Are you expecting a Christmas bonus?

YABU - No bonus for me!
YANBU - Of course!

If you do - how much?

I've worked many, many many many jobs and never once received a Christmas bonus, so I have no frame of reference!
I've been to a few limp Christmas dos, however, but (as an antisocial goit) I think I'd have rather had the cash!

(I'm starting a new business, which will be recruiting from 1st Jan and am wondering how much I need to budget in for Christmas bonuses, as I've seen them mentioned on here quite a bit and it seems like quite a lot of people really benefit from them.)

No Christmas bonus for me any more but I did used to get one. It’s all relative to the amount you earn, isn’t it??

Notimeforaname · 14/11/2021 18:13

I get nothing. Partner gets €200-300

DeepDown12 · 14/11/2021 18:14

I get Christmas bonus (and a half-year one). The size of the end of year bonus depends on how much growth YOY company achieved and ranges between 7-15% of salary before tax.

May I ask how much this roughly relates to his salary? Eg. a weeks wages, a days wages? Don't worry if you'd rather not say

We get our bonuses at the end of the financial year, so no.

15% of annual salary? Shock

DeepDown12 · 14/11/2021 18:16

To clarify - that's 7-15% ANNUAL gross salary.

DeepDown12 · 14/11/2021 18:17

Yes, but I'm in finance and that is a max bonus for YOY growth >20%

Pumpkinsonparade · 14/11/2021 18:18

Self employed so no bonus!! Do get gifts though off my customers!!

Rumplestrumpet · 14/11/2021 18:18

Civil servant here, never had a Christmas bonus in 15+ years. And we have to pay for our own Xmas party - not a penny from our employer (you tax payers!)

ImFree2doasiwant · 14/11/2021 18:18

I work for the local authority so , no.

gaslady14 · 14/11/2021 18:19

Lol I work for the NHS. I don't even get a payrise for working Xmas day!

ShinyMe · 14/11/2021 18:19

Lol, no! I work in education. This year though, they have said we'll finally get a 1% pay rise (it's been well over 5 years since we had one) and they'll try to apply it in time for December pay.

Twentypast · 14/11/2021 18:19

We get a discretionary 13 month salary as a bonus in December. Not paid last year and won't be this year. My company has lost nearly £2bn in the last 2 years (forecasted for 2021) because of covid so there's nothing extra being spent.

Fivetoomany · 14/11/2021 18:20

I would just ask staff if they prefer a paid for Christmas do, or the cash that would have been spent as a bonus.
If they choose the bonus then budget £50-£100 pp.
That's what I would do. I earn just above minimum wage for reference and it would be really helpful to me Smile

MissCruellaDeVil · 14/11/2021 18:20

In my previous role I would get a Christmas and end of financial year bonus. Roughly 10% of annual salary.

I'm now a teacher, no bonus for me! (though I do get 3 weeks off, so can't fault it...)

AlohaMolly · 14/11/2021 18:21

Honestly, this year? Yes. We’re a small business, two bosses, a manager and me. We got a £250 ‘gift’ at the beginning of summer and I half expect £100-200 for Christmas. Last year, I was given £100 while on a family holiday from my boss too.

For context, I earn roughly £200 a week and have worked for my boss on and off for the last twelve years. We are flexible with each other and help each other out and he is very generous with his money to equal my generosity with my time!

AlohaMolly · 14/11/2021 18:21

We will also have a paid for Christmas dinner in a local restaurant.

Mammyloveswine · 14/11/2021 18:21

I'm
A teacher.. we don't even get a drink at the Christmas do (we pay for ourselves)

Helpstopthepain · 14/11/2021 18:21

Nhs so no.

Harpydragon · 14/11/2021 18:22

3-10% dependant on achieving your goals, company growth and profit

torquewench · 14/11/2021 18:22

Never had a cash bonus at Christmas. But I used to get a turkey when I worked for a frozen food wholesaler about 30 years ago. 🦃

IDontDrinkTea · 14/11/2021 18:24

I’m NHS so no.

DH gets a % of his AL pre-tax salary. Usually somewhere between 2-10% depending on yearly profits. His current company did rather well out of the pandemic though so last year gave 20%

SoapyChoc · 14/11/2021 18:24

Last year was the first year in my current job and everyone regardless of their salary got a £200 bonus. So probably not loads to those on higher pays but quite a lot to me
