Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

I used to wear my work lanyard in the supermarket all the time. It was never a conscious decision, I would just forget to take it off. However, I work in Local Government and after a few experiences with extremely upset people threatening the Council and it’s staff and waiting outside the offices where we work I never wear it now.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/11/2021 19:39

I have been known to wear two lanyards at once,

@Magpiecomplex That's just showing off. I bet you're a woman of a certain age as well, aren't you?

@BrightYellowDaffodil Guilty as charged... Grin

ElephantOfRisk · 15/11/2021 19:42

You aren't supposed to wear a lanyard while driving for safety reasons so we've all been told to remove them when leaving the office.

[Grin] poor doddery old dears.

Redsquirrel5 · 15/11/2021 19:45

Usually because I have either nipped out at lunch time or gone straight after work. It is about a 7 minute walk. My mind is on other things and I forgot to take it off. I don’t take it off until I get home and then hang it up near the keys.

BigYellowHat · 15/11/2021 19:45

Is this bothering you in an way at all? Halloween Biscuit

bossybloss · 15/11/2021 19:47

My lanyard is orange ...I so wish I had taken it off in b and q !! 🤣🤣🤣

CristinaYangismySpiritAnimal · 15/11/2021 19:53

What’s the certain age?

I stop at the supermarket on my way home from work, and my routine is to take my lanyard off and hang it over the bannister when I walk through the front door, so it’s still on me when I’m in the supermarket. Who gives a shit? Is it shocking that people who work also need to shop? Should we be ashamed of that and not allow people to know where we work?!

RoomOfRequirement · 15/11/2021 19:55

Your insecurities are showing.

Dutchesss · 15/11/2021 19:55

I tuck mine in, and now I can feel forever smugly superior. Halloween Grin

Mine's got a set of work keys on it and also gets me into the building. If I leave it somewhere it's a pain in the arse. So I take if off the minute I get home and not before and it stays on the mantelpiece until the next morning when I pick it up and put it on just before I leave the house. I don't want it getting lost inside the main part of my bag causing me to scrabble around searching for it amidst bag detritus. And with the keys it's too bulky to put into a narrow side pocket.

I'm not sure why this is even a question. Or why I'm bothering to answer, come to that. The trivia you get caught up in on MN. Hmm

@DonnaDonna01

Anyone in a job where you have security breaches if you know where you work is not issued with a company lanyard believe me.
I can honestly say that is not true.
SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/11/2021 20:01

@PingedPotato

Because they have forgotten to take it off I'd imagine
I occasionally used to forget to take mine off.

I would be amazed as the bus driver handed me my ticket saying "Here you are Bartholemina*" and wonder how he knew. Was he pasychic? Had we met before? NO! I was still wearing my lanyard!

*Nor my real name {grin}

DunderMifflinSalesRep · 15/11/2021 20:02

I cooked dinner wearing mine the other day. Didn't realise till I sat down to start eating I was still wearing the thing.

Keladrythesaviour · 15/11/2021 20:03

I also wear my hi Viz. I'm not worried about not being seen, I just forget to take it off after work.

Skinnyankles · 15/11/2021 20:03

I wear mine to the supermarket as I'm incredibly important and I like people to know who I am.....

It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that my mind is preoccupied with unfinished work, kids, what to cook for dinner etc. Also mine is an access fob to all the many security doors in the building. It tends to only lives on on my neck or the the special place in my house where I hang it. It could get lost if it was anywhere else and it would be an absolute arse to get them cancelled and replaced.

yes, I have also been told that I could be pierced to death by my own lanyard in the event of a small crash. Apparently.
TheNoonBell · 15/11/2021 20:04

If I going to the office I take it off the hook and pop it round my neck when I leave the house and keep it on until I get home to put it back on the peg.

If I don't I will leave it in some random place, simple effective solution for a mupper like myself.

Actually we have them. They were mandatory until they ran out of them too. Stupid idea.
yikerspipers · 15/11/2021 20:05

The whole point of a lanyard is to wear something around your neck. I take mine off when I get home. Why on earth would you even care?

DonnaDonna01 · 15/11/2021 20:05

@RockingMyFiftiesNot I would have serious concerns about that, they need to look at their security protocols. Unless of course you are not allowed to leave the property wearing them and security enforce this at all exits?

FreedomFaith · 15/11/2021 20:06

@Waahingwashingwashing

What happens if people can identify where I work from my lanyard in the supermarket?
When it's public sector, there are certain people who tend to throw insults at you because of course, an admin person in the public sector has complete control over everything. Hmm They've been known to attack people too just because of where they work.
