Are you expecting a Christmas bonus?

YABU - No bonus for me!
YANBU - Of course!

If you do - how much?

I've worked many, many many many jobs and never once received a Christmas bonus, so I have no frame of reference!
I've been to a few limp Christmas dos, however, but (as an antisocial goit) I think I'd have rather had the cash!

(I'm starting a new business, which will be recruiting from 1st Jan and am wondering how much I need to budget in for Christmas bonuses, as I've seen them mentioned on here quite a bit and it seems like quite a lot of people really benefit from them.)

I wish, we never get bonuses in my industry.

There is however a new insurance scheme we must sign up to (and pay for ourselves, as part of the freelance element of the job) to allow for travel to certain countries come the new year. First contribution due end of December. That’ll be the insurance people’s bonuses I guess. Merry Christmas Halloween Grin

I'm a TA
No bonus
But I do get some nice gifts from some parents 😊
We go out for a meal ...but we pay
We do get mince pies in the staff room....Independent School

FindingMeno · 15/11/2021 06:12

I'm going to be a bit controversial here and say that those of us who went out of the home to work during lockdowns are probably not so likely to be the ones getting bonuses.

NatalieH2220 · 15/11/2021 06:14

We usually get £100. Everyone gets the same regardless of salary.

Tabbypawpaw · 15/11/2021 06:18

Everybody gets £250. It’s become a bit of a tradition so even though the company had a tough year in 2020 it still went ahead. That’s for all staff whether they work in income generating or not. We also have a bonus scheme based on whether your bit generates profit over an expected amount - we get 7% of that profit ‘pot’ (ie the departments profit not the whole company’s profit).

NeverForgetYourDreams · 15/11/2021 06:22

I pay for the Xmas meal and give all staff anywhere £500-£1000 depending on the year we've had. We've had an amazing year so probably higher end this year. And we close for the whole Xmas and new year period - extra AL

TractorAndHeadphones · 15/11/2021 09:35

OP if it’s a small business it really depends on how well it does - people will understand so just use your common sense/judgement. As long as employees feel rewarded for their hard work.

It’s not like a megacorp where Christmas bonus etc budgets are slashed even though the company makes billions of dollars in profit.Or ‘donated to charity’ in the employee’s names. Like we all don’t know about tax reliefs …

scarpa · 15/11/2021 09:38

We give £250 to everyone, regardless of job role/full or part time. This year has been a good year, we might do a little bit more... that's not a lot as a % of wages obviously, but it's a nice thing for the festive period.

LampLighter414 · 15/11/2021 09:47

In all of the professional level jobs I've worked there has never been such a thing as a christmas bonus. Only annual bonus which is timed a few months after the financial year end - which has never worked out to be December. Big 4 accountancy firm I previously worked for used to give everyone in the office a gift of about ~£25 to £50 e.g. John Lewis vouchers, bottle of champagne, big box of posh chocolates but that's about it.

I get the impression its more of an SME type thing where the owners make discretionary decisions about how to make their staff feel appreciated. Whereas I've only ever worked for large corporates.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 15/11/2021 10:14

I get £50 Christmas bonus, plus Christmas party. We usually get another bonus at the end of the financial year, but amount varies depending on how company has done that year. DH is a civil servant and doesn’t get anything

hippoherostandinghere · 15/11/2021 11:00

NHS so no bonus. We still haven't received our cost of living pay rise that they've been fighting over since April Hmm

Herecomesthesun70 · 15/11/2021 11:53

Public sector no bonus.
£15 towards a Xmas do each

maddening · 15/11/2021 11:57

We do not get an Xmas bonus, we do get an annual bonus, last 2 years were £4k in current company. Previous company last bonus was £6k. My bonuses were based on strong outcomes from my annual appraisals.

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/11/2021 11:59

Civil Service. Not a penny. Pay for own Xmas Do etc. Standard, has been for all my career.

bravotango · 15/11/2021 13:03

Yes, I will get about 3% of my annual (gross) salary in with my December wages.

VapeVamp12 · 15/11/2021 13:11

We get a £500 voucher and then about £5-6k extra in our December pay. Dependent on Company performance. We're a small company of eight people

Passthewinebottle · 15/11/2021 13:18

Yes, I should get about £2.5k (9% of salary) if we hit a bunch of targets.

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 15/11/2021 13:46

DH gets his half yearly bonus in December, it’s usually around 10% of his salary, plus he gets £200-£300 of M&S vouchers.

His company have exceeded all their targets and figures this year (European tech company)

Horst · 15/11/2021 13:50

Dh does some times anywhere from £100 to over 2k.

I might order myself some nice wine and put it against the company I run.

Council might send me a Christmas card for the work I do for them more likely an email though.

altiara · 15/11/2021 14:38

My end of year bonus is paid out in March, its performance dependant and at my grade it’s 12% of my annual salary so I could get from 10-15%.
At Christmas, we usually get a hamper and a party.

Crunchymum · 15/11/2021 14:45

No but we get an annual bonus every February.

Last year, in lieu of no Christmas party, we all got a very posh hamper. I never go to the black tie do so this was a nice extra. Hoping for the same this year but not expecting (no formal Christmas do has been arranged this year either!)

qualitygirl · 15/11/2021 17:06

We have our bonus in January which is 8% of annual pay
At Christmas we have free dinner and night out. A Christmas hamper which will also include vouchers. I'm happy enough with that.

Badgerloco · 15/11/2021 20:00

Work in finance. 5% of annual salary before tax, sounds a lot but pretty porotly paid for a very stressful busy admin job that I hate. I would give up the bonus in a heartbeat for a better job with nicer people.

TractorAndHeadphones · 15/11/2021 20:03

Wow can I work there too? 😎
Dacquoise · 15/11/2021 20:07

I probably won't get one this year as I have given notice for early retirement in the New Year. It will be interesting to see how my very tight boss justifies no bonus for the work I have already done this year Grin
