46

I've done this on occasion and it's because I've forgotten to take it off.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 15/11/2021 20:47

What a ridiculous question. Like wondering why some people are carrying an umbrella, or some people are wearing a scarf. Because they put it on when they leave home, and take it off when they arrive back again, giving it zero thought between those times and, I expect, not thinking for one minute that some strange person might spend any time whatsoever second-guessing them.

Why do you think they wear them? I'm sure you must have a theory juicier than 'forgot.'

MichonnesBBF · 15/11/2021 20:47

Honestly if I don't take my lanyard off when I take my glasses off, before bed/shower...(yes I will sit on an evening without my glasses even though I shouldn't) then I have no idea at all where I have put it...glasses, lanyard stay together, just like salt and pepper.Grin

cleowasmycat · 15/11/2021 20:48

I can't wear my around my neck. Feels like it's going to strangle me and I get it trapped in drawers. I clip it to a trouser pocket.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/11/2021 20:49

Forget to take it off usually

Although I sometimes wonder if they tend to mitigate unconscious (or even conscious) racism or other prejudices.

PathOfLeastResitance · 15/11/2021 20:52

If I’m in a bad mood I wear my lanyard to ensure I don’t lose my shit at some poor customer/someone I have deemed to be annoying. I remain in work mode and don’t tell anyone to fuck off. Win win.

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 20:53

@PlanDeRaccordement so you work for a business where it’s a security breach if you are identified as working there, yet they hand out a lanyard with the business name clearly on it and you wander in out with no security to stop you?

Redkatagain · 15/11/2021 20:57

Please, please PLEASE take it off before you drive. They are so dangerous to wear while driving if you have a crash.
The forward motion onto an airbag or steering wheel can force them into your torso.

Google it!
The following is from the BBC

NHS staff are being warned not to wear their lanyards when driving or travelling in cars because of the risk of injury if an airbag goes off.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/11/2021 20:57

Same reason why I am easily identified as where I work thanks to my uniform. Because I a nipping in on my way home (bit embarrassing really....imagine wearing a tesco uniform and shopping at Asda on your way home...its like that :o ).

What is making me ponder more is why you care?!

Peach01 · 15/11/2021 20:57

They're busy, less of a chance they'll lose it, it's easier.

I doubt these lanyard wearing, women of a certain age are engaging in a secret thrill seek to see if anyone in a supermarket is paying the lanyard a bit too much attention.

I worked in a place that was very hush hush about being identified. There was nothing on the lanyard or pass that could link it to the business.

phoenixrosehere · 15/11/2021 20:59

Because I’m on my break and just grabbing something that I can pop in the microwave at work because the cafes are too busy and I don’t want to take it off only to put it back on again or I was racing for the bus and didn’t think to take it off and it is easier not to lose it if it’s around my neck especially since I have a set of keys to where I work on them.

Pedalpushers · 15/11/2021 21:01

It's not a great idea. My friend was found on social media channels by a weird man who said he had seen her on the train and got her name off her lanyard. He then turned up outside her work, thankfully disappeared after that incident.

curlygirlcrying · 15/11/2021 21:02

Because us women of a certain age like to piss others off who have too much time on their hands looking at lanyards 🤣

Maireas · 15/11/2021 21:05

@echt

I forgot to take mine off last week when shopping in Aldi.

At 67 I've moved beyond a certain age into a definite one.

I'm glad so many have taken the OP's post in good humour. I saw red immediately at yet another ageist put-down of a woman by a woman.

I'm a definite age, too Wink! So much ageist nonsense on MN, it's depressing at times.
DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 21:13

@Ricetwisty or an idea wear a lanyard that doesn’t have your business name emblazoned on it if it’s a security breach to know you work there!

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/11/2021 21:15

No, no and no.
It can be known you work there...ie you can say you do on LinkedIn etc.
The lanyard has no business name on it, but is company issued
There are lots of layers of security

DiamondBright · 15/11/2021 21:16

@LittleDandelionClock Can Vicars go off shift? How would that work? What if there was a religious emergency and the vicar was off duty? You'd need an on call rota !!!

Justmebeingme245 · 15/11/2021 21:19

It’s saves me the hassle of stopping everyone in the supermarket to explain how important I am.

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 21:20

@PlanDeRaccordement when I said a company lanyard I meant one with the business name on, a one that does not identify the business is completely different and I don’t think that is what the OP was referring to.

WhatAHexIGotInto · 15/11/2021 21:21

Who even thinks about utter shit like this?

MichelleScarn · 15/11/2021 21:22

I have a herald who walks in front of me, however he's said he'll stop when I'm a certain age not good for his business 😢

But logically it's useful wearing them around buildings when at work? Unless someone knows the faces of all of their colleagues, surely it's easier if people have it clearly visible. Just take the bloody lanyards off when not at work, so lazy!

Helpstopthepain · 15/11/2021 21:27

I never wear mine (I work in mental health so have it in my pocket but don’t want to be strangled or make patients uncomfortable being with me on leave).

When do I get to A certain age? I’m early forties, am I nearly at lanyard wearing at all times age?

Justmebeingme245 · 15/11/2021 21:27

Well the bell and announcements were getting a bit tiresome. The arrival of the lanyard was a blessed relief to be fair.
