Is it really that bad - Tesco Advert

160 replies

Isthatthebestyoucando · 14/11/2021 18:20

People on Twitter are calling for a boycott of Tesco because of this ad

Apparently it's a political message of medical apartheid.

AIBU to think it's one small scene in an advert referencing last years lack of Christmas? FWIW I'm not crazy about Tesco in general and I don't think people should be coerced into medical treatments they are unhappy to take..... but seriously is this advert worth a boycott?

Of course he needs a covid passport if he's travelling around the world! I have one already too

BananaPB · 14/11/2021 19:20

Would rather see him show a Covid pass than wait for an LFT to be negative Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/11/2021 19:20

@NFLBingo

Wow, I wish I had the time to be so worked up over something so small! Covid passports are a thing, it’s just the reality for visiting many places now and in the near future, so why wouldn’t they include it? Also, who’s business is it if Santa wants to be double vaxxed? 😂
He’s pretty ancient, so I do hope he’s had his booster, too. 🎅🏻
SpookyPumpkinPants · 14/11/2021 19:22

There's not enough Alcohol to deal with the lunacy that's going on.

userisi · 14/11/2021 19:23

Santa is an old and overweight man with places to be, of course he'd have the vaccine.

wtdse · 14/11/2021 19:25

Seriously who has a problem with this?! It's funny, light hearted and festive. Wouldn't you hate to be in charge of making these adverts?. Each year people find ANYTHING to pick them apart

MzHz · 14/11/2021 19:27

@GreyhoundG1rl

Medical apartheid! Give me a break...
Medical apartheid? Is that the term they are coining?

How fucking insensitive and insulting! They have a choice… those who suffered at the hands of ACTUAL sodding apartheid didn’t.

Darwin’s law to the lot of them. I have zero patience for these idiots.

TheRealHousewife · 14/11/2021 19:29

Absolutely fine. To me it broadly means we will all be able to celebrate come hell or high water. The meaning is in the eye of the beholder. If you’re looking to find offence, you will.

Merry Christmas 🎄

CarrieBlue · 14/11/2021 19:32

@ChequerBoard

TBH if the anti-Vaxxers are going to boycott Tesco's then I am going to start shopping there!
Me too, far safer to shop there if the anti-vaxxers aren’t there
seb342 · 14/11/2021 19:32

@ArchibaldsDaddy

Good. Hopefully, we all know how to avoid the anti-vax weirdos now.

Definitely shopping at Tesco this winter…

What about the unvaccinated staff working there? Can't avoid them no matter how hard you try.
supermoonrising · 14/11/2021 19:32

@GreyhoundG1rl
I just find the trend of companies trying to capture the social/political zeitgeist for cheap laughs and big profit pretty vomit inducing. Doesn’t matter if the issue is Covid vaccine, climate change, Brexit or whatever…. I just preferred it when companies would promote and differentiate their product without sounding off about the state of the world and All the Big Issues like someone’s mate down the pub.

couchparsnip · 14/11/2021 19:34

Well done Tesco marketing. You've got people downloading your ad to see what all the outrage is about.

supermoonrising · 14/11/2021 19:34

These ads seem a particularly British phenomenon for some reason. Why do we seem to have the need for these big multinational companies to act like they are our mates?

supermoonrising · 14/11/2021 19:35

@couchparsnip
Yeah, but they’re all at it these days. A cheap tactic for cheap times, I guess.

Mulhollandmagoo · 14/11/2021 19:38

@userisi

Brilliant Grin
Shitzngiggles · 14/11/2021 19:41

I think its great. Relevant to our times, just like last year's ad. Only the fun sponges and anti vaxxers will get pissed off by it.

supermoonrising · 14/11/2021 19:43

@2pinkginsplease
Tesco’s job is done, they have got people talking about them which is the whole point of an advert.
Yes that works as a rule, but there are plenty of exceptions. When we’re taking about a huge brand (Tesco), “building brand awareness” is far less important.

And people aren’t going to suddenly switch supermarket TO Tesco because of a funny ad - That’s not why people choose their supermarket (proximity, price, quality of produce, promotions all far more important). However, if people find an ad by X shop/company offensive or off putting they may well consider taking their business elsewhere, if there is a reasonable alternative available to them.

Mulhollandmagoo · 14/11/2021 19:43

@Thethreecs

I really like it. It's cheery, funny and it's ALOT better than what has been released so far. There's some uproar about the McDonald's one too, not sure why, it's OK nothing offensive.
What's wrong with the McDonald's one Shock I thought it was quite sweet
Bagamoyo1 · 14/11/2021 19:43

@Isthatthebestyoucando

I thought it was just a little nod to the times we're living in, it's hard to make a Christmas advert current, they churn out the same looking things every year.
This was my interpretation of it too. It’s not making a statement, it’s not promoting vaccines, it’s basically reflecting the times we’re living in. And in those times, Covid passports are needed for travel, whether we like it or not.
saltontoast · 14/11/2021 19:44

I just think the covid part was unnecessary, we don't need to be reminded of the situation we've all been in for almost 2 years. That said, it won't stop me shopping there

DroopyClematis · 14/11/2021 19:45

Calling it 'medical apartheid' is a bit far fetched.

However, should a private company decide to only admit people who are vaccinated or medically exempt then so be it.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 14/11/2021 19:45

It seems to have become an annual pastime to sit down and search for offence in each of the different Christmas ads.

Personally I think they’ve all been crap this year. I will award 1 point to Aldi for using fairytale of New York though Grin

supermoonrising · 14/11/2021 19:46

@GreyhoundG1rl
Learn to disagree without swearing. It’s far more polite and civilized.

HikingforScenery · 14/11/2021 19:47

What’s the point of having the covid pass and Santa of all people requiring it? I didn’t realise he went through customs on his sleigh.

The advert is all quite meh to me

userisi · 14/11/2021 19:49

These ads seem a particularly British phenomenon for some reason. Why do we seem to have the need for these big multinational companies to act like they are our mates?

It really isn't, the Super Bowl in the US takes this whole thing to another level.
