Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

Because they put the lanyard on as they leave the house to go to work then go to the supermarket straight from work and remove the lanyard as soon as they’re home again. This is what I do. Why, what reason do you imagine women “of a certain age” do it?

I take mine off and hang it straight by the front door at home - if it was tucked into a random bag or pocket, I'd forget it the next day.

If it's relevant I'm 37 and have done this for the last four years (before that I had a keycard instead, that lived in my car).

I always take mine off if shopping near to work. I’m a teacher and have previously had parents berating me in the dairy aisle. Plus I think it looks bad to wear the school lanyard whilst pushing a trolley filled with gin and wine. I just know there’s a MN thread there - ‘I saw a member of staff from a local school at the supermarket. She was blatantly buying booze and fags. Shall I put her picture on Twitter so the whole world can start shouting, ‘BURN THE WITCH!’ and sending her death threats?’

I do this because simply I can't be bothered to take it off, I don't care who sees he wear it and I'll take it off at home when I don't have to faff with it trying to shove it all into a coat pocket or something. Do people actually even care where I work?? Do they even notice?? Xx

I wear mine as I usually nip to the supermarket for my lunch and if I take it off I'd forget to put it
on again and I need it on for visits.

Probably rushing from work to home, grabbing food so there are no empty stomachs, while trying to balance the mental load and remember everything. Unless they work for MI5, literally nobody will care where they work.

Alternatively, they’re just showing off their fabulous careers. You know how those ‘women of a certain age’ can be.

i also hate wearing them.
some people are just show off, show off, pick your nose and blow off ... but if you get close enough their job title is trainee assistant pencil sharpener.

i am always very nosey re: the nhs lanyards and once had a very ha ha chat with a man who was a consultant ... i knew this becuase the lanyard said so. and he had far better things to do than to remember to take his lanyard off. so he wasn't grilling my cheese at all. (fyi)

You have no idea frankly.

Just because we cannot our lanyards off site without causing a security breach, doesn’t mean they don’t exist and that we are all bumbling around with zero biometric identification or secure area access codes displayed. Or perhaps you think we are all sub-dermally chipped by now as some places do?

Yeah true, they scan their arse on the way in to gain access to site, lanyards are so 2020.

My work badge sometimes sets off the security alarms at shop doors. It’s a lot easier to tell/show security that it’s my work badge if I’m wearing it in a lanyard that it would be to rummage around in my bag.

I’d hazard a guess that it shows they are pretty oblivious to security risks. Wearing my work lanyard outside of the building is considered a security breach and if I did it repeatedly, it’s be a disciplinary matter.

Because I take mine off in the same place at home everyday, so it is part of my routine to put on in the morning.
Not sure why I shouldn’t be wearing it in the supermarket.

Chuckling over this thread. Found the picture of the most idiotic case of forgetting you are wearing your lanyard....when pulling a sickie because you’re trying to overthrow the US Government....

Ohhh I get major points here.

I wear mine to supermarkets.
And have my iPad out.

And I make phonecalls with my iPad out whilst wearing my lanyard.

I'm a rep that visits supermarkets to do her job...

I'm a woman of a certain age and I rip mine off and stuff it in my pocket as I leave.

Clearly I am of a certain age because I have no idea how people can read names on lanyards without getting uncomfortably close. I would have to lift it up, move it back and forth in front of my eyes to get it into focus and then peer at it before I got any identifying info from it.

This always bamboozles me because I strip mine off the moment I leave the building. If I ever forget then, I take it off in the car because it feels uncomfortable with a seatbelt tugging on it.

What else do people wear on their lanyards? I currently have two pens, a whistle, a pig thing made for me, a poppy key ring, an emergency money holder and a small hand sanitizer bottle. I rattle!

Because if I’m in morrisons and still have it round my neck they give me 10% discount! 👍

exactly, my name is so small I can barely read it myself. And the photo looks nothing like me.

I remember picking up some elses ID from the floor in the office and not recognising who it was, Turned out to be my manager - the photo was at least 20 years old, he looked about 16

I forgot to take mine off last week when shopping in Aldi.

At 67 I've moved beyond a certain age into a definite one.

I'm glad so many have taken the OP's post in good humour. I saw red immediately at yet another ageist put-down of a woman by a woman.
