Is it really that bad - Tesco Advert

Isthatthebestyoucando · 14/11/2021 18:20

People on Twitter are calling for a boycott of Tesco because of this ad

Apparently it's a political message of medical apartheid.

AIBU to think it's one small scene in an advert referencing last years lack of Christmas? FWIW I'm not crazy about Tesco in general and I don't think people should be coerced into medical treatments they are unhappy to take..... but seriously is this advert worth a boycott?

What’s the point of having the covid pass and Santa of all people requiring it? I didn’t realise he went through customs on his sleigh.

You do know he's not real?

ronfa · 14/11/2021 21:43

I stand by my original point: putting ANY Covid references in an ad, let alone Covid references in a Christmas ad is shitty and insensitive.

Why? I think it's silly to pretend a pandemic hasn't happened & last Christmas was "normal".

ronfa · 14/11/2021 21:45

I’m pretty sure you can get a covid pass without being vaccinated,

I travelled with a "pass" to show I tested negative, I was still waiting for the vaccine.

Rainbowsew · 14/11/2021 21:47

Nothing wrong with it in my opinion, wouldn't have even noticed it if not pointed out by this

WhiteVanWoman91 · 14/11/2021 21:47

Best way to deal with perpetually offended Twidiots is to ignore them.

BonnesVacances · 14/11/2021 21:49

@YesItsMeIDontCare

Does that mean they'll be no anti-vaxxers in Tesco's?

That's a win 😁

Exactly. Maybe he could have been wearing a mask too and that would have kept the non mask wearing away as well.

Whycatspaint · 14/11/2021 21:57

I think it's great! It's a feel good theme!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/11/2021 22:01

I’m waiting for a booze ad, with a fat, jolly old Father Christmas reminding everybody that in the U.K. he expects a tot of something warming (plus of course a mince pie or two) not the cold and cheerless glass of milk he gets across the pond. 🥃🎅🏻

(I did hear a rumour that he’s gone dairy-free, but it’s for the sake of the planet, nothing medical, so no need to worry about butter in the mince pie pastry.).

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 14/11/2021 22:03

This.

Plus no antivaxers at Tesco seems like an even better advert to me!

iheartredsquirrels · 14/11/2021 22:05

What happened to freedom to choose re; the vaccine? I don't give a shit if some one wants to boycott tescos. Their choice I doubt anyone will give a toss.

bluesky45 · 14/11/2021 22:08

Isn't the point is that he doesn't have to isolate when coming in from abroad (the north pole presumably) and therefore he does have to show a COVID pass, but can't the COVID pass show recent infection or negative test too? So is it really a medical apartheid political Vax statement or just showing how Santa would have to get into the country if he was coming on a plane? I dunno, I'm double vaxxed so really not offended by it. Everyone should be vaxxed by now 🤷🏼‍♀️

saveourtrees · 14/11/2021 22:09

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

Tesco should remember that they are a shop and ditch the politics ffs. I'm all for vaccines but I dont think this is appropriate at all.
This. John Lewis ad aswell. What is it with random shops and propaganda
iheartredsquirrels · 14/11/2021 22:10

some of these anti vaxxers come across as real twats.

WeMazeUp · 14/11/2021 22:11

Some people are bonkers it’s just an add

LittleDandelionClock · 14/11/2021 22:13

Anything that gets the batshit anti vaxxers backs up is OK with me Grin

KikoLemons · 14/11/2021 22:15

Loved it - funny and apt. Roll with the times.
And yes COVID was awful for some people (I lost a job, several friends and a close family member), but we're getting through the pandemic/lockdown collectively.

Should we ban baby ads, car ads, holiday ads, house ads because they upset people who have suffered associated losses.?
I'm getting the sense that they've read the mood right. We can shop, we can gather, we can travel, we can work and we can celebrate again.
(And to be political Shock that's largely because we've (nearly) all been jabbed. )

Lindy2 · 14/11/2021 22:18

I'm perfectly happy for antivaxers to be pissed off.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 14/11/2021 22:31

If I worked for tesco PR, this would be the basis of my campaign from now on.
mustlovegin · 14/11/2021 22:58

These ads seem a particularly British phenomenon for some reason. Why do we seem to have the need for these big multinational companies to act like they are our mates?

I agree. But the ads are not always driven by a British team.

In the case of the recent John Lewis debacle it was an American director from a global American headquartered advertising agency.

The public mood, values and ideologies are being steered by foreign/global conglomerates or shareholders and their PR teams that are not even British. Worrying

Blinky21 · 14/11/2021 23:08

Love the covid pass bit! Good for Tesco. Unfortunately last year didn't 'stop' people which is why we had a massive spike in deaths in January...

Blueskip · 14/11/2021 23:25

I think it just reflects the general mood of the public that thank goodness we're not where we were last year. Santa has his covid pass so is free to fly without restrictions.

Even if you don't agree with covid passes, using the term medical apartheid is much more offensive than showing Santa flashing his covid pass to travel.

It’s a great advert and a great message. And if anti-vax idiots boycott Tesco thereby making it safer for the rest of us, then so much the better. It will make me more likely to shop there, so job done Tesco.
